Underwater spectral reflectance was measured for selected biotic and abiotic coral reef features of Glovers Reef, Belize from March 6 - 10, 2005. Spectral reflectance's of 63 different benthic types were obtained in-situ. An Ocean Optics USB2000 spectrometer was deployed in an custom made underwater housing with a 0.5 m fiber-optic probe mounted next to an artificial light source. Spectral readings were collected with the probe (bear fibre) about 5 cm from the target to ensure that the target would fill the field of view of the fiber optic (FOV diameter ~4.4 cm), as well as to reduce the attenuating effect of the intermediate water (Roelfsema et al., 2006). Spectral readings included for one target included: 1 reading of the covered spectral fibre to correct for instrument noise, 1 reading of spectralon panel mounted on divers wrist to measure incident ambient light, and 8 readings of the target. Spectral reflectance was calculated for each target by first subtracting the instrument noise reading from each other reading. The corrected target readings were then divided by the corrected spectralon reading resulting in spectral reflectance of each target reading. An average target spectral reflectance was calculated by averaging the eight individual spectral reflectance's of the target. If an individual target spectral reflectance was visual considered an outlier, it was not included in the average spectral reflectance calculation. See Roelfsema at al. (2006) for additional info on the methodology of underwater spectra collection.

Underwater spectral reflectance was measured for selected biotic and abiotic coral reef features of Heron Reef from June 25-30, 2006. Spectral reflectance's of 105 different benthic types were obtained in-situ. An Ocean Optics USB2000 spectrometer was deployed in an custom made underwater housing with a 0.5 m fiber-optic probe mounted next to an artificial light source. Spectral readings were collected with the probe(bear fibre) about 5 cm from the target to ensure that the target would fill the field of view of the fiber optic (FOV diameter ~4.4 cm), as well as to reduce the attenuating effect of the intermediate water (Roelfsema et al., 2006). A methodology of experimental simulation of state of spent nuclear fuel that occurs on the sea floor due to some catastrophes or dumping is developed. Data on long-term (more than 2000 days) experiments on estimation of 85Kr and 137Cs release rate from spent nuclear fuel (fragments of irradiated UO2 pellets) were firstly obtained; these estimates prove correctness of a hypothesis offered by us in early 1990s concerning to earlier 85Kr release (by one order of magnitude higher than that of 137Cs) as compared to other fission fragments in case of loss of integrity of fuel containment as a result of corrosion on the sea floor. A method and technique of onboard 85Kr and 137Cs sampling and extraction (as well as sampling of tritium, product of triple 235U fission) and their radiometric analysis at coastal laboratories are developed. Priority data on 85Kr background in bottom layers of the Barents and Kara Seas and 137Cs and 3H in these seas (state of 2003) are presented. Models necessary for estimation of dilution of fission products of spent nuclear fuel and their transport on the floor in accident and dumping regions are developed. An experimental method for examination of state of spent nuclear fuel on the sea floor (one expedition each 2-3 years) by 85Kr release into environment (a leak tracer) is proposed; this release is an indicator of destruction of fuel containment and release of products of spent nuclear fuel in case of 235UO2 corrosion in sea water.

The Tara Oceans Expedition (2009-2013) sampled the world oceans on board a 36 m long schooner, collecting environmental data and organisms from viruses to planktonic metazoans for later analyses using modern sequencing and state-of-the-art imaging technologies. Tara Oceans Data are particularly suited to study the genetic, morphological and functional diversity of plankton. The present data set is a registry of all samples collected during the Tara Oceans Expedition (2009-2013). The registry provides details about the sampling location and methodology of each sample. Uniform resource locators (URLs) offer direct links to additional contextual environmental data published at PANGAEA, and to the corresponding nucleotides data published at the European Nucleotides Archive (EBI-ENA).

The main features of geological structures of ocean rift zones based on results of studies of the P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology with use of manned submersibles "Pisces" are under consideration in the book. Multiyear experience of geological exploration in rift zones with the use of these submersibles is summarized. Methodology of underwater operations is described. The main structural features of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden rifts as well as the rift zone of the Reykjanes Ridge are considered.
