In the printing industry, the exploitation of triggerable materials that can have their surface properties altered on application of a post-deposition external stimulus has been crucial for the production of robust layers and patterns. To this end, herein, a series of clickable poly(R-alkyl p-styrene sulfonate) homopolymers, with systematically varied thermally-labile protecting groups, has been synthesised via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerisation. The polymer range has been designed to offer varied post-deposition thermal treatment to switch them from hydrophobic to hydrophilic. Suitable RAFT conditions have been identified to produce well-defined homopolymers (Đ, Mw/Mn < 1.11 in all cases) at high monomer conversions (>80% for all but one monomer) with controllable molar mass. Poly(p-styrene sulfonate) with an isobutyl protecting group has been shown to be the most readily thermolysed polymer that remains stable at room temperature, and was thus investigated further by incorporation into a diblock copolymer, P3HT-b-PiBSS, by click chemistry. The strategy for preparation of thermal modifiable block copolymers exploiting R-protected p-styrene sulfonates and azide-alkyne click chemistry presented herein allows the design of new, roll-to-roll processable materials for potential application in the printing industry, particularly organic electronics.

Bipolar disorder is a severe affective disorder which can present in adolescence, or sometimes earlier, and often requires a pharmacotherapeutic approach. The phenomenology of bipolar disorder in children and adolescents appears to differ from that of adult patients, prompting the need for specific pharmacotherapy guidelines for long-term management in this patient population. Current treatment guidelines were mainly developed based on evidence from studies in adult patients, highlighting the requirement for further research into the pharmacotherapy of children and adolescents with bipolar disorder. This review compares and critically analyzes the available guidelines, discussing the recommended medication classes, their mechanisms of action, side effect profiles and evidence base

There is a growing awareness that inflammatory diseases have an oxidative pathology, which can result in specific oxidation of amino acids within proteins. It is known that patients with inflammatory disease have higher levels of plasma protein nitro-tyrosine than healthy controls. Fibrinogen is an abundant plasma protein, highly susceptible to such oxidative modifications, and is therefore a potential marker for oxidative protein damage. The aim of this study was to map tyrosine nitration in fibrinogen under oxidative conditions and identify susceptible residues. Fibrinogen was oxidised with 0.25mM and 1mM SIN-1, a peroxynitrite generator, and methionine was used to quench excess oxidant in the samples. The carbonyl assay was used to confirm oxidation in the samples. The carbonyl levels were 2.3, 8.72 and 11.5nmol/mg protein in 0, 0.25mM and 1mM SIN-1 samples respectively. The samples were run on a SDS-PAGE gel and tryptically digested before analysis by HPLC MS-MS. All 3 chains of fibrinogen were observed for all treatment conditions. The overall sequence coverage for fibrinogen determined by Mascot was between 60-75%. The oxidised samples showed increases in oxidative modifications in both alpha and beta chains, commonly methionine sulfoxide and tyrosine nitration, correlating with increasing SIN-1 treatment. Tyrosines that were most susceptible were Tyr135 (tryptic peptide YLQEIYNSNNQK) and Tyr277 (tryptic peptide GGSTSYGTGSETESPR), but several other nitrated tyrosines were also identified with high confidence. Identification of these susceptible peptides will allow design of sequences-specific biomarkers of oxidative and nitrative damage to plasma protein in inflammatory conditions.

The IUPHAR database (IUPHAR-DB) integrates peer-reviewed pharmacological, chemical, genetic, functional and anatomical information on the 354 nonsensory G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), 71 ligand-gated ion channel subunits and 141 voltage-gated-like ion channel subunits encoded by the human, rat and mouse genomes. These genes represent the targets of approximately one-third of currently approved drugs and are a major focus of drug discovery and development programs in the pharmaceutical industry. IUPHAR-DB provides a comprehensive description of the genes and their functions, with information on protein structure and interactions, ligands, expression patterns, signaling mechanisms, functional assays and biologically important receptor variants (e.g. single nucleotide polymorphisms and splice variants). In addition, the phenotypes resulting from altered gene expression (e.g. in genetically altered animals or in human genetic disorders) are described. The content of the database is peer reviewed by members of the International Union of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology Committee on Receptor Nomenclature and Drug Classification (NC-IUPHAR); the data are provided through manual curation of the primary literature by a network of over 60 subcommittees of NC-IUPHAR. Links to other bioinformatics resources, such as NCBI, Uniprot, HGNC and the rat and mouse genome databases are provided. The global population of people aged 60 years and older is growing rapidly [1]. Ongoing advances in mobile technologies have the potential to improve independence and quality of life of older adults by supporting the delivery of personalised and ubiquitous healthcare solutions. Suggested healthcare reforms reflect the need for a future model of healthcare delivery wherein older adults take more responsibility for their own healthcare in their own homes in an attempt to moderate healthcare costs without impairing healthcare quality. For such a paradigm shift to be realised, the supporting technology must address the needs of older patients efficiently and effectively to ensure technology acceptance and use. We argue this is not possible without employing participatory approaches for the informed and effective design and development of such technologies and outline recommendations for engaging in participatory design with older adults with impairments based on practical experience.

The objective of this thesis is to develop a better understanding of the relationship fading phenomenon in business-to-consumer context. Fading relates to a gradual decline in consumer’s willingness to continue a relationship with a company. Therefore, understanding the fading process may help to elucidate the ‘unexplained’ relationship dissolution and customer defection. Led by an assumption that a relationship between a consumer and a brand is like the one between individuals, the thesis proposes that the trajectory of relationship fading reflects the disaffection processes similar to the ones suggested in marital and romantic relationships between individuals. The approach taken to answering this research question is a multi-study approach. This type of approach allows addressing each individual research question independently, using the most appropriate research methods. As a result, the thesis comprises three adjacent studies. All three studies are linked and together contribute to a better understanding of the relationship fading process, which is the main topic of the thesis. Based on the results from the first study, a set of boundary conditions of relationship fading is identified. The results of the second study suggest that predictors of relationship fading stage can be uncovered. Thirdly, different restoration techniques are explored, aiming to describe their effectiveness in various relationship fading stages. Individual objectives of the three studies are accomplished. All three studies contribute to achieving the overall objective of the thesis, namely to developing a better understanding of the phenomenon of relationship fading.
