During the summer of 2003, a ground-penetrating radar survey around the North Greenland Icecore Project (NorthGRIP) deep ice-core drilling site (75°06' N, 42°20' W; 2957 m a.s.l.) was carried out using a shielded 250 MHz radar system. The drill site is located on an ice divide, roughly 300 km north-northwest of the summit of the Greenland ice sheet. More than 430 km of profiles were measured, covering a 10 km by 10 km area, with a grid centered on the drilling location, and eight profiles extending beyond this grid. Seven internal horizons within the upper 120 m of the ice sheet were continuously tracked, containing the last 400 years of accumulation history. Based on the age-depth and density-depth distribution of the deep core, the internal layers have been dated and the regional and temporal distribution of accumulation rate in the vicinity of NorthGRIP has been derived. The distribution of accumulation shows a relatively smoothly increasing trend from east to west from 145 kg/m**2/a to 200 kg/m**2/a over a distance of 50 km across the ice divide. The general trend is overlain by small-scale variations on the order of 2.5 kg/m**2/a/km, i.e. around 1.5% of the accumulation mean. The temporal variations of the seven periods defined by the seven tracked isochrones are on the order of +-4% of the mean of the last 400 years, i.e. at NorthGRIP ±7 kg/m**2/a. If the regional accumulation pattern has been stable for the last several thousand years during the Holocene, and ice flow has been comparable to today, advective effects along the particle trajectory upstream of NorthGRIP do not have a significant effect on the interpretation of climatically induced changes in accumulation rates derived from the deep ice core over the last 10 kyr.

Knowledge of the long-term history of the perennial ice is an important issue that has eluded study because the Cenozoic core material needed has been unavailable until the recent Arctic Coring Expedition (ACEX). Detrital Fe oxide mineral grains analyzed by microprobe from the last 14 Ma (164 m) of the ACEX composite core on the Lomonosov Ridge were matched to circum-Arctic sources with the same mineral and 12-element composition. These precise source determinations and estimates of drift rates were used to determine that these sand grains could not be rafted to the ACEX core site in less than a year. Thus the perennial ice cover has existed since 14 Ma except for the unlikely rapid return to seasonal ice between the average sampling interval of about 0.17 Ma. Both North America and Russia contributed significant Fe grains to the ACEX core during the last 14 Ma.

