Spectrum narrowing of CW light was observed experimentally in optical transmission fibers with normal dispersion. The effect's theoretical interpretation as an effective self-pumping parametric amplification of the spectrum's central part is confirmed by numerical modeling. We demonstrate erbium- and thulium-doped fibre ring lasers mode-locked with a single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) operating at normal intracavity dispersion and high nonlinearity. The lasers generate transform-limited picosecond inversed-modified soliton pulses. © 2014 OSA.

We report on a new vector model of an erbium doped fiber laser mode locked with carbon nanotubes. This model goes beyond the limitations of the previously used models based on either coupled nonlinear Schrödinger or Ginzburg-Landau equations. It results in a new family of vector solitons with fast evolving states of polarization experimentally observed in our previous papers.

Many of the current optical transmission techniques were developed for linear communication channels and are constrained by the fibre nonlinearity. This paper discusses the potential for radically different approaches to signal transmission and processing based on using inherently nonlinear techniques.

We present a semi-analytical method for dimensioning Reed-Solomon codes for coherent DQPSK systems with laser phase noise and cycle slips. We evaluate the accuracy of our method for a 28 Gbaud system using numerical simulations.

A diode-cladding-pumped mid-infrared passively Q-switched Ho 3+-doped fluoride fiber laser using a reverse designed broad band semiconductor saturable mirror (SESAM) was demonstrated. Nonlinear reflectivity of the SESAM was measured using an in-house Yb3+-doped mode-locked fiber laser at 1062 nm. Stable pulse train was produced at a slope efficient of 12.1% with respect to the launched pump power. Maximum pulse energy of 6.65 μJ with a pulse width of 1.68 μs and signal to noise ratio (SNR) of ~50 dB was achieved at a repetition rate of 47.6 kHz and center wavelength of 2.971 μm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first 3 μm region SESAM based Q-switched fiber laser with the highest average power and pulse energy, as well as the longest wavelength from mid-infrared passively Q-switched fluoride fiber lasers. © 2014 SPIE.

We report experimental study of vector solitons for the fundamental and harmonic mode-locked operation in erbiumdoper fiber lasers with carbon nanotubes based saturable absorbers and anomalous dispersion cavities. We measure evolution of the output pulses polarization and demonstrate vector solitons with various polarization attractors, including locked polarization, periodic polarization switching, and polarization precession.

We study polarization dynamics of a harmonic mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser with carbon nanotubes absorber. New types of vector solitons are shown for multi-pulse and harmonic mode-locked operation with locked, switching and precessing polarization states. © 2014 OSA.

We studied experimentally polarization dynamics in a carbon nanotube mode locked stretched pulse fiber laser. For the first time, polarization locked, regular and irregular polarization switching have been observed at the microsecond time scale. © 2014 OSA.
