Rising levels of CO2 in the atmosphere have led to increased CO2 concentrations in the oceans. This enhanced carbon availability to the marine primary producers has the potential to change their nutrient stoichiometry, and higher carbon to nutrient ratios are expected. As a result, the quality of the primary producers as food for herbivores may change. Here, we present experimental work showing the effect of feeding Rhodomonas salina grown under different pCO2 (200, 400 and 800 µatm) on the copepod Acartia tonsa. The rate of development of copepodites decreased with increasing CO2 availability to the algae. The surplus carbon in the algae was excreted by the copepods, with younger stages (copepodites) excreting most of their surplus carbon through respiration, and adult copepods excreting surplus carbon mostly as DOC. We consider the possible consequences of different excretory pathways for the ecosystem. A continued increase in the CO2 availability for primary production, together with changes in the nutrient loading of coastal ecosystems, may cause changes in the trophic links between primary producers and herbivores.

Basalts collected during drilling and diving programs on Serocki Volcano mostly fall within a limited compositional range, and are moderately evolved, normal MORBs with distinctive high MgO contents (averaging 7.60 wt%) and high A1203 concentrations (averaging 16.14 wt% in whole rock samples). However, samples recovered from within the central crater have lower Ti02 and FeO*/MgO, and higher MgO and Al2O3 concentrations, and are most similar to glasses recovered at Site 649 about 45 km to the north. Comparison of the observed geochemical variations with low-pressure experimental work and other samples from the region suggests that the Serocki Volcano and Site 649 data are compatible with crystal-liquid fractionation involving both olivine and early-stage clinopyroxene, as well as plagioclase, and that the sources may be similar even though Sites 648 and 649 are located in different, but adjacent, spreading cells. Consideration of the stratigraphy and morphology of Serocki Volcano suggests that this feature is more properly described as a megatumulus or lava delta, associated with a steeper, conical peak to the southwest. The evolution of Serocki Volcano involved early construction of a marginal rampart of pillows, followed by doming of this feature and the formation of a perched lava pond. Draining of this pond resulted in collapse and the formation of the central crater.

A general study of biogeochemical processes (DYNAPROC cruise) was conducted in May 1995 at a time-series station in the open northwestern Mediterranean Sea where horizontal advection was weak. Short-term variations of the vertical distributions of pico- and nanophytoplankton were investigated over four 36-h cycles, along with parallel determinations of metabolic CO2 production rates and amino acid-containing colloid (AACC) concentrations at the chlorophyll maximum depth. The vertical (0-1000-m depth) distributions of (i) AACC, (ii) suspended particles and (iii) metabolic CO2 production rate were documented during the initial and final stages of these 36-h cycles. This study was concerned with diel vertical migration (DVM) of zooplankton, which provided periodic perturbations. Accordingly, the time scale of the experimental work varied from a few hours to a few days. Although all distributions exhibited a periodic behaviour, AACC distributions were generally not linked to diel vertical migrations. In the subsurface layer, Synechococcus made the most abundant population and large variations in concentration were observed both at day and at night. The corresponding integrated (over the upper 90 m) losses of Synechococcus during one night pointed to a potential source of exported organic matter amounting to 534 mg C/m**2. This study stresses the potential importance of organic matter export from the euphotic zone through the daily grazing activity of vertically migrating organisms, which would not be accounted for by measurements at longer time scales. The metabolic CO2 production exhibited a peak of activity below 500 m that was shifted downward, apparently in a recurrent way and independently of the vertical distributions of AACC or of suspended particulate material. To account for this phenomenon, a 'sustained wave train» hypothesis is proposed that combines the effect of the diel superficial faecal pellet production by swarming migrators and the repackaging activity of the nonmigrating midwater populations. Our results confirm the recent finding that the particulate compartment is not the major source of the observed instantaneous remineralisation rate and shed a new light on the fate of organic matter in the aphotic zone.

