In this paper, we propose a text mining method called LRD (latent relation discovery), which extends the traditional vector space model of document representation in order to improve information retrieval (IR) on documents and document clustering. Our LRD method extracts terms and entities, such as person, organization, or project names, and discovers relationships between them by taking into account their co-occurrence in textual corpora. Given a target entity, LRD discovers other entities closely related to the target effectively and efficiently. With respect to such relatedness, a measure of relation strength between entities is defined. LRD uses relation strength to enhance the vector space model, and uses the enhanced vector space model for query based IR on documents and clustering documents in order to discover complex relationships among terms and entities. Our experiments on a standard dataset for query based IR shows that our LRD method performed significantly better than traditional vector space model and other five standard statistical methods for vector expansion.

Parental reports suggest that difficulties related to child-feeding and children's eating behaviour are extremely common. While 'fussy eating' does not pose an immediate threat to health, over the long-term, consumption of a poor diet can contribute to the development of a range of otherwise preventable diseases. In addition, the stress and anxiety that can surround difficult mealtimes can have a detrimental impact upon both child and parental psychological wellbeing. Since parents have a great influence over what, when, and how much food is offered, feeding difficulties may be preventable by better parental awareness. The aim of this review is to describe how parental factors contribute to the development of common feeding problems, and to discuss the merits of existing interventions aimed at parents/primary caregivers to improve child-feeding and children's eating behaviour. The potential for different technologies to be harnessed in order to deliver interventions in new ways will also be discussed. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

Mucobromic and mucochloric acid were used as building blocks for the construction of a chemical combinatorial library of 3,4,5-trisubstituted 2(5H)-furanones. With these 2 butenolide building blocks, and eight alcohols a sublibrary of 16 dihalogenated 5-alkoxy-2(5H)-furanones was prepared. This sublibrary of 5-alkoxylated furanones was reacted with 16 amines generating a full size focussed combinatorial library of 256 individual compounds. This three dimensional combinatorial library of 3-halogen-4-amino-5-alkoxy-2(5H)-furanones was prepared around the benzimidazolyl furanone lead structure by applying a solution phase combinatorial chemistry concept. Typical representatives of the library were purified and fully characterized and one x-ray structures was recorded, additionally. The 3-bromo-4-benzimizazolyl-5-methoxy-2(5H)furanone, Br-A-l, showed an MIC of 8 μg/ml against the multiresistant Staphylococcus aureus ( MRSA). © 2006 Bentham Science Publishers Ltd.

After exogenously cueing attention to a peripheral location, the return of attention and response to the location can be inhibited. We demonstrate that these inhibitory mechanisms of attention can be associated with objects and can be automatically and implicitly retrieved over relatively long periods. Furthermore, we also show that when face stimuli are associated with inhibition, the effect is more robust for faces presented in the left visual field. This effect can be even more spatially specific, where most robust inhibition is obtained for faces presented in the upper as compared to the lower visual field. Finally, it is revealed that the inhibition is associated with an object’s identity, as inhibition moves with an object to a new location; and that the retrieved inhibition is only transiently present after retrieval.

In order to address problems of information overload in digital imagery task domains we have developed an interactive approach to the capture and reuse of image context information. Our framework models different aspects of the relationship between images and domain tasks they support by monitoring the interactive manipulation and annotation of task-relevant imagery. The approach allows us to gauge a measure of a user's intentions as they complete goal-directed image tasks. As users analyze retrieved imagery their interactions are captured and an expert task context is dynamically constructed. This human expertise, proficiency, and knowledge can then be leveraged to support other users in carrying out similar domain tasks. We have applied our techniques to two multimedia retrieval applications for two different image domains, namely the geo-spatial and medical imagery domains. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

The overall aim of our research is to develop a clinical information retrieval system that retrieves systematic reviews and underlying clinical studies from the Cochrane Library to support physician decision making. We believe that in order to accomplish this goal we need to develop a mechanism for effectively representing documents that will be retrieved by the application. Therefore, as a first step in developing the retrieval application we have developed a methodology that semi-automatically generates high quality indices and applies them as descriptors to documents from The Cochrane Library. In this paper we present a description and implementation of the automatic indexing methodology and an evaluation that demonstrates that enhanced document representation results in the retrieval of relevant documents for clinical queries. We argue that the evaluation of information retrieval applications should also include an evaluation of the quality of the representation of documents that may be retrieved. ©2010 IEEE.

