Measurements of atmospheric radioactivity attached to aerosols are described. Fallout was collected in a vessel of large area. Emphasis was on separation of "wet" and "dry" samples. For strontium 90 a ratio of "wet" to "dry" fallout of 5:1 has been found independent of latitude. The total fallout was smaller than comparable values from continents because of very small amounts of rainfall in the equatorial zone. In order to achieve consistency in the global balance a better knowledge not only of radioactivity but also of precipitation over the ocean is required. Fallout of Ra-D clearly shows the ITC as a barrier for the latitudinal movement of near sea-surface air masses. The concentration of short-lived emanation daughters shows large variations according to varying geographic conditions. A variation with time could not be explained. The specific activity of long-lived radioactive substances shows the expected effect of the ITC as well as a seasonal diminuation of average concentration, similar to that measured at Heidelberg.

Four sites in the region of the Mazagan Plateau off northwest Africa were drilled during Leg 79 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project. Bulk mineralogy and clay mineralogy were analyzed from the Cenozoic sediments recovered from the four sites.

Eighty-four sediment samples from four holes at Site 502 and 54 samples from three holes at Site 503 were analyzed for mineral content by semiquantitative X-ray diffraction methods. Site 502 is located in the Western Caribbean, whereas Site 503 lies in the Eastern Pacific (probably on the north flank of the Galapagos Spreading Center). Both sites were chosen to yield continuous core sections for investigations of late Neogene and Quaternary biostratigraphy and magnetostratigraphy and to study events such as the closing of the Isthmus of Panama. Our X-ray diffraction work should provide a framework for further investigations - for example, determination of climatic changes in relationship to clay mineral composition or the influx of terrigeneous sediment components from South America before and after development of the Panama landbridge.

Sediments recovered by drilling during Legs 58, 59, and 60 in the North and South Philippine Sea have been analyzed by X-ray diffractometry. The CaCO3 content was measured separately. The sites encompass several volcanic ridges and intervening inter-arc basin troughs as well as sites on the Mariana arc fore-arc sediment prism and the Mariana Trench. The sediments at all sites received major volcanogenic input from the various arcs; they tend to be rich in volcanic glass, with associated quartz, feldspar, pyroxenes and amphibole. Carbonate is a major component only at Site 445 at the southern end of the Daito Ridge, and at Site 448 on the Palau-Kyushu Ridge. All other sites were either deep relative to the carbonate compensation depth or had very high non-carbonate sedimentation rates. Clay minerals are mainly smectite and illite with lesser variable proportions of chlorite and kaolinite. Smectite predominates over illite except at sites in the Shikoku Basin and the Daito Ridge, and at one site in the Mariana Trench. At several sites, smectite increases and illite decreases with depth. Principal zeolites are phillipsite and clinoptilolite. Analcime occurs in some samples.

Dynamics of the Pacific Plate is recorded in the systematic variation of location and the 40Ar-39Ar age of seamounts in the Western Pacific from 120 to 65 Ma ago. The seamounts are grouped into three linear zones as long as 5000 km. The seamounts become younger in the southeastern direction along the strike of these zones. Correlation between age and location of seamounts allows to divide the history of their formation into three stages. Rate of seamount growth was relatively low (2-4 cm/yr) during the first and the third stages within intervals of 120-90 and 85-65 Ma, whereas during the second stage (90-85 Ma), the seamounts were growing very fast (80-100 cm/yr). In the midst of this stage, at ~87 Ma ago, magmatic activity increased abruptly. Dynamics of seamount building is in good agreement with (1) pulses in development of the Ontong Java, Manihiki, and Caribbean-Colombian oceanic plateaus; (2) age of spreading acceleration in the mid-Cretaceous; and (3) a short period when the Izanagi Plate ceased to exist and the Kula Plate was formed. Variation in seamounts' age and location are in consistence with the hypothesis of diffuse extension of the Pacific Plate in course of its motion with formation of impaired zones of decompression melting. Direction of extension (325°-340° NW) calculated from the strike of seamount zones is consistent with the path of the Pacific Plate (330° NW) in the Late Cretaceous. Immense perioceanic volcanic belts were formed at that time along the margin of the Asian continent. The Okhotsk-Chukchi Peninsula Belt extends at a right angle to the compression vector. Three stages of this belt's evolution are synchronous with the stages of seamount formation in the Pacific Plate. Delay in origination of the East Sikhote-Alin Volcanic Belt and its different orientation were caused by counterclockwise rotation of the vector of convergence of oceanic and continental plates in the mid-Cretaceous. At the same time, i.e. 95-85 Ma ago, volcanic activity embraced the entire continental margin and tin granites were emplaced everywhere in the Eastern Asia. This short episode (90+/-5 Ma) corresponds to the mid-Cretaceous maximum of compression of the continental margin, and its age fits well a culmination in extension of the Pacific Plate.
