Expanding visitation to Polar regions combined with climate warming increases the potential for alien species introduction and establishment. We quantified vascular plant propagule pressure associated with different groups of travelers to the high-Arctic archipelago of Svalbard, and evaluated the potential of introduced seeds to germinate under the most favorable average Svalbard soil temperature (10°C). We sampled the footwear of 259 travelers arriving by air to Svalbard during the summer of 2008, recording 1,019 seeds: a mean of 3.9 (±0.8) seeds per traveler. Assuming the seed influx is representative for the whole year, we estimate a yearly seed load of around 270,000 by this vector alone. Seeds of 53 species were identified from 17 families, with Poaceae having both highest diversity and number of seeds. Eight of the families identified are among those most invasive worldwide, while the majority of the species identified were non-native to Svalbard. The number of seeds was highest on footwear that had been used in forested and alpine areas in the 3 months prior to traveling to Svalbard, and increased with the amount of soil affixed to footwear. In total, 26% of the collected seeds germinated under simulated Svalbard conditions. Our results demonstrate high propagule transport through aviation to highly visited cold-climate regions and isolated islands is occurring. Alien species establishment is expected to increase with climate change, particularly in high latitude regions, making the need for regional management considerations a priority.

During ODP Leg 111 Hole 504B was extended 212 m deeper into the sheeted dikes of oceanic Layer 2, for a total penetration of 1288 m within basement. Study of the mineralogy, chemistry, and stable isotopic compositions of the rocks recovered on Leg 111 has confirmed and extended the previous model for hydrothermal alteration at the site: axial greenschist hydrothermal metamorphism was followed by seawater recharge and subsequent off-axis alteration. The dikes are depleted in 18O (mean delta18O = +5.1 ? +/- 0.6 ?) relative to fresh mid-ocean ridge basalt. Oxygen isotopic data on whole rocks and isolated secondary minerals indicate temperatures during axial metamorphism of 250°-350°C and water/rock ratios about one. Increasing amounts of actinolite with depth in the dike section, however, suggest that temperatures increased downward in the dikes. Pyrite + pyrrhotite + chalcopyrite + magnetite was the stable sulfide + oxide mineral assemblage during axial alteration, but these minerals partly re-equilibrated later at temperatures less than 200°C. The dikes sampled on Leg 111 contain an average of 500 ppm sulfur, slightly lower than igneous values. The delta34S values of sulfide average 0?, which indicates the presence of basaltic sulfide and incorporation of little or no seawater-derived sulfide into the rocks. These data are consistent with models for the presence of rock-dominated sulfur in deep hydrothermal fluids. The presence of anhydrite at 1176 m within basement indicates that unaltered seawater can penetrate to significant depths in the crust during recharge.

Triassic turbidites of the Nanpanjiang basin of south China represent the most expansive and voluminous siliciclastic turbidite accumulation in south China. The Nanpanjiang basin occurs at a critical junction between the southern margin of the south China plate and the Indochina, Siamo and Sibumasu plates to the south and southwest. The Triassic Yangtze carbonate shelf and isolated carbonated platforms in the basin have been extensively studied, but silicilastic turbidites in the basin have received relatively little attention. Deciphering the facies, paleocurrent indicators and provenance of the Triassic turbidites is important for several reasons: it promises to help resolve the timing of plate collisions along suture zones bordering the basin to the south and southwest, it will enable evaluation of which suture zones and Precambrian massifs were source areas, and it will allow an evaluation of the impact of the siliciclastic flux on carbonate platform evolution within the basin. Turbidites in the basin include the Early Triassic Shipao Formation and the Middle-Late Triassic Baifeng, Xinyuan, Lanmu Bianyang and Laishike formations. Each ranges upward of 700 m and the thickest is nearly 3 km. The turbidites contain very-fine sand in the northern part of the basin whereas the central and southern parts of the basin also commonly contain fine and rarely medium sand size. Coarser sand sizes occur where paleocurrents are from the south, and in this area some turbidites exhibit complete bouma sequences with graded A divisions. Successions contain numerous alternations between mud-rich and sand-rich intervals with thickness trends corresponding to proximal/ distal fan components. Spectacularly preserved sedimentary structures enable robust evaluation of turbidite systems and paleocurrent analyses. Analysis of paleocurrent measurements indicates two major directions of sediment fill. The northern part of the basin was sourced primarily by the Jiangnan massif in the northeast, and the central and southern parts of the basin were sourced primarily from suture zones and the Yunkai massif to the south and southeast respectively. Sandstones of the Lower Triassic Shipao Fm. have volcaniclastic composition including embayed quartz and glass shards. Middle Triassic sandstones are moderately mature, matrix-rich, lithic wackes. The average QFL ratio from all point count samples is 54.1/18.1/27.8% and the QmFLt ratio is 37.8/ 18.1/ 44.1%. Lithic fragments are dominantly claystone and siltstone clasts and metasedimentary clasts such as quartz mica tectonite. Volcanic lithics are rare. Most samples fall in the recycled orogen field of QmFLt plots, indicating a relatively quartz and lithic rich composition consistent with derivation from Precambrian massifs such as the Jiangnan, and Yunkai. A few samples from the southwest part of the basin fall into the dissected arc field, indicating a somewhat more lithic and feldspar-rich composition consistent with derivation from a suture zone Analysis of detrial zircon populations from 17 samples collected across the basin indicate: (1) Several samples contain zircons with concordant ages greater than 3000 Ma, (2) there are widespread peaks across the basin at 1800 Ma and 2500, (3) a widespread 900 Ma population, (3) a widespread population of zircons at 440 Ma, and (5) a larger population of younger zircons about 250 Ma in the southwestern part which is replaced to the north and northwest by a somewhat older population around 260-290 Ma. The 900 Ma provenance fits derivation from the Jiangnan Massif, the 2500, 1800, and 440 Ma provenance fits the Yunkai massif, and the 250 Ma is consistent with convergence and arc development in suture zones bordering the basin on the south or southwest. Early siliciclastic turbidite flux, proximal to source areas impacted carbonate platform evolution by infilling the basin, reducing accommodation space, stabilizing carbonate platform margins and promoting margin progradation. Late arrival, in areas far from source areas caused margin aggradation over a starved basin, development of high relief aggradational escarpments and unstable scalloped margins.