Determination of when and where animals feed and how much they consume is fundamental to understand their ecology and role in ecosystems. However, the lack of reliable data on feeding habits of wild animals, and particularly in marine endotherms, attests to the difficulty in doing this. A promising recent development proposes using a Hall sensor-magnet System - the inter-mandibular angle sensor (IMASEN) attached to animals' jaws to elucidate feeding events. We conducted trials on captive pinnipeds by feeding IMASEN-equipped animals with prey to examine the utility of this system. Most feeding events were clearly distinguishable from other jaw movements; only small prey items might not be resolved adequately. Based on the results of this study we examined feeding events from free-ranging Weddell seals fitted with IMASENs and dead-reckoners during December 2003 at Drescher Inlet (Riiser Larsen Ice Shelf, eastern Weddell Sea coast), and present data on prey capture and ingestion in relation to the three-dimensionalmovement patterns of the seals. A total of 19 Weddell seals were immobilised by using a combination of ketamine, xylazine, and diazepam. Eight seals were drugged once, six two times, and two and three were drugged three and four times each, coming to a total of 38 immobilisation procedures. Adult male and female Weddell seals (Leptonychotes weddellii) were fitted with Time-depth recorders (TDR) at Drescher Inlet (Riiser Larsen Ice Shelf), eastern Weddell Sea coast, in February 1998. Eight of 15 data sets were selected for analyses to investigate the seals' foraging behaviour (doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.511465, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.511454, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.511456, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.511457, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.511459, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.511462, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.511466, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.511467). These data sets provided simultaneous dive records of eight seals over eight days. The seals primarily foraged within two depth layers, these being from the sea surface to 160 m where temperature and salinity varied considerably, and from 340 to 450 m near the bottom where temperature was lowest and salinity highest, with little variation. While pelagic and benthic diving occurred during daylight, the seals foraged almost exclusively in the upper water column at night. Trawling during daytime confirmed that Pleuragramma antarcticum were by far the most abundant fish both in the pelagial and close to the bottom. Pelagic night-hauls at 110-170 m depth showed highly variable biomass of P. antarcticum with a peak at around midnight. The temporal changes in the local abundance of P. antarcticum, particularly in the pelagial, may explain the trends in the seals' pelagic and benthic foraging activities. This is the first study which describes the jaw movements of a hunting seal which are presumably indicative of feeding events. Trophic links from the Weddell seal to fish, zooplankton and krill, Euphausia superba, are discussed. Mud accumulates on continental shelves under a variety of environmental conditions and results in a diverse formation of mud depocenters (MDCs). Their three-dimensional architectures have been in the focus of several recent studies. Due to some terminological confusion concerning MDCs, the present study sets out to define eight individual MDC types in terms of surface sediment distribution and internal geometry. Under conditions of substantial sediment supply, prodeltas (distal zones off river deltas; triangular sheets), subaqueous deltas (disconnected from deltas by strong normal-to-shore currents; wedge-like clinoforms), and mud patches (scattered distribution) and mud blankets (widespread covers) are formed. Forced by hydrodynamic conditions, mud belts in the strict sense (detached from source; elongated bodies), and shallow-water contourite drifts (detached from source; growing normal to prevailing current direction; triangular clinoforms) develop. Controlled by local morphology, mud entrapments (in depressions, behind morphological steps) and mud wedges (triangular clinoforms growing in flow direction) are deposited. Shelf mud deposition took place (1) during early outer-shelf drowning (~14 ka), (2) after inner-shelf inundation to maximum flooding (9.5-6.5 ka), and (3) in sub-recent times (<2 ka). Subsequent expansion may be (1) concentric, in cases where the depocenter formed near the fluvial source, (2) uni-directional, extending along advective current transport paths, and (3) progradational, forming clinoforms that grow either parallel or normal to the bottom current direction. Classical mud belts may be initiated around defined nuclei, the remote sites of which are determined by seafloor morphology rather than the location of the source. From a stratigraphic perspective, mud depocenters coincide with sea-level highstand-related, shelf-wide condensed sections. They often show a conformable succession from transgressive to highstand systems tract stages.

For Middle Jurassic to Pleistocene times, clay mineralogical and geochemical data provide information on the evolution of continental and marine paleoenvironments. They are a source of information on marginal instability, on the continental and shallow marine environments related to the development of the Southern Ocean during the Middle and Late Jurassic, and on tectonic relaxation of the continental margins at the end of the Late Jurassic. They also provide evidence for the influences of the South Atlantic opening and the movement of the Falkland Plateau in a reduced marine environment until Aptian-Albian times, and the transition to an open marine environment during Albian time; the influences of the Albian-Turonian and Coniacian-Santonian Andean deformations in an open marine environment; the limited tectonic effects and strong influence of marine currents at the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary; the influences of the global climatic cooling and inferred bottom water circulation during the late Eocene and Oligocene; the widening of the South Atlantic Ocean during Oligocene time, which was accompanied by an increased influence of the biogenic components on sedimentation; increased carbonate dissolution from late Oligocene to early Miocene, related to the deepening of the ocean; limited mineralogical and important geochemical modifications when the Drake Passage opened in the early Miocene; the influence of the late Miocene development of the Antarctic ice-sheet; the major Antarctic cooling and Patagonian glaciation during Pliocene time; and the change in the Antarctic Bottom Water circulation at the Pliocene/Pleistocene boundary.

