Optimisation of random DFB Raman laser amplifier

We numerically optimise 2nd-order random DFB Raman laser amplifiers for transmission for the first time. Optical signal to noise ratio, nonlinear phase shift, signal power variation and the impact of the reflectivity of FBG are investigated in the links from 10 - 120 km.

Advanced 3R regenerator scheme for high spectral efficient signal waveforms

We propose a novel 3R regenerator architecture for highly spectral efficient signals. Through numerical simulations we evaluate its performance and compare with traditional 2R schemes. The results of the analysis demonstrate necessity of 3R for regeneration of NRZ pulses and its relevance for future high capacity transmission systems.

All-optical add-drop multiplexer for OFDM signals

We summarize our research work on the design and development of an add-drop multiplexer for spectrally overlapping OFDM signals. The standard node functions of sub-channel drop, extraction and insertion were obtained whilst the signals remained fully in the optical domain. Numerical simulations have been carried out to identify the main sources of degradation and to benchmark the architectural performance against critical design parameters, whereas the experimental demonstration of the scheme has been achieved for both single quadrature and dual quadrature signals. The reported scheme enables a fully flexible node compatible with future terabit per second super-channel transmission.

Systemic inflammatory impact of periodontitis on acute coronary syndrome

Aim: A causative relationship between acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and periodontitis has yet to be defined. The aim of this study was to assess differences in levels of serum cytokines between individuals with or without ACS or periodontal comorbidity. Material and Methods: In a case–control study, individuals with ACS (78 individuals, 10.3% females) and matching healthy controls (78 individuals, 28.2% females) were included. Medical and dental examinations were performed to diagnose ACS and periodontitis. Serum levels of cytokines were assessed, using Luminex technology. Results: A diagnosis of periodontitis in the ACS and control group was diagnosed in 52.6% and 12.8% of the individuals, respectively. The unadjusted odds-ratio that individuals with ACS also had periodontitis was 7.5 (95% CI: 3.4, 16.8, p
