Fibre Bragg Grating (FBG) array sensors have been successfully embedded in aluminium alloy matrix by ultrasonic consolidation (UC) technique. The temperature and loading responses of the embedded FBG arrays have been systematically characterised. The embedded grating sensors exhibit an average temperature sensitivity of ~36pm/°C, which is three times higher than that of normal FBGs, and a loading responsivity of ~0.1nm/kg within the dynamic range from 0kg to 3kg. This initial experiment clearly demonstrates that FBG array sensors can be embedded in metal matrix together with other passive and active fibres to fabricate smart materials to monitor the operation and health of engineering structures.

Objectives: To develop a tool for the accurate reporting and aggregation of findings from each of the multiple methods used in a complex evaluation in an unbiased way. Study Design and Setting: We developed a Method for Aggregating The Reporting of Interventions in Complex Studies (MATRICS) within a gastroenterology study [Evaluating New Innovations in (the delivery and organisation of) Gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy services by the NHS Modernisation Agency (ENIGMA)]. We subsequently tested it on a different gastroenterology trial [Multi-Institutional Nurse Endoscopy Trial (MINuET)]. We created three layers to define the effects, methods, and findings from ENIGMA. We assigned numbers to each effect in layer 1 and letters to each method in layer 2. We used an alphanumeric code based on layers 1 and 2 to every finding in layer 3 to link the aims, methods, and findings. We illustrated analogous findings by assigning more than one alphanumeric code to a finding. We also showed that more than one effect or method could report the same finding. We presented contradictory findings by listing them in adjacent rows of the MATRICS. Results: MATRICS was useful for the effective synthesis and presentation of findings of the multiple methods from ENIGMA. We subsequently successfully tested it by applying it to the MINuET trial. Conclusion: MATRICS is effective for synthesizing the findings of complex, multiple-method studies.

The spectroscopic pump-probe reflectance method was used to investigate recombination dynamics in samples of nanocrystalline silicon embedded in a matrix of hydrogenated amorphous silicon. We found that the dynamics can be described by a rate equation including linear and quadratic terms corresponding to recombination processes associated with impurities and impurity-assisted Auger ionization, respectively. We determined the values of the recombination coefficients using the initial concentrations method. We report the coefficients of 1.5 × 1011 s-1 and 1.1 × 10-10 cm3 s-1 for the impurity-assisted recombination and Auger ionization, respectively.

The gasotransmitter hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is known as an important regulator in several physiological and pathological responses. Among the challenges facing the field is the accurate and reliable measurement of hydrogen sulfide bioavailability. We have reported an approach to discretely measure sulfide and sulfide pools using the monobromobimane (MBB) method coupled with reversed phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC). The method involves the derivatization of sulfide with excess MBB under precise reaction conditions at room temperature to form sulfide dibimane (SDB). The resultant fluorescent SDB is analyzed by RP-HPLC using fluorescence detection with the limit of detection for SDB (2 nM). Care must be taken to avoid conditions that may confound H2S measurement with this method. Overall, RP-HPLC with fluorescence detection of SDB is a useful and powerful tool to measure biological sulfide levels.
