Pollen and stable carbon (d13C) and hydrogen (dD) isotope ratios of terrestrial plant wax from the South Atlantic sediment core, ODP Site 1085, is used to reconstruct Miocene to Pliocene changes of vegetation and rainfall regime of western southern Africa. Our results reveal changes in the relative amount of precipitation and indicate a shift of the main moisture source from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean during the onset of a major aridification 8 Ma ago. We emphasise the importance of declining precipitation during the expansion of C4 and CAM (mainly succulent) vegetation in South Africa. We suggest that the C4 plant expansion resulted from an increased equator-pole temperature gradient caused by the initiation of strong Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation following the shoaling of the Central American Seaway during the Late Miocene.

Color variations were interpreted in paleoceanographic terms for the late Pliocene-Pleistocene sediments recovered by ODP Leg 172 on deep-sea drifts at Blake-Bahama Outer Ridge and northeastern Bermuda Rise. The color-derived parameters used in interpretation included predicted carbonate content, terrigenous fluxes, and hematite content. Abundance of Upper Carboniferous spores indicates that the hematite is probably derived from the Permo-Carboniferous red beds of the Canadian Maritimes. In the last 800 kyr sedimentation pattern changes on the Blake-Bahama Outer Ridge were determined by the sediment delivery to the deep basin as well as circulation changes. Sediment delivery increased during glacials (especially during the last 500 kyr and particularly since Stage 6). A fundamental change in the thermohaline circulation occurred at about 500 ka corresponding to the end of the Mid-Pleistocene Transition period at the onset of the predominant 100-kyr climate cyclicity. Sedimentation related to WBUC had intensified at that time and had become more focused at depths below 3000 m. Changes in hematite content and sedimentation rate show a pulse of sediment via the St. Lawrence outlet at the Pliocene-Pleistocene boundary suggesting that a likely change in the hydrography/physiography of the Laurentide Ice Sheet could have been involved in the climatic and ocean circulation changes at that time.

Pliocene vegetation dynamics and climate variability in West Africa have been investigated through pollen and XRF-scanning records obtained from sediment cores of ODP Site 659 (18°N, 21°W). The comparison between total pollen accumulation rates and Ti/Ca ratios, which is strongly correlated with the dust input at the site, showed elevated aeolian transport of pollen during dusty periods. Comparison of the pollen records of ODP Site 659 and the nearby Site 658 resulted in a robust reconstruction of West African vegetation change since the Late Pliocene. Between 3.6 and 3.0 Ma the savannah in West Africa differed in composition from its modern counterpart and was richer in Asteraceae, in particular of the Tribus Cichorieae. Between 3.24 and 3.20 Ma a stable wet period is inferred from the Fe/K ratios, which could stand for a narrower and better specified mid-Pliocene (mid-Piacenzian) warm time slice. The northward extension of woodland and savannah, albeit fluctuating, was generally greater in the Pliocene. NE trade wind vigour increased intermittently around 2.7 and 2.6 Ma, and more or less permanently since 2.5 Ma, as inferred from increased pollen concentrations of trade wind indicators (Ephedra, Artemisia, Pinus). Our findings link the NE trade wind development with the intensification of the Northern Hemisphere glaciations (iNHG). Prior to the iNHG, little or no systematic relation could be found between sea surface temperatures of the North Atlantic with aridity and dust in West Africa.

A preliminary palynological survey of 118 samples from the Mississippi Fan (Sites 615, 616, and 620) and from 2 intraslope basins (Sites 619 and 618) shows pollen in all samples. Reworked pollen is generally abundant, forming over 50% of the sum of pollen and reworked pollen. Concentration of nonreworked pollen is usually low (on the order of tens to hundreds of pollen grains per cubic centimeter wet sediment). Conifers, primarily Pinus, Picea, and Tsuga, dominate Pleistocene marine pollen spectra; significant percentages of Quercus are present in Holocene sediments and in sediments deposited during oxygen-isotope Stage 5.

Lower Cretaceous and Jurassic sediments from Ocean Drilling Program Leg 129 (Sites 800, 801, and 802) and Deep Sea Drilling Project Sites 167, 195, 196, and 463 were analyzed for palynomorphs. In contrast to Atlantic occurrences, all Cretaceous pelagic sediments at these sites in the Pacific are barren of preserved palynomorphs. This absence of palynomorphs appears to be independent of facies, sedimentation rate, paleodepth, and paleolatitude. Except for one sample, the dinocyst-bearing sediments also contain spores and pollen grains. The only palynomorphs observed were in redeposited material having sources near former emergent seamounts. Among the dinoflagellate cysts at Site 802, Dingodinium cerviculum, Odontochitina operculata, Canninginopsis colliveri, and Oligosphaeridium complex are the most important species. Based on the presence of these species and their known biostratigraphic ranges, this basal interval of Site 802 is considered to be Aptian/earliest Albian in age. The lack of dinocysts within the Pacific pelagic sediments may be the result of ubiquitous oxygenated bottom waters throughout the Cretaceous or may indicate that open-marine dinoflagellate populations in this ocean did not produce cysts.

