The size distribution of sulphate containing particles over the North Atlantic was determined for particles with radii larger than 0.18 µm. It is compared with the size distributions of the total aerosol, the hygroscopic and the insoluble parts in the maritime aerosol. From mass concentrations of sulphate and sodium, it can be concluded that only a fraction of sulphate originates from the ocean. The sulphate mass distribution separated into its sea salt sulphate and excess sulphate components is compared with a continental distribution.

Geomorphology of the Guinea Basin is described along with sediments from cores collected on the abyssal plain, within the abyssal hill zone, and in the eastern part of the Chain Fracture Zone. Stratigraphic differentiation of deep-sea sediments was based on diatom analysis, geochemical and lithological data. Holocene and Pleistocene were identified by these criteria. The lower boundary of Holocene is was found from a marked decrease in CaCO3 concentration and total diatom count. Mineral and chemical compositions are given for coarse silt fraction of various Late Pleistocene sediments. It is shown that this facial complex is determined by tectonic position of the Guinea Basin.

Geological features of some areas of the Tropical Atlantic (stratigraphy, tectonic structure, lithology, distribution of ore components in bottom sediments, petrography of bedrocks, etc.) are under consideration in the book. Regularities of concentration of trace elements in iron-manganese nodules, features of these nodules in bottom sediments, distribution of phosphorite nodules and other phosphorites have been studied. Much attention is paid to rocks of the ocean crust. A wide range of mineralization represented by magnetite, chromite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, pentlandite, and other minerals has been found.

Sample preparation technique is critical for valid chemical analyses. A main source of error comes from the fact that the great specific surface area of crusts or nodules enhances their tendency to retain or attract hygroscopic moisture. Variable treatment of this moisture can in extreme cases lead to analytical value differences as great as 40-50 %. In order to quantify these influences, samples of ferromanganese oxide-phosphorite pavement from the Blake Plateau have been subjected to various drying techniques before analysis using X-ray fluorescence.
