In this Letter, we report the fabrication of a highly photosensitive, microstructured polymer optical fiber using benzyl dimethyl ketal as a dopant, as well as the inscription of a fiber Bragg grating in the fiber. A refractive index change in the core of at least 3.2 × 10 has been achieved, providing a grating with a strong transmission rejection of -23 dB with an inscription time of only 13 min. The fabrication method has a big advantage compared to doping step index fiber since it enables doping of the fiber without using extra dopants to compensate for the index reduction in the core introduced by the photosensitive agent. © 2013 Optical Society of America.

We propose a novel approach to ultra-narrow optical filtering based on a specially designed slightly asymmetric filter, which can be fabricated using fibre Bragg gratings. A feasibility of 8×40 Gbit/s DWDM RZ transmission with 0.8 bit/s/Hz spectral efficiency (without polarisation multiplexing) over 1280 km of SMF/DCF link without FEC has been confirmed by numerical modelling. © 2004 Elsevier Inc. Narrow-band emission of spectral width down to ∼0.05 nm linewidth is achieved in the random distributed feedback fiber laser employing narrow-band fiber Bragg grating or fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer filters. The observed line-width is ∼10 times less than line-width of other demonstrated up to date random distributed feedback fiber lasers. The random DFB laser with Fabry-Perot interferometer filter provides simultaneously multi-wavelength and narrow-band (within each line) generation with possibility of further wavelength tuning. © 2013 Optical Society of America.

Fabrication of gratings has gone a long way since the onset by Kenneth Hill in 1976. Basic fabrication techniques such as holographic and phase-mask which have distinguishing advantages (variable wavelength, and high repeatability consecutively) have since been modified in an effort to combine the advantages of both methods. These basic methods are inherently simple and have few controls, they have been combined and modified over time to enable the possibility of fabricating gratings with complex modulation index and phase profiles.

The authors fabricated a demountable Ferrule connector/Physical contact connection between silica fiber and a polymer optical fiber (POF) containing a fiber Bragg grating. The use of a connector for POF grating sensors eliminates the limitations of ultraviolet glued connections and increases the ease with which the devices can be applied to real-world measurement tasks. © 2012 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE).

A theoretical and experimental investigation of the time delay characteristics of fiber Bragg grating-based Sagnac loops (FBGSLs) is presented. Analytic expressions for the phase and time delay of the FBGSL have been derived and excellent agreement is found between their predictions and experimental results for configurations incorporating uniform-period and chirped-period gratings. For symmetrical grating structures, it is found that the FBGSL time delay response is similar to that of the incorporated grating; with asymmetrical gratings, the FBGSL response is quite different. It is shown that wavelength-division-multiplexing filters exhibiting near-zero dispersion characteristics can be implemented using FBGSLs.

A simple efficient method for stabilizing a harmonically mode-locked fiber ring laser is proposed. In this method, a linear optical filter and a nonlinear Fabry–Pérot filter in which the refractive index is optical intensity dependent are located in the laser cavity. The linear filter is used to select a fixed lasing wavelength, and the Fabry–Pérot filter introduces a negative all-optical feedback mechanism that is able to suppress pulse-to-pulse amplitude fluctuations in the laser cavity. The scheme was experimentally demonstrated using a fiber Bragg grating as the linear filter and a laser diode biased below threshold as the nonlinear Fabry–Pérot, and stable harmonically mode-locked pulses with a supermode noise suppression ratio >55 dB were obtained.

We propose a simple Er-doped fiber laser configuration for achieving stable dual-wavelength oscillation at room temperature, in which a high birefringence fiber Bragg grating was used as the wavelength-selective component. Stable dual-wavelength oscillation at room temperature with a wavelength spacing of 0.23 nm and mutually orthogonal polarization stages was achieved by utilizing the polarization hole-burning effect. An amplitude variation of less than 0.7 dB over an 80 s period was obtained for both wavelengths.
