Data on concentrations of the major ions (Cl, SO4, Alk, Na, K, Ca, Mg, NH4) in interstitial waters from sediments of three brine-bearing deeps of the Red Sea rift zone are reported. Interstitial waters of the Atlantis-II Deep have the highest salinity (310.1 g/l), of the Discovery Deep - slightly lower (298.8 g/l), and of the Suakin Deep - the lowest (159.9 g/l). Interstitial waters of all three deeps are characterized by low, compared with sea water, absolute and relative concentrations of Mg and SO4 ions and have extremely low alkaline reserve (0.15-0.64 meq/l). Concentrations of K, Ca and especially Na and Cl ions, as compared with sea water, are highly increased. Interstitial waters from the deeps in study have high, compared with sea water, concentrations of NH4 (12-62 mg/l).

Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 114 recovered nannofossil-bearing sediments from seven sites in the high latitudes of the South Atlantic Ocean. Cretaceous sections were recovered from Sites 698 and 700, located on the Northeast Georgia Rise and its lower flanks, respectively. These contain distinctive high-latitude nannofossil floras similar to those from high-latitude areas of the Northern Hemisphere. Most of the biostratigraphic datums used to date the upper Campanian to Maestrichtian interval appear to lie at approximately the same level in both hemispheres. The FAD of Nephrolithus frequens is confirmed to be diachronous with an earlier occurrence in high latitudes. The LAD of Monomarginatus primus n. sp. also appears to be diachronous with a later LAD in the high latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere. Fossiliferous Paleocene to lowermost Miocene sediments were recovered at all seven sites, from the Northeast Georgia Rise in the west to the Meteor Rise in the east. These nannofossil floras, although restricted in diversity and only poorly preserved, are sufficiently distinctive to allow the recognition of 19 zones and three subzones, which are used to date and correlate the cores recovered. Only Site 704 on the Meteor Rise yielded a substantial section of Miocene to Quaternary nannofossil-rich sediments. The nannofossil floras of this section are of very low diversity, with usually fewer than eight species present. Some stratigraphic ranges of important biostratigraphic datum species are observed to be different in the high-latitude sections from those recorded from low-latitude areas. The LAD of Reticulofenestra bisecta, when calibrated by magnetostratigraphy, appears to occur earlier in Hole 699A (within Chron C6CR) than in Hole 703A and possibly Hole 704B and in other published accounts of lower latitude sites in the South Atlantic. The FAD of Nannotetrina fulgens/N. cristata appears to occur later in Hole 702B (Chron C20R) than it does in other published accounts of lower latitude sites in the South Atlantic. Diachroneity is also suspected in the stratigraphic ranges of Chiasmolithus solitus and Chiasmolithus oamaruensis, although poor magnetostratigraphic results through the critical interval prevent confirmation of this. Differences in the relative stratigraphic ranges of lsthmolithus recurvus and Cribrocentrum coenurumlC. reticulatum at Sites 699 and 703 are noted. These possibly suggest warmer surface waters on the eastern side (Site 703) of the middle to late Eocene South Atlantic than those on the western side (Site 699). The diversities of the nannofossil floras and the presence of the warm-water genera Discoaster, Sphenolithus, Helicosphaera, and Amaurolithus reflect the changing surface water temperatures throughout the Cenozoic. Warmer periods are inferred for the late Paleocene to early middle Eocene, late middle Eocene to late Eocene, latest Oligocene to earliest Miocene, and possibly the Pliocene. Colder periods are inferred for the middle Eocene, most of the Oligocene, and the Miocene. Dramatic changes in the nannofossil floras of the Pleistocene of Site 704 are thought to reflect a rapidly changing environment. Monomarginatus primus, a new species from the Upper Cretaceous strata of Hole 700B, is described.

