In the present study we investigated the role of spatial locative comprehension in learning and retrieving pathways when landmarks were available and when they were absent in a sample of typically developing 6- to 11-year-old children. Our results show that the more proficient children are in understanding spatial locatives the more they are able to learn pathways, retrieve them after a delay and represent them on a map when landmarks are present in the environment. These findings suggest that spatial language is crucial when individuals rely on sequences of landmarks to drive their navigation towards a given goal but that it is not involved when navigational representations based on the geometrical shape of the environment or the coding of body movements are sufficient for memorizing and recalling short pathways.

What is the maximum rate at which information can be transmitted error-free in fibre-optic communication systems? For linear channels, this was established in classic works of Nyquist and Shannon. However, despite the immense practical importance of fibre-optic communications providing for >99% of global data traffic, the channel capacity of optical links remains unknown due to the complexity introduced by fibre nonlinearity. Recently, there has been a flurry of studies examining an expected cap that nonlinearity puts on the information-carrying capacity of fibre-optic systems. Mastering the nonlinear channels requires paradigm shift from current modulation, coding and transmission techniques originally developed for linear communication systems. Here we demonstrate that using the integrability of the master model and the nonlinear Fourier transform, the lower bound on the capacity per symbol can be estimated as 10.7 bits per symbol with 500 GHz bandwidth over 2,000 km.

The application of pharmacokinetic modelling within the drug development field essentially allows one to develop a quantitative description of the temporal behaviour of a compound of interest at a tissue/organ level, by identifying and defining relationships between a dose of a drug and dependent variables. In order to understand and characterise the pharmacokinetics of a drug, it is often helpful to employ pharmacokinetic modelling using empirical or mechanistic approaches. Pharmacokinetic models can be developed within mathematical and statistical commercial software such as MATLAB using traditional mathematical and computation coding, or by using the Simbiology Toolbox available within MATLAB for a graphical user interface approach to developing pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models. For formulations dosed orally, a prerequisite for clinical activity is the entry of the drug into the systemic circulation.
