Volatile C1-C7 components in sediments were examined for Japan Trench DSDP Sites 438, 439, 435, 440, 434 and 436, proceeding from west to east. Levels of all components are lowest in the highly fractured sediments of Sites 440 and 434. A number of alkenes, furans, and sulfur compounds were detected in concentrations higher than noted in any other DSDP sediments examined to date. The types, amounts, and specificity of occurrence are similar to those for 1-meter gravity cores we have examined which bear a significant biological imprint. Site 436 shows high levels of saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons, as well as olefins, including traces of dimethycyclopentanes and the highest level of cyclohexene detected in any DSDP sediment we have examined to date. The results from Site 436 were unexpected, considering the low organic-carbon content, absence of biogenic methane, and evidence of an aerobic depositional environment at this site.

The organic geochemical character of rocks selected from Aptian, Valanginian, and Berriasian clay stone and siltstone sequences encountered in Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Holes 762C and 763C on the Exmouth Plateau was determined by means of a variety of analytical procedures. These sequences represent distal portions of the Mesozoic Barrow delta, in which petroleum source rocks and reservoirs exist on the Australian continent. The organic matter at the ODP sites is thermally immature type III material. Biomarker hydrocarbon compositions are dominated by long-chain, waxy n-alkanes and by C29 steranes, which reflect the land-plant origin of organic matter. Organic carbon d13C values ranged from -26 per mil to -28 per mil, consistent with a C3 land-plant source. Kerogen pyrolysate compositions and hopane isomerization ratios revealed progressively larger contributions of recycled organic matter as the depth of the deltaic sedimentary layers became greater.

Analysis of the molecular composition of the organic matter (OM) from whole sediment samples can avoid analytical bias that might result from isolation of components from the sediment matrix, but has its own analytical challenges. We evaluated the use of GC * GC-ToFMS to analyze the pyrolysis products of six whole sediment samples obtained from above, within and below a 1 million year old OM-rich Mediterranean sapropel layer. We found differences in pyrolysis products thiophenes in the sapropels than in the marls is consistent with the existence of euxinic conditions during sapropel deposition. The combination of whole sediment pyrolysis and GC × GC-ToFMS is promising, but the procedure requires careful selection of its multiple analytical variables, particularly the pyrolysis temperature and the operational features of the GC columns.
