I analyzed Leg 57 sediments organogeochemically and spectroscopically. Organic carbon and extractable organic matter prevail from the Pliocene to the Miocene. Humic acids occur widely from the Pleistocene to the lower Miocene and one portion of the Oligocene. The absence of humic acids in Oligocene and Cretaceous samples suggests that humic acids had changed to kerogen. Visible spectroscopic data reveal that humic acids in this study have a low degree of condensed aromatic-ring system, which is a feature of anaerobic conditions during deposition, and that chlorophyll derivatives that had at first combined with humic acids moved to the solvent- soluble fraction during diagenesis. The elemental compositions of humic acids show high H/C and O/C ratios, which seem appropriate to a stage before transformation to kerogen. The relation between the linewidths and g-values on the electron spin resonance data indicates that the free radicals in humic acids are quite different from those in kerogen. The low spin concentrations of kerogen and the yields of humic acids up to the lower Miocene demonstrate that organic matter in these sediments is immature. The foregoing indicate the necessity to isolate humic acids even in ancient rocks in the study of kerogen.

Lithobiostratigraphic data indicate that the double reflectors on the seismic profile through Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1148 represent two unconformities that coincide, respectively, with the lower/upper Oligocene boundary at ~488 mcd, and Oligocene-Miocene boundary at 460 mcd. Two other unconformities, at ~478 and 472 mcd, respectively, were also identified within the upper Oligocene section. Together they erased a sediment record of about 3 Ma from this locality in a period of very active seafloor spreading. The existence of 32.8 Ma marine sediment at the terminated depth (850 mcd) indicates that the initial breakup of the South China Sea (SCS) was probably during 34-33 Ma, close to the Eocene-Oligocene boundary. High sedimentation rates of 60-115 m/my from the much expanded, N350 m lower Oligocene section resulted from rifting and rapid subsidence between 33 and 29 Ma. The mid-Oligocene unconformity at ~28.5 Ma, which also occurred in many parts of the Indo-West Pacific region, was probably related to a significant uplift of the Himalayan-Tibetan Plateau to the west and the initial collision between Indonesia and Australia in the south. A narrowed Indonesian seaway may have accounted for the late Oligocene warming and chalk deposition in the northern South China Sea including the Site 1148 locality. The unconformities and slumps near the Oligocene-Miocene boundary indicate a very unstable tectonic regime, probably corresponding to changes in the rotation of different land blocks and the seafloor spreading ridge from nearly E-W to NE-SW, as recognized earlier at magnetic Anomaly 7. This 25 Ma event also saw the first New Guinea terrane docking at the northern Australian craton. The low sedimentation rate of ~15 m/my in the early to middle Miocene may correspond to another period of rapid seafloor spreading and rapid widespread subsidence that effectively caused sediment source areas to retreat with a rapidly rising sea level. The isostatic nature of these late Oligocene unconformities and slumps with several major collision-uplift events indicate that the rapid changes in the early evolutionary history of the South China Sea were mainly responding to regional tectonic reconfiguration including the uplift-driven southeast extrusion of the Indochina subcontinent.

Phytoplankton cell size is important to biogeochemical and food web processes. The goal of this study is to estimate phytoplankton cell size distribution from satellite imagery of spectral remote sensing reflectance (Rrs(lambda)). Previous studies have indicated phytoplankton size classes have distinctive absorption spectra despite the physiological and taxonomic variability within an assemblage. For this study, the chlorophyll specific absorption spectra for phytoplankton size class extremes, pico- and microphytoplankton, are weighted by the percent microplankton (Sfm) and are the basis of phytoplankton size retrieval from SeaWiFS imagery. Satellite retrievals of Sfm are done through implementation of a forward optical model look-up table (LUT) that incorporates the range of absorption and scattering variability due to phytoplankton size, chlorophyll concentration ([Chl]) and dissolved and detrital matter (acdm(443)) in the global ocean from which Rrs(lambda) is calculated by the radiative transfer software, Hydrolight. The Hydrolight modeled Rrs(lambda) options for a given combination of [Chl] and acdm(443) within the LUT vary only due to Sfm. For a given pixel, the LUT search space was limited by satellite imagery of [Chl] and acdm(443). Within the narrowed search space, SeaWiFS Rrs(lambda) was matched with the closest LUT Rrs(lambda) option and the associated Sfm was assigned. Thresholds at which changes in Rrs(lambda) due to Sfm could be discerned were established in terms of [Chl] and acdm(443). In situ high-precision liquid chromatography-derived estimates of cell size are used in conjunction with matched daily satellite estimates of Sfm for validation and agree well. A single month is displayed as an example of the Sfm retrieval.
