Thirty-four sediment and mudline temperatures were collected from six drill holes on ODP Leg 110 near the toe of the Barbados accretionary complex. When combined with thermal conductivity measurements these data delineate the complicated thermal structure on the edge of this convergent margin. Surface heat-flow values from Leg 110 (calculated from geothermal gradients forced through the bottom-water temperature at mudline) of 92 to 192 mW/m**2 are 80% to 300% higher than values predicted by standard heat flow vs. age models for oceanic crust, but are compatible with earlier surface measurements made at the same latitude. Measured heat flow tends to decrease downhole at four sites, suggesting the presence of heat sources within the sediments. These results are consistent with the flow of warm fluid through the complex along sub-horizontal, high-permeability conduits, including thrust faults, the major decollement zone, and sandy intervals. Simple calculations suggest that this flow is transient, occurring on time scales of tens to tens of thousands of years. High heat flow in the vicinity of 15°30'N and not elsewhere along the deformation front suggests that the Leg 110 drill sites may be situated over a fluid discharge zone, with dewatering more active here than elsewhere along the accretionary complex.

Three complementary imaging techniques were used to describe a complex rosette-shaped microboring that penetrates the shells of brachiopods from the Ordovician–Silurian shallow marine limestones of Anticosti Island, Canada. Pyrodendrina cupra n. igen. and isp. is among the oldest dendrinid microborings and consists of shallow and deep penetrating canals that radiate from a central polygonal chamber. The affinity of the tracemaker is unknown, but a foraminiferal origin, as proposed for some dendrinid borings, is rejected. Combining microCT with traditional stereomicroscopy and SEM helped distinguish and quantify fine morphological features while maintaining contextual information of the microboring within the shell substrate. Different imaging techniques inherently bias the description of microborings. These biases must be accounted for as new methods in ichnotaxonomy are integrated with past research based on different methods.

Ocean acidification, the result of increased dissolution of carbon dioxide (CO2) in seawater, is a leading subject of current research. The effects of acidification on non-calcifying macroalgae are, however, still unclear. The current study reports two 1-month studies using two different macroalgae, the red alga Palmaria palmata (Rhodophyta) and the kelp Saccharina latissima (Phaeophyta), exposed to control (pHNBS = 8.04) and increased (pHNBS = 7.82) levels of CO2-induced seawater acidification. The impacts of both increased acidification and time of exposure on net primary production (NPP), respiration (R), dimethylsulphoniopropionate (DMSP) concentrations, and algal growth have been assessed. In P. palmata, although NPP significantly increased during the testing period, it significantly decreased with acidification, whereas R showed a significant decrease with acidification only. S. latissima significantly increased NPP with acidification but not with time, and significantly increased R with both acidification and time, suggesting a concomitant increase in gross primary production. The DMSP concentrations of both species remained unchanged by either acidification or through time during the experimental period. In contrast, algal growth differed markedly between the two experiments, in that P. palmata showed very little growth throughout the experiment, while S. latissima showed substantial growth during the course of the study, with the latter showing a significant difference between the acidified and control treatments. These two experiments suggest that the study species used here were resistant to a short-term exposure to ocean acidification, with some of the differences seen between species possibly linked to different nutrient concentrations between the experiments.