Four petrographic lava types occur, ranging from aphyric to moderately phyric clinopyroxene-olivine tholeiitic basalts (Unit 1); olivine-clinopyroxene picritic basalts, sparsely to strongly olivine-phyric (Unit 3-type); olivine-clinopyroxene basalts (clinopyroxene dominant) (Unit 4); and moderately to strongly phyric two-pyroxene-plagioclase basaltic andesites (Unit 9-type). The olivine phyric lavas contain forsteritic olivines (extending to Fo92), and very magnesian Cr-rich spinels similar to those occurring in boninitic lavas. The basaltic andesites are mineralogically and petrographically indistinguishable from the modern Tofua Arc basaltic andesites, one notable feature being the highly calcic cores in plagioclase phenocrysts (up to An95). The forsteritic olivines, the Cr-spinels, and the calcic plagioclases are unlikely to have been precipitated in the lava compositions in which they occur, and are thought to have been incorporated from highly primitive melts by way of mixing processes (as advocated by Allan, this volume). Notwithstanding the evidence for mixing, the major element chemistries of the Unit 1- and Unit 9-type lavas are shown to be consistent with the derivation of the Unit 9-type basaltic andesites by means of fractional crystallization, through magmas of similar chemistry to Unit 1. Some trace element discrepancies in the modeling, and the relative volcanic stratigraphy of Site 839, however, preclude a direct liquid line of descent between the actual recovered units. Trace element data as well as TiO2 and Na2O data clearly illustrate the arc-like affinities of the magmas, with strong highfield-strength element depletion and large-ion-lithophile element enrichment. The abundance patterns are very close to those of the Tofua and Kermadec arc magmas, and also Valu Fa. Pb-, Sr-, and Nd-isotopic compositions indicate closest affinities with a "Pacific" MORB source, apparently characteristic of the western, older part of the Lau Basin. A subduction-related isotopic contribution is, however, inferred. The sources of the Site 839 magmas are thus inferred to be similar to, but less depleted geochemically, than those of the modern Tofua Arc magmas. The Site 839 sequence is interpreted as an older remnant of a volcanic construct of the "proto-Tofua arc", originally developed adjacent to the Tonga Ridge. Opening of the eastern Lau Basin, because of southward migrating propagators, has split and isolated the sequence, leaving it stranded within the modern Lau Basin.

We performed the field-work during the dry (March 2014) and reainy season (May and June 2014) at the species type locality: Cerro Socopó, located at central-west region between Falcón, Lara and Zulia states, Venezuela. Socopó is a small and isolated mountain (1.571 m) belonging to the Ziruma mountains, and represents a relict of tropical mountain forest surrounded by semi-arid vegetation and grassland. This area is home to 312 species of vertebrates, including endangered and endemic amphibians species like Mannophryne lamarcai, Leptodactylus magistris and Dendropsophus amicorum. These forest and species are severely threatened by cattle ranch and illegal timber extraction, with forest formations only above 1000 meters. Despite this, no legal protected figure has been established in the area. We identified a 2.5 km secondary road transect within the study area based on the following criteria: 1) it cover different habitat types (streams and lagoons); and 2) it within the altitudinal gradient described for the specie (1,040 to 1,363 m). We identified three sampling points throughout the transect located in the vicinity of wetland habits: socopo1, socopo2 and socopo4. We did two types of recordings: 1) high quality recordings to characterize the advertisement call for M. lamarcai, non described to date (socopo4), and 2) recordings in different sampling points to evaluate call detectors performance in different acoustic scenarios (in all three localities).

