Templated, macroporous Mg-Al hydrotalcites synthesised via alkali-free co-precipitation exhibit superior performance in the transesterification of C4 -C18 triglycerides for biodiesel production, with rate-enhancement increasing with alkyl chain length. Promotion reflects improved diffusion of bulky triglycerides and accessibility of active sites within the hierarchical macropore-micropore architecture. © 2012 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

In this paper we consider the possibility of using intermediate solutions, in which ideal apodisation profile for a dispersion-free, sharp-reflection profile fibre Bragg grating approximated in different degrees. The ideal apodisation profile for a flat dispersion, 50 GHz bandwidth grating was obtained using the layer-peeling algorithm. To verify the modelled results a version of the 5-section grating has been manufactured with excellent agreement between the model and the experimental results. The performance penalty due to multiple reflections from the FBGs in different situations was studied. The results showed that in the approximated gratings some post-compensation must be included to account for the local deviations from zero dispersion. © 2003 IEEE.

Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) is an enzyme which catalyses the conversion of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate to 1,3 diphosphoglycerate. It is considered to be constitutively expressed in all cells, and as such the gene for GAPDH (gapd) is commonly used as a benchmark reference in expression studies. However, previous investigations have demonstrated that gapd may show altered gene expression in a number of disease states and under certain experimental conditions, suggesting that results of experiments using gapd as a control should be interpreted with caution. Furthermore, consideration must be given to the potential co-amplification of pseudogenes of gapd during RT-PCR. Here, we describe a method to avoid the amplification of contaminating pseudogenes through the design of primers that bind only to genuine gapd mRNA transcript. © 2003 Elsevier Ltd. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Chinese women living in the UK. However the literature suggests that Chinese women are less likely to attend breast screening than white British women. No studies have been conducted to explore reasons for low attendance among this specific population. The purpose of this thesis was to understand the psycho-social factors related to breast cancer prevention and screening among Chinese women in the UK, and then to inform a breast screening intervention design. Three studies were conducted. The first was a systematic review of interventions to increase breast screening among Chinese women living in Western countries. The second and third studies used focus groups to explore Chinese women’s beliefs about breast cancer prevention and screening practices among older and younger generations. Finally, Intervention Mapping was used to synthesise the findings of the focus groups with those of the systematic review to design an empirical and theoretical evidence based breast screening intervention directed at Chinese women who are non-adherent to the NHS Breast Screening Programme. The qualitative findings revealed that older participants held a more holistic view of health maintenance, and had less knowledge about breast cancer and its causes than younger participants. They showed positive attitudes to breast screening and most had responded to receiving a mammography invitation. Language was a key barrier to older participants using medical care and obtaining health-related information. Younger participants expressed high dissatisfaction with health care in UK and showed a strong ‘neo-fatalistic’ view of breast cancer prevention, believing the main cause of breast cancer to be genetic predisposition. The synthesis of findings suggest that healthcare providers need to take Chinese cultural and language concerns, but also the differences between generations, into account when designing and implementing breast screening services and educational programmes which target Chinese women.

Low density lipoprotein levels (LDL) are consistently elevated in cardiovascular disease. It has been suggested that those with high circulating LDL levels in mid-life may be susceptible to develop neurodegenerative diseases in later life. In the circulation, high levels of LDL are associated with increased oxidative modification (oxLDL) and nitration. We have investigated the hypothesis that disruption of blood brain barrier function by oxLDL and their lipids may increase risk of neurodegeneration in later life and that statin intervention in mid-life can mitigate the neurodegenerative effects of hyperlipidaemia. Blood from statin-naïve, normo- and hyperlipidaemic subjects (n=10/group) was collected at baseline. Hyperlipidaemic subjects received statin-intervention whereas normolipidaemic subjects did not prior to a second blood sampling, taken after 3 months. The intervention will be completed in June 2013. Plasma was separated by centrifugation (200g, 30min) and LDL was isolated by potassium bromide density gradient ultracentrifugation. Total homocysteine, LDL cholesterol, 8-isoprostane F2α levels were measured in plasma using commercial kits. LDL were analysed by agarose gel electrophoresis. LDL-lipids were extracted by partitioning in 1:1 chloroform:methanol (v/v) and conjugated to fatty acid free-BSA in serum-free EGM-2 medium (4hrs, 370C) for co-culture with human microvascular endothelial cells (HMVEC). HMVEC were maintained on polycarbonate inserts for two weeks to create a microvascular barrier. Change in barrier permeability was measured by trans-endothelial electrical resistance (TER), FITC-dextran permeability and immunohistochemistry. HMVEC glutathione (GSH) levels were measured after 2 hours by GSH-glo assay. LDL isolated from statin-naïve hyperlipidaemic subjects had higher mobility by agarose gel electrophoresis (Rf;0.53±0.06) and plasma 8-isoprostane F2α (43.5±8.42 pg/ml) compared to control subjects (0.46±0.05 and 24.2±5.37 pg/ml; p<0.05). Compared to HMVEC treatment with the LDL-lipids (5μM) from normolipidaemic subjects, LDL-lipids from hyperlipidaemic subjects increased barrier permeability (103.4±12.5 Ωcm2 v 66.7±7.3 Ωcm2,P<0.01) and decreased GSH (18.5 nmol/mg v 12.3 nmol/mg; untreated cells 26.2±3.6 nmol/mg).