Authigenic ferromanganese manifestations in bottom sediments from two horizons (0-10 and 240-250 cm) located in the low/high bioproductive transitional zone of the Pacific Ocean were studied. In addition two compositionally different types of micronodules, crusts and ferromanganese nodules were detected in the surface horizon (0-1 cm). Three size fractions (50-100, 100-250, and 250-500 µm) of manganese micronodules were investigated. In terms of surface morphology, color, and shape, the micronodules are divided into dull round (MN1) and angular lustrous (MN2) varieties with different mineral and chemical compositions. MN1 are enriched in Mn and depleted in Fe as compared with MN2. Mn/Fe ratio in MN1 varies from 13 to 14. Asbolane-buserite and birnessite are the major manganese minerals in them. MN2 is mainly composed of vernadite with Mn/Fe ratio from 4.3 to 4.8. Relative to MN1, fraction 50-100 µm of MN2 is enriched in Fe (2.6 times), W (1.8), Mo (3.2), Th (2.3), Ce (5.8), and REE (from 1.2 to 1.8). Relative to counterparts from MN1, separate fractions of MN2 are characterized by greater compositional difference. For example, increase in size of micronodules leads to decrease in contents of Fe (by 10 rel. %), Ce (2 times), W (2.1 times), Mo (2.2 times), and Co (1.5 times). At the same time one can see increase in contents of other elements: Th and Cu (2.1 times), Ni (1.9 times), and REE (from 1.2 to 1.6 times). Differences in chemical and mineral compositions of MN1 and MN2 fractions can be related to alternation of oxidative and suboxidative conditions in the sediments owing to input of labile organic matter, which acts as the major reducer, and allochthonous genesis of MN2.

The climate during the Cenozoic era changed in several steps from ice-free poles and warm conditions to ice-covered poles and cold conditions. Since the 1950s, a body of information on ice volume and temperature changes has been built up predominantly on the basis of measurements of the oxygen isotopic composition of shells of benthic foraminifera collected from marine sediment cores. The statistical methodology of time series analysis has also evolved, allowing more information to be extracted from these records. Here we provide a comprehensive view of Cenozoic climate evolution by means of a coherent and systematic application of time series analytical tools to each record from a compilation spanning the interval from 4 to 61 Myr ago. We quantitatively describe several prominent features of the oxygen isotope record, taking into account the various sources of uncertainty (including measurement, proxy noise, and dating errors). The estimated transition times and amplitudes allow us to assess causal climatological-tectonic influences on the following known features of the Cenozoic oxygen isotopic record: Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum, Eocene-Oligocene Transition, Oligocene-Miocene Boundary, and the Middle Miocene Climate Optimum. We further describe and causally interpret the following features: Paleocene-Eocene warming trend, the two-step, long-term Eocene cooling, and the changes within the most recent interval (Miocene-Pliocene). We review the scope and methods of constructing Cenozoic stacks of benthic oxygen isotope records and present two new latitudinal stacks, which capture besides global ice volume also bottom water temperatures at low (less than 30°) and high latitudes. This review concludes with an identification of future directions for data collection, statistical method development, and climate modeling.

Understanding the distribution and foraging ecology of major consumers within pelagic systems, specifically in relation to physical parameters, can be important for the management of bentho-pelagic systems undergoing rapid change associated with global climate change and other anthropogenic disturbances such as fishing (i.e., the Antarctic Peninsula and Scotia Sea). We tracked 11 adult male southern elephant seals (Mirounga leonina), during their five-month post-moult foraging migrations from King George Island (Isla 25 de Mayo), northern Antarctic Peninsula, using tags capable of recording and transmitting behavioural data and in situ temperature and salinity data. Seals foraged mostly within the Weddell-Scotia Confluence, while a few foraged along the western Antarctic Peninsula shelf of the Bellingshausen Sea. Mixed model outputs suggest that the at-sea behaviour of seals was associated with a number of environmental parameters, especially seafloor depth, sea-ice concentrations and the temperature structure of the water column. Seals increased dive bottom times and travelled at slower speeds in shallower areas and areas with increased sea-ice concentrations. Changes in dive depth and durations, as well as relative amount of time spent during the bottom phases of dives, were observed in relation to differences in overall temperature gradient, likely as a response to vertical changes in prey distribution associated with temperature stratification in the water column. Our results illustrate the likely complex influences of bathymetry, hydrography and sea ice on the behaviour of male southern elephant seals in a changing environment and highlight the need for region-specific approaches to studying environmental influences on behaviour.

The modern depositional environment of the deep Norwegian-Greenland Sea is highly asymmetric in an E-W direction because of the hydrography of the surface water masses and because of the more or less permanent pack ice cover of the East Greenland Current regime along the Greenland continental margin. By means of sedimentation rates we have tried to investigate whether this hydrographic asymmetry influenced the sediment input to the Norwegian-Greenland Sea over the past 60 m.y. Sediment input can be quantified if thicknesses of sediment sections accumulated over known time intervals can be measured and if some of their physical properties have been determined. Sedimentation rates have been estimated for Tertiary and Quaternary times, and their temporal as well as their spatial changes are discussed. Basin structure and morphology exerted an important influence on sediment distribution. During the Early Tertiary major sediment source regions in the southern Barents Sea and to the north and west of Iceland could be identified; these source regions supplied the bulk of the sediment fill of the Norwegian-Greenland Sea. Since inception of a "glacial" type sedimentation major elements of the sea surface circulation seem to have controlled the sediment input into this polar and subpolar deep-sea basin.

