By conducting point-by-point inscription in a continuously moving slab of pure fused silica at the optimal depth (170νm depth below the surface), we have fabricated a 250nm period nanostructure with 30nJ, 300fs, 1kHz pulses from a frequency-tripled Ti:sapphire laser. This is the smallest value for the inscribed period yet reported, and has been achieved with radical improvement in the quality of the inscribed nanostructures in comparison with previous reports.

We investigated the energy deposition process leading to the waveguide inscription in transparent dielectrics both experimentally and theoretically. Parameters of multiphoton absorption process and inscription thresholds were measured in a range of materials including YAG, ZnSe, RbPb2Cl5 crystals, and in fused silica and BK7 glasses.

We propose a new all-optical, all-fibre scheme for conversion of time-division multiplexed to wavelength-division multiplexed signals using cross-phase modulation with triangular pulses. Partial signal regeneration using this technique is also demonstrated.

We perform numerical simulations on a model describing a Brillouin-based temperature and strain sensor, testing its response when it is probed with relatively short pulses. Experimental results were recently published [e.g., Opt. Lett. 24, 510 (1999)] that showed a broadening of the Brillouin loss curve when the probe pulse duration is reduced, followed by a sudden and rather surprising reduction of the linewidth when the pulse duration gets shorter than the acoustic relaxation time. Our study reveals the processes responsible for this behavior. We give a clear physical insight into the problem, allowing us to define the best experimental conditions required for one to take the advantage of this effect.

We introduce the concept of noncoherent optical pulse discrimination from a coherent (or partially coherent) signal of the same energy using the phenomenon of soliton generation. The impact of randomization of the optical signal content on the observable characteristics of soliton generation is examined and quantified for the particular example of a rectangular pulse.

We develop a perturbation analysis that describes the effect of third-order dispersion on the similariton pulse solution of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation in a fibre gain medium. The theoretical model predicts with sufficient accuracy the pulse structural changes induced, which are observed through direct numerical simulations.

In this scheme, nonlinearity and dispersion in the NDF lead to various reshaping processes of an initial, conventional pulse according to the chirping value and power level at the input of the fibre. In particular, we have observed that triangular-shaped pulses can be generated for sufficiently high energies and a positive initial chirp parameter. In our experiments, 2.8 ps-FWHM, transform-limited pulses generated from a mode-locked fibre laser source at a repetition rate of 1.25 GHz were pre-chirped by propagating the pulses through different lengths of standard mono-mode fibre. The chirped pulses were then amplified to different power levels before being launched into a 2.3 km section of True Wave fibre (TWF). The corresponding numerically calculated pulse temporal intensity profile and numerical and experimental second-harmonic generation frequency-resolved optical gating (SHG FROG) spectrograms were also derived. In conclusion, we have presented numerical modelling results which show the system design parameters required for the generation of triangular-shaped pulses in a nonlinear NDF, and experimentally demonstrated triangular pulse shaping in conventional NDF.

We report two recent studies dealing with the evolution of parabolic pulses in normally dispersive fibres. On the one hand, the nonlinear reshaping from a Gaussian intensity profile towards the asymptotic parabolic shape is experimentally investigated in a Raman amplifier. On the other hand, the significant impact of the fourth order dispersion on a passive propagation is theoretically discussed: we numerically demonstrate flat-top, coherent supercontinuum generation in an all-normal dispersion-flattened photonic crystal fiber. This shape is associated to a strong reshaping of the temporal profile what becomes triangular.

In this second talk on dissipative structures in fiber applications, we overview theoretical aspects of the generation, evolution and characterization of self-similar parabolic-shaped pulses in fiber amplifier media. In particular, we present a perturbation analysis that describes the structural changes induced by third-order fiber dispersion on the parabolic pulse solution of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with gain. Promising applications of parabolic pulses in optical signal post-processing and regeneration in communication systems are also discussed.

Recent developments in nonlinear optics reveal an interesting class of pulses with a parabolic intensity profile in the energy-containing core and a linear frequency chirp that can propagate in a fiber with normal group-velocity dispersion. Parabolic pulses propagate in a stable selfsimilar manner, holding certain relations (scaling) between pulse power, width, and chirp parameter. In the additional presence of linear amplification, they enjoy the remarkable property of representing a common asymptotic state (or attractor) for arbitrary initial conditions. Analytically, self-similar (SS) parabolic pulses can be found as asymptotic, approximate solutions of the nonlinear Schr¨odinger equation (NLSE) with gain in the semi-classical (largeamplitude/small-dispersion) limit. By analogy with the well-known stable dynamics of solitary waves - solitons, these SS parabolic pulses have come to be known as similaritons. In practical fiber systems, inherent third-order dispersion (TOD) in the fiber always introduces a certain degree of asymmetry in the structure of the propagating pulse, eventually leading to pulse break-up. To date, there is no analytic theory of parabolic pulses under the action of TOD. Here, we develop aWKB perturbation analysis that describes the effect of weak TOD on the parabolic pulse solution of the NLSE in a fiber gain medium. The induced perturbation in phase and amplitude can be found to any order. The theoretical model predicts with sufficient accuracy the pulse structural changes induced by TOD, which are observed through direct numerical NLSE simulations.

A novel kind of Airy-based pulse with an invariant propagation in lossy dispersive media is proposed. The basic principle is based on an optical energy trade-off between different parts of the pulse caused by the chromatic dispersion, which is used to compensate the attenuation losses of the propagation medium. Although the ideal concept of the proposed pulses implies infinite pulse energy, the numerical simulations show that practical finite energy pulses can be designed to obtain a partially invariant propagation over a finite distance of propagation.

By spectral analysis, and using joint time-frequency representations, we present the theoretical basis to design invariant band-limited Airy pulses with an arbitrary degree of robustness, and an arbitrary range of single mode fiber chromatic dispersion. The numerically simulated examples confirm the theoretically predicted pulse partial invariance in the propagation of the pulse in the fiber.