Subtropical oceanic gyres are the most extensive biomes on Earth where SAR11 and Prochlorococcus bacterioplankton numerically dominate the surface waters depleted in inorganic macronutrients as well as in dissolved organic matter. In such nutrient poor conditions bacterioplankton could become photoheterotrophic. We assessed the photoheterotrophy of the key microbial taxa in the North Atlantic oligotrophic gyre and adjacent regions. The experimental work was performed on board the Royal Research Ship James Cook (cruise no. JC53, October-November 2010) as part of the Atlantic Meridional Transect programme, and on board the Royal Research Ship Discovery (cruise no. D369, August-September 2011). At each station, samples were collected from 20m depth with a sampling rosette of 20-l Niskin bottles mounted on aconductivity-temperature-depth profiler. Samples were collected in 1 l thermos flasks (washed with10% v/v HCl) in the dark and processed immediately. Depth of 20m was chosen because it represents the mixed layer and it was the shallowest depth unaffected by the ship's movement, including thrusting, that could artificially affect microbial metabolism in nutrient-depleted stratified surfacewaters. Molecular identification of flow-sorted cells CARD-FISH was performed on flow-sorted cells to identify the groups for which uptake rates were measured. High nucleic acid-containing bacteria, based on SYBR Green DNA staining, that had virtually undetectable chlorophyll autofluorescence, were phylogenetically affiliated with Prochlorococcus,in agreement with our previously reported results (Zubkov et al., 2007; doi:10.1111/j.1462-2920.2007.01324.x).

The work carried out by the physical oceanography group on POLARSTERN Leg ANT-V/3 concentrated on four major topics: A. A large scale survey of the eastern boundary between the Weddell gyre and the open ocean. On the way to the coastal polynya in early October 12 CTD stations were carried out between 54°30'S, 6°E and 70°30'S 8°W. Another set of 16 stations was obtained in early December on the way back north. During this transsect three current meter moorings were recovered at Maud Rise. The path between the current meter arrays was used to run an additional section to the NNE across the top of Maud Rise. B. A large scale survey of the Antarctic Coastal Current along the eastern shelf area. To obtain the water mass characteristics along the eastern Weddell shelf 36 CTD stations were carried out between Atka Bay and the Filchner Trench. Most of the stations were located on the shelf. Cross shelf sections were obtained both near Drescher Inlet and off Halley Bay, in the divergence area of the Coastal Current where the continental slope turns to the west and south of Vestkapp at Neptune's Point. A longshore section over 120 km was run north of Vestkapp. C. A mesoscale survey of the Antarctic Coastal Current off Drescher Inlet. The experimental work consisted of 37 CTD-stations and direct current measurements. The CTD-profiles were grouped into seven sections perpendicular to the coast line off Drescher Inlet extending once over 70 km but normally over 35 km. The profile depth ranged from 300 m on one section to the complete water column at two sections. Most sections consist of five stations providing highest resolution over the upper continental slope with offshore increasing spacing. The stations were chosen to represent the shelf (450 m), the shelf break (800 m), the upper slope (1600 m), the lower slope (2400 m) and the transition to the abyssal plain (3400 m). Rough topography and difficult ice conditions made it impossible to meet those requirements in all cases. D. A small scale survey of the hydrographic conditions under the sea ice. The motivation for these studies arose during the cruise. Consequently a suitable Instrumentation had to be developed at sea. This was done with a NB-Smart CTD which was inserted on an L-shaped lever through a hole in the ice. However, various water intrusions into the instrument resulted in the failure of this technique. In consequence a special lever system was built to position a NB Mark 3b weighing about 40 kg below the ice. Twenty four profiles were obtained reaching from the bottom of the ice down to 2 m below the ice surface with a maximum distance of 1 m from the entry hole. As the conductivity sensor was influenced by nearby ice platelets, salinity samples where drawn to check the sensor.