We present sediment magnetic and chemical analysis of cyclic ocean sediments of the upwelling region of the Lower Congo Basin (equatorial Atlantic). We investigated two >100-k.y. intervals from Ocean Drilling Program Site 1075 to analyze the hysteresis properties, sources of magnetic susceptibility, anhysteretic remanent magnetizations, thermomagnetic behavior, and element concentrations of Fe, Ca, Ti, Mn, and K using an X-ray fluorescence (XRF) core scanner. The upper interval was sampled between 14 and 32 meters composite depth (mcd; 0.09-0.21 Ma) and the lower between 141 and 163 mcd (1.31-1.54 Ma) at a resolution of 20 cm, which represents a temporal resolution of 2.0 and 1.3 k.y., respectively. XRF core-scanner data were acquired at 5-cm intervals. The measurements show that ferri(o)magnetic minerals have no significant influence on the cyclicity of the magnetic susceptibility, which is dominated by paramagnetic and diamagnetic minerals and reflects changes of sediment input from the Congo River. The Fe, Ti, K, and Mn concentrations covary with the magnetic susceptibility where high concentrations of these elements correlate with intervals of high susceptibility and low concentrations with intervals of low susceptibility. The Ca counts correlate well with the calcium carbonate concentration but do not show the same cyclicity as the other elements or the susceptibility. With the exception of the Ca concentration, which is significantly higher in the upper interval, and the magnetic grain size, which indicates that less fine grained magnetite is present in the lower interval, no significant differences in the properties of the upper and the lower intervals were detected.

Hydrocarbons, sterols and alkenones were analyzed in samples collected from a 10 month sediment trap time series deployed in the Indian Ocean sector of the Southern Ocean. Fluxes and within-class distributions varied seasonally. During higher mass and organic carbon (OC) flux periods, which occurred in austral summer and fall, fresh marine inputs were predominant. Vertical fluxes were most intense in January, but limited to one week in duration. They were, however, low compared with other oceanic regions. In contrast, low mass and OC flux periods were characterized by a strong unresolved complex mixture (UCM) in the hydrocarbon fraction and a high proportion of stanols as a result of zooplanktonic grazing. Terrigenous inputs were not detectable. The alkenone compositions were consistent with previous data on suspended particles from Antarctic waters. However, UK'37 values diverged from the linear and exponential fits established by Sikes et al. (1997, doi:10.1016/S0016-7037(97)00017-3) in the low temperature range. The seasonal pattern of alkenone production implied that IPT (integrated production temperature) is likely to be strongly imprinted by austral summer and fall SST (sea surface temperature).

Site 1256 of Ocean Drilling Program Leg 206 to the Guatemala Basin on the eastern flank of the East Pacific Rise yielded a near-complete, middle Miocene-Quaternary carbonate-rich section that provides an opportunity to study low-latitude biostratigraphic and paleoceanographic events. The sedimentary sequence in Hole 1256B has been zoned using calcareous nannofossils according to the biostratigraphic schemes by Martini of 1971 (modified by Martini and Müller in 1986) and Okada and Bukry of 1980. The nannofossil assemblage is characteristic of the low latitudes, with abundant Gephyrocapsa, Discoaster, and Sphenolithus, and is in general moderately to well preserved, depending on nannofossil abundance and the presence of diatoms. Age estimates for the first occurrence and last occurrence of Reticulofenestra rotaria were derived from biostratigraphy and magnetostratigraphy independently and assigned to 7.18 and 6.32 Ma, respectively. Linear sedimentation rates, calculated using 28 nannofossil datums and age estimates, are high in the middle Miocene, decrease from the late Miocene to the Pliocene, then increase upsection. The abrupt drop in carbonate mass accumulation rates during the early late Miocene is referred to as the "carbonate crash." This pattern reflects (1) the long-trend decrease of productivity as the site moves away from the upwelling system at the equatorial divergence as well as (2) fluctuation in the chemistry of the bottom waters associated with production of the North Atlantic Bottom Water and ventilation via the Panama Gateway. A basement age of 14.5 Ma was obtained by extrapolating the 39.1-m/m.y. rate in the middle Miocene to the basement at 250.7 meters below seafloor, and is consistent with the ~15-Ma age of the oceanic crust estimated from marine magnetic anomalies. Reworked nannofossils and lithologic changes were used to unravel postdepositional history, and three episodes were recognized, one of which in the latest Miocene can be widely correlated.