We measured the relationship between CO2-induced seawater acidification, photo-physiological performance and intracellular pH (pHi) in a model cnidarian-dinoflagellate symbiosis - the sea anemone Aiptasia sp. -under ambient (289.94 ± 12.54 µatm), intermediate (687.40 ± 25.10 µatm) and high (1459.92 ± 65.51 µatm) CO2 conditions. These treatments represented current CO2 levels, in addition to CO2 stabilisation scenarios IV and VI provided by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Anemones were exposed to each treatment for two months and sampled at regular intervals. At each time-point we measured a series of physiological responses: maximum dark-adapted fluorescent yield of PSII (Fv/Fm), gross photosynthetic rate, respiration rate, symbiont population density, and light-adapted pHi of both the dinoflagellate symbiont and isolated host anemone cell. We observed increases in all but one photo-physiological parameter (Pgross:R ratio). At the cellular level, increases in light-adapted symbiont pHi were observed under both intermediate and high CO2 treatments, relative to control conditions (pHi 7.35 and 7.46 versus pHi 7.25, respectively). The response of light-adapted host pHi was more complex, however, with no change observed under the intermediate CO2 treatment, but a 0.3 pH-unit increase under the high CO2 treatment (pHi 7.19 and 7.48, respectively). This difference is likely a result of a disproportionate increase in photosynthesis relative to respiration at the higher CO2 concentration. Our results suggest that, rather than causing cellular acidosis, the addition of CO2 will enhance photosynthetic performance, enabling both the symbiont and host cell to withstand predicted ocean acidification scenarios.

During drilling at Sites 759, 760, and 761 of Leg 122 (Exmouth Plateau, northwest Australia), a thick section of Upper Triassic sediments was recovered. Paleomagnetic analyses were made on 398 samples from Holes 759B, 760A, 760B, and 761C. Progressive thermal demagnetization, alternating field demagnetization, or mixed treatment removed an initial unstable component and isolated a characteristic remanent magnetization which is of normal or reversed polarity. The magnetostratigraphic results allow us to propose a magnetic polarity sequence which extends from the upper Carnian to lower Rhaetian. This sequence reveals many more reversals than previously suggested from paleomagnetic studies. The magnetostratigraphic data also allow us to suggest correlations between Sites 759 and 760.

The remote South Sandwich arc is an archipelago of small volcanic islands and seamounts entirely surrounded by deep water and about 600 km away from the closest island, South Georgia. As some of the youngest islands (< 5 m.y.) in the Southern Ocean they are ideal for studying colonization processes of the seabed by benthic fauna, but are rarely investigated because of remoteness and extreme weather. The current study attempted to quantify the richness and abundance of the epibenthic macrofauna around the Southern Thule group by taking five epibenthic sledge samples along a depth transect including three shelf (one at 300 m and two at 500 m) and two slope stations (1000 and 1500 m). Our aim was to investigate higher taxon richness and community composition in an isolated Antarctic locality, since recent volcanic eruptions between 1964 and 1997. We examined patterns across all epibenthic macrofauna at phylum and class levels, and investigated trends in some model groups of crustaceans to order and family level. We found that abundance was highest in the shallowest sample and decreased with depth. Shelf samples (300 and 500 m) were dominated by molluscs and malacostracans while at the deeper stations (1000 and 1500 m) nematodes were the most abundant taxon. Surprisingly, the shallow shelf was dominated by animals with restricted dispersal abilities, such as direct developing brooders (malacostracans) or those with lecithotrophic larvae (bivalves of the genus Yoldiella, most bryozoan species). Despite Southern Thule's geological youth, recent eruptions, and its remoteness the shallow shelf was rich in higher taxa (phyla/classes) as well as orders and families of our model groups. Future work at higher taxonomic resolution (species level) should greatly increase understanding of how life has reached and established on these young and highly disturbed seabeds.

Coarse-fraction studies of sediments recovered during ODP Leg 104 are used to reconstruct paleoclimatic and paleoceanographic environments on a time scale of 0.1 to 0.5 m.y. for the past 20 Ma. These investigations suggest that relatively warm climates and isolated deep water conditions prevailed prior to 13.6 Ma and between 5.6-4.8 Ma. The first major deep water outflow from the Norwegian-Greenland Sea into the North Atlantic took place at about 13.6 Ma. Progressive cooling linked to increased deep water renewal in the Norwegian-Greenland Sea appears to have occurred between 13.6-5.6 Ma and 4.8-3.1 Ma. A major onset of ice-rafted debris is recorded at 2.56 Ma. Terrigenous coarsefraction components show important fluctuations with two major peaks during the past 0.8 Ma.