Harmful algal blooms are mainly caused by marine dinoflagellates and are known to produce potent toxins that may affect the ecosystem, human activities and health. Such events have increased in frequency and intensity worldwide in the past decades. Numerous processes involved in Global Change are amplified in the Arctic, but little is known about species specific responses of arctic dinoflagellates. The aim of this work was to perform an exhaustive morphological, phylogenetical and toxinological characterization of Greenland Protoceratium reticulatum and, in addition, to test the effect of temperature on growth and production of bioactive secondary metabolites. Seven clonal isolates, the first isolates of P. reticulatum available from arctic waters, were phylogenetically characterized by analysis of the LSU rDNA. Six isolates were further characterized morphologically and were shown to produce both yessotoxins (YTX) and lytic compounds, representing the first report of allelochemical activity in P. reticulatum. As shown for one of the isolates, growth was strongly affected by temperature with a maximum growth rate at 15 °C, a significant but slow growth at 1 °C, and cell death at 25 °C, suggesting an adaptation of P. reticulatum to temperate waters. Temperature had no major effect on total YTX cell quota or lytic activity but both were affected by the growth phase with a significant increase at stationary phase. A comparison of six isolates at a fixed temperature of 10 °C showed high intraspecific variability for all three physiological parameters tested. Growth rate varied from 0.06 to 0.19 per day, and total YTX concentration ranged from 0.3 to 15.0 pg YTX/cell and from 0.5 to 31.0 pg YTX/cell at exponential and stationary phase, respectively. All six isolates performed lytic activity; however, for two isolates lytic activity was only detectable at higher cell densities in stationary phase.

Coastal ocean acidification is expected to interfere with the physiology of marine bivalves. In this work, the effects of acidification on the physiology of juvenile mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis were tested by means of controlled CO2 perturbation experiments. The carbonate chemistry of natural (control) seawater was manipulated by injecting CO2 to attain 2 reduced pH levels: -0.3 and -0.6 pH units as compared with the control seawater. After 78 d of exposure, we found that the absorption efficiency and ammonium excretion rate of juveniles were inversely related to pH. Significant differences among treatments were not observed in clearance, ingestion and respiration rates. Coherently, the maximal scope for growth and tissue dry weight were observed in mussels exposed to the pH reduction delta pH=-0.6, suggesting that M. galloprovincialis could be tolerant to CO2 acidification, at least in the highly alkaline coastal waters of Ria Formosa (SW Portugal).

The presented thesis was written in the frame of a project called 'seepage water prognosis'. It was funded by the Federal Ministry for Education and Science (BMBF). 41 German institutions among them research institutes of universities, public authorities and engineering companies were financed for three years respectively. The aim was to work out the scientific basis that is needed to carry out a seepage water prognosis (Oberacker und Eberle, 2002). According to the Federal German Soil Protection Act (Federal Bulletin, 1998) a seepage water prognosis is required in order to avoid future soil impacts from the application of recycling products. The participants focused on the development of either methods to determine the source strength of the materials investigated, which is defined as the total mass flow caused by natural leaching or on models to predict the contaminants transport through the underlying soil. Annual meetings of all participants as well as separate meetings of the two subprojects were held. The department of Geosciences in Bremen participated with two subprojects. The aim of the subproject that resulted in this thesis was the development of easily applicable, valid, and generally accepted laboratory methods for the determination of the source strength. In the scope of the second subproject my colleague Veith Becker developed a computer model for the transport prognosis with the source strength as the main input parameter.

Invasive species allow an investigation of trait retention and adaptations after exposure to new habitats. Recent work on corals from the Gulf of Aqaba (GoA) shows that tolerance to high temperature persists thousands of years after invasion, without any apparent adaptive advantage. Here we test whether thermal tolerance retention also occurs in another symbiont-bearing calcifying organism. To this end, we investigate the thermal tolerance of the benthic foraminifera Amphistegina lobifera from the GoA (29° 30.14167 N 34° 55.085 E) and compare it to a recent "Lessepsian invader population" from the Eastern Mediterranean (EaM) (32° 37.386 N, 34°55.169 E). We first established that the studied populations are genetically homogenous but distinct from a population in Australia, and that they contain a similar consortium of diatom symbionts, confirming their recent common descent. Thereafter, we exposed specimens from GoA and EaM to elevated temperatures for three weeks and monitored survivorship, growth rates and photophysiology. Both populations exhibited a similar pattern of temperature tolerance. A consistent reduction of photosynthetic dark yields was observed at 34°C and reduced growth was observed at 32°C. The apparent tolerance to sustained exposure to high temperature cannot have a direct adaptive importance, as peak summer temperatures in both locations remain <32°C. Instead, it seems that in the studied foraminifera tolerance to high temperature is a conservative trait and the EaM population retained this trait since its recent invasion. Such pre-adaptation to higher temperatures confers A. lobifera a clear adaptive advantage in shallow and episodically high temperature environments in the Mediterranean under further warming.