To reveal changes in the oceanic environment on the continental slope adjacent to the Great Barrier Reef, east of Cairns (NE Australia), planktonic and benthic foraminiferal abundances were counted and planktonic percentages (P/B ratios) were determined in sediments from two sites. Counts of planktonic and benthic specimens per gram of sediment over the last glacial/interglacial cycle at the shallowest Site 821, located in a water depth of 212 m just below the core of Subtropical Lower Water, show high abundances in the last glacial compared with the Holocene interglacial. We interpret the apparent increase in abundances during the last glacial as mainly a consequence of fluctuations in the intensity of flow of Subtropical Lower Water along the outer shelf edge and upper slope. During the lowstand in sea level, the increased flow winnowed the sediments, concentrating the foraminiferal skeletons. The P/B ratios are low throughout, with the highest values occurring during the Holocene interglacial and glacial stage 2. This suggests that some upwelling might have occurred during glacial stage 2. The relatively deeper water Site 819 is located in 565.2 m of water in a zone of mixing between Subtropical Lower Water and Antarctic Intermediate Water. The studied record at this site represents middle to upper Quaternary sediments, but it was interrupted by a hiatus just above stage 15 (Alexander et al., this volume); stages 7 through 13 are missing. Below the hiatus (isotopic stages 15 through 21), the foraminiferal abundances are low, while above the hiatus, the highest abundances occur in isotopic stage 6. In addition, a major change in the P/B ratio occurs across the unconformity. Below the hiatus, the ratios are low and resemble the values of the top of Site 821; but above it, ratios rapidly fluctuate, with a tendency for high values during glacial periods. We interpret the changes across the hiatus as having been caused by a shift in the position of the mixing zone between subsurface Subtropical Lower Water and Antarctic Intermediate Water. The mixing zone of these watermasses was farther down the slope in isotopic stages 15 through 21. This is indicated by the low P/B ratios, similar to the values found in the top of Site 821, which presently is bathed in subtropical waters. Above the hiatus, the influence of Antarctic Intermediate Water increased, as inferred from the high P/B ratios.

Ocean Drilling Program Leg 125 recovered serpentined harzburgites and dunites from a total of jive sites on the crests and flanks of two serpen finite seamounts, Conical Seamount in the Mariana forearc and Torishima Forearc Seamount in the Izu-Bonin forearc. These are some of the first extant forearc peridotites reported in the literature and they provide a window into oceanic, supra-subduction zone (SSZ) mantle processes. Harzbutrgites from both seamounts are very refractory with low modal clinopyroxene (<4%), chrome-rich spinels (cx-number = 0.40-0.80), very low incompatible element contents, and (with the exception of amphibole-bearing samples) U-shaped rare earth element (REE) profiles with positive Eu anomalies. Both sets of peridotites have olivine-spinel equilibration temperatures that are low compared with abyssal peridotites, possibly because of water-assisted diffusional equilibration in the SSZ environment However, other features indicate that the harzburgites from the two seamounts have very different origins. Harzburgites from Conical Seamount are characterized by calculated oxygen fugacities between FMQ (fayalite- magnetite- quartz) - 1.1 (log units) and FMQ + 0.4 which overlap those of mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) peridotites. Dunites from Conical Seamotmt contain small amounts of clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene and amphibole and are light REE (LREE) enriched. Moreover; they are considerably more oxidized than the harzburgites to which they are spatially related, with calculated oxygen fugacities of FMQ -0.2 toFMQ + 1.2. Using textural and geochemical evidence, we interpret these harzburgites as residual MORB mantle (from 15 to 20 % fractional melting) which has subsequently been modified by interaction with boninitic melt ivithin the mantle wedge, and these dunites as zones of focusing of this melt in which pyroxene has preferentially been dissolved from the harzbutgite protolith. In contrast, harzburgites from Torishima Forearc Seamount give calculated oxygen fugacities between FMQ + 0.8 and FMQ + l.6, similar to those calculated for other subduction-zone related peridotites and similar to those calculated for the dunites (FMQ + 1.2 to FMQ + 1.8) from the same seamount. In this case, we interpret both the harzburgites and dunites as linked to mantle melting (20-25 % fractional melting) in a supra-subduction zone environment The results thus indicate that the forearc is underlain by at least two types of mantle lithosphere, one being trapped or accreted oceanic lithosphere, the other being lithosphere formed by subduction-related melting. They also demonstrate that both types of mantle lithosphere may have undergone extensive interaction with subduction-derived magmas.

