Copper(II) complexes of some pyridine-2-carboxamidrazones have been prepared and characterized. The crystal structures of the copper complex cis-[dichloro(N1-2-acetylthiophene-pyridine-2-carboxamidrazone) copper(II)] 8a and one of the free ligands, viz. {(p-chloro-2-thioloxy-benzylidine-pyridine-2-carboxamidrazone)} 6, have been determined. The former shows a highly distorted square planar geometry around copper, with weak intermolecular coordination from the thiophenyl sulfur resulting in a stacking arrangement in the crystal lattice. The in vitro activities of the synthesized compounds against the malarial parasite Plasmodium falciparum are reported for the first time, which clearly shows the advantage of copper complexation and the requirement of four coordinate geometry around copper as some of the key structural features for designing such metal-based antimalarials. © 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. Single- and multi-core passive and active germanate and tellurite glass fibers represent a new class of fiber host for in-fiber photonics devices and applications in mid-IR wavelength range, which are in increasing demand. Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) structures have been proven as one of the most functional in-fiber devices and have been mass-produced in silicate fibers by UV-inscription for almost countless laser and sensor applications. However, because of the strong UV absorption in germanate and tellurite fibers, FBG structures cannot be produced by UVinscription. In recent years femtosecond (fs) lasers have been developed for laser machining and microstructuring in a variety of glass fibers and planar substrates. A number of papers have been reported on fabrication of FBGs and long-period gratings in optical fibers and also on the photosensitivity mechanism using 800nm fs lasers. In this paper, we demonstrate for the first time the fabrication of FBG structures created in passive and active single- and three-core germanate and tellurite glass fibers by using 800nm fs-inscription and phase mask technique. With a fs peak power intensity in the order of 1011W/cm2, the FBG spectra with 2nd and 3rd order resonances at 1540nm and 1033nm in a single-core germanate glass fiber and 2nd order resonances between ~1694nm and ~1677nm with strengths up to 14dB in all three cores of three-core passive and active tellurite fibers were observed. Thermal and strain properties of the FBGs made in these mid-IR glass fibers were characterized, showing an average temperature responsivity of ~20pm/°C and a strain sensitivity of 1.219±0.003pm/µe.

The curvature- or bend-sensing response of long-period gratings (LPGs) UV inscribed in D-shaped fiber has been investigated experimentally. Strong fiber-orientation dependence of the spectral response when such LPGs are subjected to bending at different directions has been observed and is shown to form the basis for a new class of single-device sensor with vector-sensing capability. Potential applications utilizing the linear response and unique bend-orientation characteristics of the devices are discussed.

We have measured the optical phase sensitivity of fiber based on poly(methyl methacrylate) under near-single-mode conditions at 632.8 nm wavelength. The elongation sensitivity is 131±3×105 rad m-1 and the temperature sensitivity is -212±26 rad m-1 K-1. These values are somewhat larger than those for silica fiber and are consistent with the values expected on the basis of the bulk polymer properties.

We report a compact two-dimensional accelerometer based upon a simple fiber cantilever constructed from a short length of multicore optical fiber. Two-axis measurement is demonstrated up to 3 kHz. Differential measurement between fiber Bragg gratings written in the multicore fiber provides temperature- insensitive measurements.

We report the implementation of vector bending sensors using long-period gratings (LPGs) UV-inscribed in flat-clad, four-core and D-shaped fibres. Our experiments reveal a strong fibre-orientation dependence of the spectral response when such LPGs are subjected to dynamic bending, which provided an opportunity to realize curvature measurement with direction recognition.

The sensitivities of type I and IIA fibre Bragg gratings written to different reflectivities in SMF-28 and B/Ge fibres to ionizing radiation up to 0.54MGy are investigated. The Bragg wavelength shows a small and rapid increase at the start of irradiation followed by either a plateau (type I) or a decrease (type IIA).

Strain and thermal sensitivities of germanate and tellurite glass fibres were measured using a fibre Fabry-Perot (FFP) interferometer and fibre Bragg gratings (FBG). The strain phase sensitivity for germanate and tellurite fibre were 5900×103 rad/m and 5600×103 rad/m respectively at a central wavelength of 1540nm using FFP interferometer, which is consistent with the value of 1.22pm/µepsilon obtained for a germanate fibre FBG. The Young's modulus for germanate and tellurite fibre were also measured to be 58GPa and 37GPa. The thermal responses of germanate fibre were examined as 24.71 and 16.80 pm/°C at 1540nm and 1033nm wavelength using the FBG.

A multicore fibre (MCF) sensor to measure the radial deformation of a compliant cylinder under compression is presented. The sensor is connectorised and need not be permanently bonded to the test object. A differential measurement technique using FBGs written into the MCF makes the sensor temperature insensitive. FBG measurement of axial strain of a cylinder under compression is also reported.
