Incorporating the values of the services that ecosystems provide into decision making is becoming increasingly common in nature conservation and resource management policies, both locally and globally. Yet with limited funds for conservation of threatened species and ecosystems there is a desire to identify priority areas where investment efficiently conserves multiple ecosystem services. We mapped four mangrove ecosystems services (coastal protection, fisheries, biodiversity, and carbon storage) across Fiji. Using a cost-effectiveness analysis, we prioritised mangrove areas for each service, where the effectiveness was a function of the benefits provided to the local communities, and the costs were associated with restricting specific uses of mangroves. We demonstrate that, although priority mangrove areas (top 20%) for each service can be managed at relatively low opportunity costs (ranging from 4.5 to 11.3% of overall opportunity costs), prioritising for a single service yields relatively low co-benefits due to limited geographical overlap with priority areas for other services. None-the-less, prioritisation of mangrove areas provides greater overlap of benefits than if sites were selected randomly for most ecosystem services. We discuss deficiencies in the mapping of ecosystems services in data poor regions and how this may impact upon the equity of managing mangroves for particular services across the urban-rural divide in developing countries. Finally we discuss how our maps may aid decision-makers to direct funding for mangrove management from various sources to localities that best meet funding objectives, as well as how this knowledge can aid in creating a national mangrove zoning scheme.

Upper Quaternary calcareous nannofossils contained in drill cores taken in the heavily sedimented Middle Valley of the northern Juan de Fuca Ridge in the northeast Pacific Ocean (Ocean Drilling Program Leg 139) are investigated. The host sediments have been subjected at depth to high temperatures and hot hydrothermal fluids that have altered or destroyed in part or in toto the nannofossil assemblages, thereby raising at several sites the level of the first (deepest) stratigraphic occurrence of nannofossils or of the important Emiliania huxleyi datum. The degree of alteration of the nannofossil assemblages is dependent on the intensity of the hydrothermal activity, which is indicated by paleotemperatures derived independently from studies of color alteration of palynomorphs and by vitrinite reflectance (Mao et al., this volume). State of preservation and the downhole level at which assemblages have been destroyed correlate well with the inferred paleotemperature estimates. Destruction of the assemblages appears to be species selective and follows in general the dissolution rankings determined independently by others for Recent nannofossils of the Pacific basin. More systematic correlation of these phenomena is hampered, however, by the fact that nannofossil preservation is already quite variable at the time of deposition because of the predominance of turbidite activity in the study area.

Between 1980 and 1985 ninety-seven stations were sampled by Smith-Mclntyre grab from the offshore northern section of the North Sea. Four hundred and nine infaunal species were identified from the 76 selected macrofaunal stations. The number of species per station varied from 25 to 80 with a maximum abundance of 9,600 individuals m**2. The biomass ranged from 0.13 to 18.86 g dry weight m**2. At most stations, however, biomass varied between 1 and 4 g dry weight m**2. Diversity and abundance were highest in the 120-140 m zone, characterised by fine sand containing variable amounts of silt. The highest biomasses were recorded in two areas; firstly where stronger currents predominate and the sediments are coarser (east of Shetland and west of the Norwegian Trough), and secondly in the fine sandy deposits of the centrally located area. In the silty sediments (Fladen Ground and smaller depressions) there was a predominantly subsurface deposit-feeding community, whereas in the coarser area east of the Shetlands carnivores predominated. Over the remaining area surface deposit feeders were dominant.

Oxygen and carbon isotopic data for 13 planktonic foraminifers from the Miocene of DSDP Site 289 strongly support the idea that the species have a preferred depth habitat and that their depth relationships remained largely unchanged during the Miocene. However, the relative depth rankings of Globorotalia (Menardella) menardii and Globorotalia (Menardella) limbata changed from deep to intermediate and from deep to shallow, respectively, during the late Miocene between ~9.9 and 7.5 Ma.