Efficient and effective approaches of dealing with the vast amount of visual information available nowadays are highly sought after. This is particularly the case for image collections, both personal and commercial. Due to the magnitude of these ever expanding image repositories, annotation of all images images is infeasible, and search in such an image collection therefore becomes inherently difficult. Although content-based image retrieval techniques have shown much potential, such approaches also suffer from various problems making it difficult to adopt them in practice. In this paper, we follow a different approach, namely that of browsing image databases for image retrieval. In our Honeycomb Image Browser, large image databases are visualised on a hexagonal lattice with image thumbnails occupying hexagons. Arranged in a space filling manner, visually similar images are located close together enabling large image datasets to be navigated in a hierarchical manner. Various browsing tools are incorporated to allow for interactive exploration of the database. Experimental results confirm that our approach affords efficient image retrieval. © 2010 IEEE.

In common with most universities teaching electronic engineering in the UK, Aston University has seen a shift in the profile of its incoming students in recent years. The educational background of students has moved away from traditional Alevel maths and science and if anything this variation is set to increase with the introduction of engineering diplomas. Another major change to the circumstances of undergraduate students relates to the introduction of tuition fees in 1998 which has resulted in an increased likelihood of them working during term time. This may have resulted in students tending to concentrate on elements of the course that directly provide marks contributing to the degree classification. In the light of these factors a root and branch rethink of the electronic engineering degree programme structures at Aston was required. The factors taken into account during the course revision were:. Changes to the qualifications of incoming students. Changes to the background and experience of incoming students. Increase in overseas students, some with very limited practical experience. Student focus on work directly leading to marks. Modular compartmentalisation of knowledge. The need for provision of continuous feedback on performance We discuss these issues with specific reference to a 40 credit first year electronic engineering course and detail the new course structure and evaluate the effectiveness of the changes. The new approach appears to have been successful both educationally and with regards to student satisfaction. The first cohort of students from the new course will graduate in 2010 and results from student surveys relating particularly to project and design work will be presented at the conference. © 2009 K Sugden, D J Webb and R P Reeves.

Whole body vibration treatment is a non-pharmacological intervention intended to stimulate muscular response and increase bone mineral density, particularly for postmenopausal women. The literature related to this topic is controversial, heterogeneous, and unclear despite the prospect of a major clinical effect. The aim of this study was to identify and systematically review the literature to assess the effect of whole body vibration treatments on bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women with a specific focus on the experimental factors that influence the stimulus. Nine studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria, including 527 postmenopausal women and different vibration delivery designs. Cumulative dose, amplitudes and frequency of treatments as well as subject posture during treatment vary widely among studies. Some of the studies included an associated exercise training regime. Both randomized and controlled clinical trials were included. Whole body vibration was shown to produce significant BMD improvements on the hip and spine when compared to no intervention. Conversely, treatment associated with exercise training resulted in negligible outcomes when compared to exercise training or to placebo. Moreover, side-alternating platforms were more effective in improving BMD values than synchronous platforms and mechanical oscillations of magnitude higher than 3 g and/or frequency lower than 25 Hz were also found to be effective. Treatments with a cumulative dose over 1000 minutes in the follow-up period were correlated to positive outcomes. Our conclusion is that whole body vibration treatments in elderly women can reduce BMD decline. However, many factors (e.g. amplitude, frequency and subject posture) affect the capacity of the vibrations to propagate to the target site; the adequate level of stimulation required to produce these effects has not yet been defined. Further biomechanical analyses to predict the propagation of the vibration waves along the body and assess the stimulation levels are required.
