A modern electronic nonlinearity equalizer (NLE) based on inverse Volterra series transfer function (IVSTF) with reduced complexity is applied on coherent optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) signals for next-generation long- and ultra-long-haul applications. The OFDM inter-subcarrier crosstalk effects are explored thoroughly using the IVSTF-NLE and compared with the case of linear equalization (LE) for transmission distances of up to 7000 km. © 2013 IEEE.

Due to their unique dispersion and nonlinear properties, chalcogenide suspended-core fibers, characterized by a few micrometer-sized core suspended between large air-holes by few small glaß struts, are excellent candidates for mid-infrared applications. In the present study the influence of the main croß-section characteristics of the chalcogenide suspended-core fibers on the dispersion curve and on the position of the zero-dispersion wavelength has been thoroughly analyzed with a full-vector modal solver based on the finite element. In particular, the design of suspended-core fibers made of both As2S3 and As2Se3 has been optimized to obtain dispersion properties suitable for the supercontinuum generation in the mid-infrared.

We propose and numerically demonstrate a novel simple method to produce optical Nyquist pulses based on pulse shaping in a passively mode-locked fiber laser with an in-cavity flat-top spectral filter. The proposed scheme takes advantage of the nonlinear in-cavity dynamics of the laser and offers the possibility to generate high-quality sinc-shaped pulses with widely tunable bandwidth directly from the laser oscillator. We also show that the use of a filter with a corrective convex profile relaxes the need for large nonlinear phase accumulation in the cavity by offsetting the concavity of the nonlinearly broadened pulse spectrum.

Recent developments in nonlinear optics have brought to the fore of intensive research an interesting class of pulses with a parabolic intensity profile and a linear instantaneous frequency shift or chirp. Parabolic pulses propagate in optical fibres with normal group-velocity dispersion in a self-similar manner, holding certain relations (scaling) between pulse power, duration and chirp parameter, and can tolerate strong nonlinearity without distortion or wave breaking. These solutions, which have been dubbed similaritons, were demonstrated theoretically and experimentally in fibre amplifiers in 2000. Similaritons in fibre amplifiers are, along with solitons in passive fibres, the most well-known classes of nonlinear attractors for pulse propagation in optical fibre, so they take on major fundamental importance. The unique properties of parabolic similaritons have stimulated numerous applications in nonlinear optics, ranging from ultrashort high-power pulse generation to highly coherent continuum sources and to optical nonlinear processing of telecommunication signals. In this work, we review the physics underlying the generation of parabolic similaritons as well as recent results obtained in a wide range of experimental configurations.

Statistical mechanics of two coupled vector fields is studied in the tight-binding model that describes propagation of polarized light in discrete waveguides in the presence of the four-wave mixing. The energy and power conservation laws enable the formulation of the equilibrium properties of the polarization state in terms of the Gibbs measure with positive temperature. The transition line T=∞ is established beyond which the discrete vector solitons are created. Also in the limit of the large nonlinearity an analytical expression for the distribution of Stokes parameters is obtained, which is found to be dependent only on the statistical properties of the initial polarization state and not on the strength of nonlinearity. The evolution of the system to the final equilibrium state is shown to pass through the intermediate stage when the energy exchange between the waveguides is still negligible. The distribution of the Stokes parameters in this regime has a complex multimodal structure strongly dependent on the nonlinear coupling coefficients and the initial conditions.

We present the analytical description of a specific nonlinear fibre channel with non-compensated dispersion. Information theory analysis shows that capacity of such nonlinear fibre channel does not decay with growing signal-to-noise ratio. © 2012 IEEE.

Owing to the limited cell size of eNodeB (eNB), the relay node has emerged as an attractive solution for the long-term evolution (LTE) system. The nonlinear limit of the alternative method to multipleinput and multiple-output (MIMO) based on frequency division multiplexing (FDM) for orthogonal FDM (OFDM) is analysed over varying transmission spans. In this reported work, it is shown that the degradation pattern over the linear, intermixing and nonlinear propagation regions is consistent for the 2 and the 2.6 GHz bands. The proposed bands experienced a linear increase in the error vector magnitude (EVM) for both the linear and the nonlinear regions proportional to the increasing transmission spans. In addition, an optical launch power between -2 and 2 dBm achieved a significantly lower EVM than the LTE limit of 8% for the 10-60 km spans. © The Institution of Engineering and Technology 2014.

The integrability of the nonlinear Schräodinger equation (NLSE) by the inverse scattering transform shown in a seminal work [1] gave an interesting opportunity to treat the corresponding nonlinear channel similar to a linear one by using the nonlinear Fourier transform. Integrability of the NLSE is in the background of the old idea of eigenvalue communications [2] that was resurrected in recent works [3{7]. In [6, 7] the new method for the coherent optical transmission employing the continuous nonlinear spectral data | nonlinear inverse synthesis was introduced. It assumes the modulation and detection of data using directly the continuous part of nonlinear spectrum associated with an integrable transmission channel (the NLSE in the case considered). Although such a transmission method is inherently free from nonlinear impairments, the noisy signal corruptions, arising due to the ampli¯er spontaneous emission, inevitably degrade the optical system performance. We study properties of the noise-corrupted channel model in the nonlinear spectral domain attributed to NLSE. We derive the general stochastic equations governing the signal evolution inside the nonlinear spectral domain and elucidate the properties of the emerging nonlinear spectral noise using well-established methods of perturbation theory based on inverse scattering transform [8]. It is shown that in the presence of small noise the communication channel in the nonlinear domain is the additive Gaussian channel with memory and signal-dependent correlation matrix. We demonstrate that the effective spectral noise acquires colouring", its autocorrelation function becomes slow decaying and non-diagonal as a function of \frequencies", and the noise loses its circular symmetry, becoming elliptically polarized. Then we derive a low bound for the spectral effiency for such a channel. Our main result is that by using the nonlinear spectral techniques one can significantly increase the achievable spectral effiency compared to the currently available methods [9]. REFERENCES 1. We experimentally demonstrate ∼2 dB quality (Q)-factor enhancement in terms of fiber nonlinearity compensation of 40 Gb/s 16 quadrature amplitude modulation coherent optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing at 2000 km, using a nonlinear equalizer (NLE) based on artificial neural networks (ANN). Nonlinearity alleviation depends on escalation of the ANN training overhead and the signal bit rate, reporting ∼4 dB Q-factor enhancement at 70 Gb/s, whereas a reduction of the number of ANN neurons annihilates the NLE performance. An enhanced performance by up to ∼2 dB in Q-factor compared to the inverse Volterra-series transfer function NLE leads to a breakthrough in the efficiency of ANN.

