We propose the use of stochastic frontier approach to modelling financial constraints of firms. The main advantage of the stochastic frontier approach over the stylised approaches that use pooled OLS or fixed effects panel regression models is that we can not only decide whether or not the average firm is financially constrained, but also estimate a measure of the degree of the constraint for each firm and for each time period, and also the marginal impact of firm characteristics on this measure. We then apply the stochastic frontier approach to a panel of Indian manufacturing firms, for the 1997–2006 period. In our application, we highlight and discuss the aforementioned advantages, while also demonstrating that the stochastic frontier approach generates regression estimates that are consistent with the stylised intuition found in the literature on financial constraint and the wider literature on the Indian credit/capital market.

This article analyses the growth rates of the complete population of UK-registered firms for the period 2001 to 2005. We estimate Gibrat's law – that growth rates are independent of firm size – by deciles of the firm size distribution. Whether we are able to reject Gibrat's law varies across deciles. We also show how estimates vary according to the measure of firm size, time period and sample selection.

In this paper, we present experimental results for monitoring long distance WDM communication links using a line monitoring system suitable for legacy optically amplified long-haul undersea systems. This monitoring system is based on setting up a simple, passive, low cost high-loss optical loopback circuit at each repeater that provides a connection between the existing anti-directional undersea fibres, and can be used to define fault location. Fault location is achieved by transmitting a short pulse supervisory signal along with the WDM data signals where a portion of the overall signal is attenuated and returned to the transmit terminal by the loopback circuit. A special receiver is used at the terminal to extract the weakly returned supervisory signal where each supervisory signal is received at different times corresponding to different optical repeaters. Therefore, the degradation in any repeater appears on its corresponding supervisory signal level. We use a recirculating loop to simulate a 4600 km fibre link, on which a high-loss loopback supervisory system is implemented. Successful monitoring is accomplished through the production of an appropriate supervisory signal at the terminal that is detected and identified in a satisfactory time period after passing through up to 45 dB attenuation in the loopback circuit. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. Background: Esophageal intubation is a widely utilized technique for a diverse array of physiological studies, activating a complex physiological response mediated, in part, by the autonomic nervous system (ANS). In order to determine the optimal time period after intubation when physiological observations should be recorded, it is important to know the duration of, and factors that influence, this ANS response, in both health and disease. Methods: Fifty healthy subjects (27 males, median age 31.9 years, range 20-53 years) and 20 patients with Rome III defined functional chest pain (nine male, median age of 38.7 years, range 28-59 years) had personality traits and anxiety measured. Subjects had heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), sympathetic (cardiac sympathetic index, CSI), and parasympathetic nervous system (cardiac vagal tone, CVT) parameters measured at baseline and in response to per nasum intubation with an esophageal catheter. CSI/CVT recovery was measured following esophageal intubation. Key Results: In all subjects, esophageal intubation caused an elevation in HR, BP, CSI, and skin conductance response (SCR; all p < 0.0001) but concomitant CVT and cardiac sensitivity to the baroreflex (CSB) withdrawal (all p < 0.04). Multiple linear regression analysis demonstrated that longer CVT recovery times were independently associated with higher neuroticism (p < 0.001). Patients had prolonged CSI and CVT recovery times in comparison to healthy subjects (112.5 s vs 46.5 s, p = 0.0001 and 549 s vs 223.5 s, p = 0.0001, respectively). Conclusions & Inferences: Esophageal intubation activates a flight/flight ANS response. Future studies should allow for at least 10 min of recovery time. Consideration should be given to psychological traits and disease status as these can influence recovery. The psychological trait of neuroticism retards autonomic recovery following esophageal intubation in health and functional chest pain. © 2013 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

We present a novel optical comb generation technique based on the use of a multi-harmonic electrical signal for driving the MZM. The proposed scheme is highly power efficient and gives rise to square shaped combs of advanced flatness and side mode suppression ratio while maintaining a stable performance over a long time period. © 2012 OSA.