From a 10.7 m long gravity core from the Sierra Leone Rise (5°39.5' N, 19°51' W) a detailed oxygen and carbon isotope record of both planktonic and benthonic foraminifera species was obtained extending from the Recent to Jaramillo event. The analysis yielded six major results. 1. Benthos oxygen isotopes varied by 1.8-2.2 per mil from interglacial to glacial times and may indicate a synglacial cooling of North Atlantic Deep Water at 2800 m depth by 1-3°C. 2. Variable anomalies between the benthos and plankton d18O record indicate a cooling of sea-surface temperatures (SST) by up to 6 °C during some glacial stages. 3. Southerly trade winds and equatorial upwelling may excert the primary control off SST variations, in particular of extremee values of cold and warm stages and of the abrupt character of climate transitions and their leads and lags, and finally, of variable sedimentation rates. 4. The benthos d13C record correlates well with the flux and preservation of organic matter. 5. A new time scale, CARPOR, was established from the assumption that terrigenous sediment supply was ± constant bit CaCO3 varied considerably. When applied to the d18O record, three major and numerous short-term variations of sedimentation rates (0.8 to 4.0 cm/kyr) can be distinguished. 6. The climatic record was modified by bioturbation much more strongly during cold than during warm stages.

Distributions of free and bound n-alkanes, n-alkanoic acids, and n-alkanols were determined in order to compare the character of organic matter contained in organic-carbon-rich sediments from two sites sampled by the hydraulic piston corer. Two diatomaceous debris-flow samples of Pleistocene age were obtained from Hole 530B in the Angola Basin. A sample of bioturbated Pleistocene diatomaceous clay and another of bioturbated late Miocene nannofossil clay were collected from Hole 532 on the Walvis Ridge. Geolipid distributions of all samples contain large terrigenous contributions and lesser amounts of marine components. Similarities in organic matter contents of Hole 530B and Hole 532 sediments suggest that a common depositional setting, probably on the Walvis Ridge, was the original source of these sediments through Quaternary, and possibly late Neogene, times and that downslope relocation of these biogenic deposits has frequently occurred.

At the Peruvian convergent margin, two distinct pore fluid regimes are recognized from differences in their Cl- concentrations. The slope pore fluids are characterized by low Cl- concentrations, but elevated Br- and I- concentrations due to biogenic production. The shelf pore fluids exhibit elevated Cl- and Br- concentrations due to diffusive mixing with an evaporitic brine. In the slope pore fluids, the Br-, I-, and NH4+ concentrations are elevated following bacterial decomposition of organic matter, but the I- concentrations are in excess of those expected based on mass balance calculations using NH4+ and Br- concentrations. The slope sediment organic matter, which is enriched in iodine from oxidationreduction processes at the oxygenated sediment-water interface, is responsible for this enrichment. The increases in dissolved I- and the I- enrichments relative to NH4+ and Br- correlate well with sedimentation rates because of differential trapping following regeneration. The pore-fluid I-/Br- ratios suggest that membrane ion fiitration is not a major cause of the decreases in Cl- concentrations. Other possible sources for low Cl- water, including meteoric water, clathrate dissociation, and/or mineral dehydration reactions, imply that the diluting component of the slope low-Cl- fluids has flowed at least 1 km through the sediment. The low bottom-water oxygenation in the shelf is responsible for the low (if any) enrichment of iodine in the shelf sediments. Fluctuations in bottom-water oxygen concentrations in the past, however, may be responsible for the observed variations in the sediment I/Br ratios. Comparison of Na+/Cl- and Br-/Cl- molar ratios in the pore fluids shows that the shelf high-Cl- fluid formed from mixing with a brine that formed from seawater concentrated by twelve to nineteen times and probably was modified by halite dissolution. This dense brine, located below the sediment sections drilled, appears to have flowed a distance >500 km through the sediment.