In this talk we investigate the usage of spectrally shaped amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) in order to emulate highly dispersed wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) signals in an optical transmission system. Such a technique offers various simplifications to large scale WDM experiments. Not only does it offer a reduction in transmitter complexity, removing the need for multiple source lasers, it potentially reduces the test and measurement complexity by requiring only the centre channel of a WDM system to be measured in order to estimate WDM worst case performance. The use of ASE as a test and measurement tool is well established in optical communication systems and several measurement techniques will be discussed [1, 2]. One of the most prevalent uses of ASE is in the measurement of receiver sensitivity where ASE is introduced in order to degrade the optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR) and measure the resulting bit error rate (BER) at the receiver. From an analytical point of view noise has been used to emulate system performance, the Gaussian Noise model is used as an estimate of highly dispersed signals and has had consider- able interest [3]. The work to be presented here extends the use of ASE by using it as a metric to emulate highly dispersed WDM signals and in the process reduce WDM transmitter complexity and receiver measurement time in a lab environment. Results thus far have indicated [2] that such a transmitter configuration is consistent with an AWGN model for transmission, with modulation format complexity and nonlinearities playing a key role in estimating the performance of systems utilising the ASE channel emulation technique. We conclude this work by investigating techniques capable of characterising the nonlinear and damage limits of optical fibres and the resultant information capacity limits. REFERENCES McCarthy, M. In this talk we will review some of the key enabling technologies of optical communications and potential future bottlenecks. Single mode fibre (SMF) has long been the preferred waveguide for long distance communication. This is largely due to low loss, low cost and relative linearity over a wide bandwidth. As capacity demands have grown SMF has largely been able to keep pace with demand. Several groups have been identifying the possibility of exhausting the bandwidth provided by SMF [1,2,3]. This so called “capacity-crunch” has potentially vast economic and social consequences and will be discussed in detail. As demand grows optical power launched into the fibre has the potential to cause nonlinearities that can be detrimental to transmission. There has been considerable work done on identifying this nonlinear limit [4, 5] with a strong re- search interest currently on the topic of nonlinear compensation [6, 7]. Embracing and compensating for nonlinear transmission is one potential solution that may extend the lifetime of the current waveguide technology. However, at sufficiently high powers the waveguide will fail due to heat-induced mechanical failure. Moving forward it be- comes necessary to address the waveguide itself with several promising contenders discussed, including few-mode fibre and multi-core fibre.

Large broadening of short optical pulses due to fiber dispersion leads to a strong overlap in information data streams resulting in statistical deviations of the local power from its average. We present a theoretical analysis of rare events of high-intensity fluctuations-optical freak waves-that occur in fiber communication links using bit-overlapping transmission. Although the nature of the large fluctuations examined here is completely linear, as compared to commonly studied freak waves generated by nonlinear effects, the considered deviations inherit from rogue waves the key features of practical interest-random appearance of localized high-intensity pulses. We use the term "rogue wave" in an unusual context mostly to attract attention to both the possibility of purely linear statistical generation of huge amplitude waves and to the fact that in optics the occurrence of such pulses might be observable even with the standard Gaussian or even rarer-than-Gaussian statistics, without imposing the condition of an increased probability of extreme value events. © 2011 American Physical Society.

We develop a theoretical framework for modeling of continuous wave Yb-doped fiber lasers with highly nonlinear cavity dynamics. The developed approach has shown good agreement between theoretical predictions and experimental results for particular scheme of Yb-doped laser with large spectral broadening during single round trip. The model is capable to accurately describe main features of the experimentally measured laser outputs such as power efficiency slope, power leakage through fibre Bragg gratings, spectral broadening and spectral shape of generated radiation. © 2011 Optical Society of America.

In this Letter, we theoretically and numerically analyze the performance of coherent optical transmission systems that deploy inline or transceiver based nonlinearity compensation techniques. For systems where signal-signal nonlinear interactions are fully compensated, we find that beyond the performance peak the signal-to-noise ratio degradation has a slope of 3 dBSNR/dBPower suggesting a quartic rather than quadratic dependence on signal power. This is directly related to the fact that signals in a given span will interact not only with linear amplified spontaneous emission noise, but also with the nonlinear four-wave mixing products generated from signal-noise interaction in previous (hitherto) uncompensated spans. The performance of optical systems employing different nonlinearity compensation schemes were numerically simulated and compared against analytical predictions, showing a good agreement within a 0.4 dB margin of error.

Nonlinear distortion in few-mode fibers for intermediate coupling is studied for the first time. Coupling strengths beyond -20 dB/100m give suppression of nonlinear distortion below the isolated mode without mode coupling.