We examined two subjectively distinct memory states that are elicited during recognition memory in humans and compared them in terms of the gamma oscillations (20–60 Hz) in the electroencepahalogram (EEG) that they induced. These subjective states, ‘recollection’ and ‘familiarity’ both entail correct recognition but one involves a clear and conscious recollection of the event including memory for contextual detail whilst the other involves a sense of familiarity without clear recollection. Here we show that during a verbal recognition memory test, the subjective experience of ‘recollection’ induced higher amplitude gamma oscillations than the subjective experience of ‘familiarity’ in the time period 300–500 ms after stimulus presentation. Recollection, but not familiarity, was also associated with greater functional connectivity in the gamma frequency range between frontal and parietal sites. Furthermore, the magnitude of the gamma functional connectivity varied over time and was modulated at 3 Hz. Previous studies in animals have shown local theta frequency modulation (3–7 Hz) of gamma-oscillations but this is the first time that a similar effect has been reported in the human EEG.

Decision makers in marketing are often faced with rather complicated situations in which decisions have to be made. Let us consider the problem of determining the appropriate advertising budget. A brand manager is asked to determine the optimal budget. He knows that increases in advertising may lead to increased sales, but also lead to increased costs. The advertising expenditures in period t, say 1994, may not only lead to increases in sales in t, but also to increases in t + 1 (1995) and possibly may contribute to the value of the brand for a long time period.2 Increases in sales will result in changes in profit. The decision maker is allowed to spend more advertising money if there is more profit and more sales, thus advertising spending depends on past sales and profit performance. In order to account for these and possibly other relationships it is necessary to formalise these relations. This means that the decision maker has to specify which variables influence which other variables and what the directions of causality between these variables are. To this end a model has to be formalised, data have to be collected and the formalised model has to be calibrated.

Background: Human rhinoviral infections are major contributors to the healthcare burden associated with acute exacerbations of asthma. We, and others have recently demonstrated that rhinovirus (RV)-induced inflammatory responses are mediated by multiple signalling mechanisms, such as IL-1/MyD88 (1) and TLR3/RIGI (2). We have also previously published work showing that TLR signalling is effectively inhibited by phosphatidylserine-containing liposomes (SAPS), through the disruption of membrane microdomains (3). Evidence has also suggested that membrane microdomains may influence infections with RV. In this study, we explored the ability of SAPS to modulate responses to the natural viral pathogens, RV-1B and RV-16. Method: The immortalized bronchial epithelial cell line, BEAS-2B or primary bronchial epithelial cells were infected with RV-1B or RV-16 at a TCID50/ml of 19107 for 1 h. Immediately following infection, various concentrations of SAPS were added and changes in cytokine release were measured at 24 h. SAPS remained present throughout. Type I and III interferon (IFN) expression and rates of viral replication were measured by quantitative PCR. Virus quantification was also performed using a viral CPE assay, and IFN signalling was measured by western blot. Liposome stability was characterised and intracellular trafficking of fluorescently labelled SAPS in BEAS-2B cells was investigated using confocal microscopy. For in vivo studies, female wt Balb/c mice were pre-treated with SAPS for 2 h prior to infection with RV as previously described and changes in BAL cell number, BAL cytokine production and viral replication were quantified (4). Results: Characterisation of SAPS liposomes by mass spectrometry showed no obvious signs of oxidation over the time period tested, and liposome size remained constant. Preliminary confocal studies revealed that SAPS was rapidly internalised within the cell and was found to associate with intracellular compartments such as the early endosome and golgi. Viral infected BEAS-2B cells co-incubated with SAPS, showed notably impaired responses to RV as assessed by release of CXCL8 and CCL5. SAPS also reduced RV-induced IFNb production and STAT-1 phosphorylation, without significantly influencing viral replication rates. Modest increases in viral particle production were only observed at 48 and 72 h time points. Suppression of viral-induced cytokine production was also observed in primary bronchial epithelial cells and pilot in vivo studies showed that SAPS results in reduced KC production at 24 h post viral infection, and this was associated with reduced neutrophil numbers within the BAL fluid. Conclusion: Our data demonstrates a potential means of modulating inflammatory responses induced by human rhinovirus.