We investigate the Logatchev Hydrothermal Field at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, 14°45' N to constrain the calcium isotope hydrothermal flux into the ocean. During the transformation of seawater to a hydrothermal solution, the Ca concentration of pristine seawater ([Ca]_SW) increases from about 10 mM to about 32 mM in the hydrothermal fluid endmember ([Ca]_HydEnd) and thereby adopts a d44/40Ca_HydEnd of -0.95+/-0.07 per mil relative to seawater (SW) and a 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratio of 0.7034(4). We demonstrate that d44/40Ca_HydEnd is higher than that of the bedrock at the Logatchev field. From mass balance calculations, we deduce a d44/40Ca of -1.17+/-0.04 per mil (SW) for the host-rocks in the reaction zone and -1.45+/-0.05 per mil (SW) for the isotopic composition of the entire hydrothermal cell of the Logatchev field. The values are isotopically lighter than the currently assumed d44/40Ca for Bulk Earth of -0.92+/-0.18 per mil (SW) [Skulan J., DePaolo D. J. and Owens T. L. (1997) Biological control of calcium isotopic abundances in the global calcium cycle. Geochim. Cosmochim. Acta 61,(12) 2505-2510] and challenge previous assumptions of no Ca isotope fractionation between hydrothermal fluid and the oceanic crust [Zhu P. and Macdougall J. D. (1998) Calcium isotopes in the marine environment and the oceanic calcium cycle. Geochim. Cosmochim. Acta 62,(10) 1691-1698; Schmitt A. -D., Chabeaux F. and Stille P. (2003) The calcium riverine and hydrothermal isotopic fluxes and the oceanic calcium mass balance. Earth Planet. Sci. Lett. 6731, 1-16]. Here we propose that Ca isotope fractionation along the fluid flow pathway of the Logatchev field occurs during the precipitation of anhydrite. Two anhydrite samples from the Logatchev Hydrothermal Field show an average fractionation of about D44/40Ca = -0.5 per mil relative to their assumed parental solutions. Ca isotope ratios in aragonites from carbonate veins from ODP drill cores indicate aragonite precipitation directly from seawater at low temperatures with an average d44/40Ca of -1.54+/-0.08 per mil (SW). The relatively large fractionation between the aragonite precipitates and seawater in combination with their frequent abundance in weathered mafic and ultramafic rocks suggest a reconsideration of the marine Ca isotope budget, in particular with regard to ocean crust alteration.

Ocean acidification is predicted to have significant effects on benthic calcifying invertebrates, in particular on their early developmental stages. Echinoderm larvae could be particularly vulnerable to decreased pH, with major consequences for adult populations. The objective of this study was to understand how ocean acidification would affect the initial life stages of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus, a common species that is widely distributed in the Mediterranean Sea and the NE Atlantic. The effects of decreased pH (elevated PCO2) were investigated through physiological and molecular analyses on both embryonic and larval stages. Eggs and larvae were reared in Mediterranean seawater at six pH levels, i.e. pHT 8.1, 7.9, 7.7, 7.5, 7.25 and 7.0. Fertilization success, survival, growth and calcification rates were monitored over a 3 day period. The expression of genes coding for key proteins involved in development and biomineralization was also monitored. Paracentrotus lividus appears to be extremely resistant to low pH, with no effect on fertilization success or larval survival. Larval growth was slowed when exposed to low pH but with no direct impact on relative larval morphology or calcification down to pHT 7.25. Consequently, at a given time, larvae exposed to low pH were present at a normal but delayed larval stage. More surprisingly, candidate genes involved in development and biomineralization were upregulated by factors of up to 26 at low pH. Our results revealed plasticity at the gene expression level that allows a normal, but delayed, development under low pH conditions.

Recent studies have suggested that the marine contribution of methane from shallow regions and melting marine terminating glaciers may have been underestimated. Here we report on methane sources and potential sinks associated with methane seeps in Cumberland Bay, South Georgia's largest fjord system. The average organic carbon content in the upper 8 meters of the sediment is around 0.65 wt.%; this observation combined with Parasound data suggest that the methane gas accumulations probably originate from peat-bearing sediments currently located several tens of meters below the seafloor. Only one of our cores indicates upward advection; instead most of the methane is transported via diffusion. Sulfate and methane flux estimates indicate that a large fraction of methane is consumed by anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM). Carbon cycling at the sulfate-methane transition (SMT) results in a marked fractionation of the d13C-CH4 from an estimated source value of -65 per mil to a value as low as -96 per mil just below the SMT. Methane concentrations in sediments are high, especially close to the seepage sites (~40 mM); however, concentrations in the water column are relatively low (max. 58 nM) and can be observed only close to the seafloor. Methane is trapped in the lowermost water mass, however, measured microbial oxidation rates reveal very low activity with an average turnover of 3.1 years. We therefore infer that methane must be transported out of the bay in the bottom water layer. A mean sea-air flux of only 0.005 nM/m²/s confirms that almost no methane reaches the atmosphere.