This research paper reports on the production of a biocompatible and biodegradable material to be used in a polymer stent used for counteracting the occurrence of anastomotic leakage following gastrointestinal surgery. Chitosan was blended with polycaprolactone in a solvent mixture of acetic acid and water. Membranes were formed with a range of 50/50%, 60/40%, 65/35%, 70/30% and 80/20% polycaprolactone/chitosan. The tensile properties of the blends were examined over a time period to access material degradation. In addition the biocompatibilities of the polycaprolactone/chitosan blends were tested for cytotoxic effect using primary tendon fibroblastic cells. This research concluded that the polycaprolactone/chitosan was non-toxic to the fibroblasts cells in-vitro. Analysis of the mechanical properties of the blends showed a range of mechanical strengths and polymer life spans. Overall, blends of 65/35%, 70/30% and 80/20% polycaprolactone/chitosan emerged as possible candidates for the production of a gastrointestinal stent. © 2011 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Objectives: Hydrogen sulphide has been identified as a gas signalling molecule in the body, and has previously been shown to have vasorelaxant properties. The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of sodium hydrosulphide (NaHS), a hydrogen sulphide donor, on heart rate (HR), left ventricular developed pressure (LVDP) and coronary flow (CF) in the isolated perfused rat heart. Methods: A Langendorff isolated heart preparation was used to investigate the effect of a dose range of sodium hydrosulphide, in the presence and absence of inhibitors, on heart rate, left ventricular developed pressure and coronary flow. Results: Sodium hydrosulphide caused a significant decrease in heart rate at a concentration of 10-3 M (P <0.001). This decrease was partially inhibited by glibenclamide, a K ATP channel blocker (P <0.05); L-NAME, a nitric oxide synthase inhibitor (P <0.001), and methylene blue (P <0.001), but not by H-89, a protein kinase A inhibitor. Sodium hydrosulphide significantly increased coronary flow at concentrations of 10-4 - 10-3M (P <0.05). This response was significantly increased in the presence of L-NAME (P <0.001) and methylene blue (P <0.001), whereas H-89 inhibited the increase in coronary flow due to sodium hydrosulphide (P <0.001). Sodium hydrosulphide significantly decreased LVDP at all concentrations (P <0.001). In the presence of glibenclamide and H-89, the time period of the decrease in LVDP due to sodium hydrosulphide was extended (P <0.001), whereas methylene blue and L-NAME caused a significant reduction in the response to sodium hydrosulphide (P <0.05, P <0.01 respectively). Conclusion: Sodium hydrosulphide reduced heart rate and LVDP, and increased coronary flow in the isolated perfused rat heart; however, the mechanisms of action could not be fully elucidated.

This paper describes the potential of pre-setting 11kV overhead line ratings over a time period of sufficient length to be useful to the real-time management of overhead lines. This forecast is based on short and long term freely available weather forecasts and is used to help investigate the potential for realising dynamic rating benefits on the electricity network. A comparison between the realisable benefits in ratings using this forecast data, over the period of a year has been undertaken.

Background: Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) is a major cause of irreversible visual loss in the elderly and a significant threat to their quality of life. Although low vision services often improve the functional outcomes of individuals with macular disease, it remains unclear whether or not they have any impact on quality of life. The principal aim of this study was to determine the effect of a hospital-based low vision clinic on the quality of life of individuals with ARMD. Methods: Forty patients with ARMD attended the low vision clinic at Milton Keynes University Hospital. Quality of life was measured with the vision-specific Low Vision Quality of Life (LVQOL) questionnaire and the general health EuroQol (EQ-5D-5L) questionnaire. Measures were completed at baseline (time zero, T0), and at three- (T3) and six-month (T6) follow-up visits. Results: The near visual acuity of individuals attending the low vision clinic for the first time improved significantly between visits T0 and T3 (p=0.005), reflecting the practiced use of their newly-dispensed low vision aids. As expected, there was no significant change in near acuity over this time period for existing patients. For both new and existing patients, a significant increase in LVQOL score was evident between visits T0 and T3, with a further significant improvement between T3 and T6. Similarly, there was a significant decrease in EQ-5D-5L questionnaire scores between visits T0 and T6. Conclusions: The higher LVQOL scores obtained at the end of the study period (T6) provide evidence that low vision services at Milton Keynes University Hospital served to improve patient quality of life. The reduction in EQ-5D-5L scores over the same time period suggests that low vision services also provide for an improvement in general health-related quality of life. Impact: The findings support the cause of low vision services to improve not only the vision and functional outcomes of individuals with macular disease but also their quality of life. Moreover, the findings suggest that a more efficient allocation of resources at low vision clinics may be possible through the standardisation of patient follow-up frequency.