During Leg 119 of the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP), Quaternary sediments of the Southern Ocean were examined for the presence and abundance of Chaetoceros resting spores. Six drill sites were occupied along the Kerguelen Plateau. An additional five drill sites were clustered within Prydz Bay, Antarctica. Chaetoceros resting spores were present at all sites examined. These resting spore assemblages were comprised primarily of Chaetoceros neglectus and several unidentified Chaetoceros species. Resting spore assemblages accounted for approximately 20% of the total diatom assemblage (ranging from 0% to 91.4% of any given sample). Quantitative estimates of resting spores demonstrated considerable downcore abundance fluctuations, ranging from 0 to 1.82*10*9 valves/g sediment. The highest spore production rates (3.75*10**12 spores/cm/yr) were found on the northern Kerguelen Plateau (Sample 119-736B-1H-3,35-37 cm). A lack of adequate chronological control at all sites prevented proper between-core comparisons. Mean resting spore abundance, however, appeared highest within the sediments of Prydz Bay and across the northern Kerguelen Plateau. Deep-water stations of the southern Kerguelen Plateau demonstrated the lower spore abundances and a reduction in the percentage contribution of spore to the total diatom assemblage.

Sannai-Maruyama is one of the most famous and best-researched mid-Holocene (mid-Jomon) archaeological sites in Japan, because of a large community of people for a long period. Archaeological studies have shown that the Jomon people inhabited the Sannai-Maruyama site from 5.9-4.2 +/- 0.1 cal. kyr B.P. However, a continuous record of the terrestrial and marine environments around the site has not been available. Core KT05-7 PC-02, was recovered from Mutsu Bay, only 20 km from the site, for the reconstruction of high-resolution time series of environmental records, including sea surface temperature (SST). C37 alkenone SSTs showed clear fluctuations, with four periods of high (8.4-7.9, 7.0-5.9, 5.1-4.1, and 2.3-1.4 cal. kyr B.P.) and four of low (-8.4, 7.9-7.0, 5.9-5.1, and 4.1-2.3 cal. kyr B.P.) SST. Thus, each SST cycle lasted 1.0-2.0 kyr, and the amplitude of fluctuation was about 1.5-2.0 °C. Total organic carbon (TOC) and C37 alkenone contents, and the TOC/total nitrogen ratio indicate that marine biogenic production was low before 7.0 cal. kyr B.P., but was clearly increased between 5.9 and 4.0 cal. kyr B.P., because of stronger vertical mixing. During the period when the community at the site prospered (between 5.9 and 4.2 +/- 0.1 cal. kyr B.P.), the terrestrial climate was relatively warm. The high relative abundance of pollen of both Castanea and Quercus subgen. Cyclobalanopsis supports the interpretation that the local climate was optimal for human habitation. Between 5.9 and 5.1 cal. kyr B.P., in spite of warm terrestrial climates, the C37 alkenone SST was low; this apparent discrepancy may be attributed to the water column structure in the Tsugaru Strait, which differed from the modern condition. The evidence suggests that at about 5.9 cal. kyr B.P, high productivity of marine resources such as fish and shellfish and a warm terrestrial climate led to the establishment of a human community at the Sannai-Maruyama site. Then, at about 4.1 +/- 0.1 cal. kyr B.P., abrupt marine and terrestrial cooling, indicated by a decrease of about 2 °C in the C37 alkenone SST and an increase in pollen of taxa of cooler climates, led to a reduced terrestrial food supply, causing the people to abandon the site. The timing of the abandonment is consistent with the timing (around 4.0-4.3 cal. kyr B.P.) of the decline of civilizations in north Mesopotamia and along the Yangtze River. These findings suggest that a temperature rise of ~2 °C in this century as a result of global warming could have a great impact on the human community and especially on agriculture, despite the advances of contemporary society.

Samples from Upper Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous sediments at Site 511 were analyzed for palynomorphs. Three palynological assemblages were identified: Upper Jurassic (presumably Tithonian), Neocomian-Aptian, and lower Albian. These were correlated to synchronous assemblages in Argentina, South Africa, and Australia and were compared with Jurassic palynoassemblages from Hole 330, Leg 36.

The distribution of pollen in marine sediments is used to record vegetation change on the continent. Generally, a good latitudinal correspondence exists between the distribution patterns of pollen in the marine surface sediments and the occurrence of the source plants on the adjacent continent. To investigate land-sea interactions during deglaciation, we compare proxies for continental (pollen assemblages) and marine conditions (alkenone-derived sea surface temperatures) of two high-resolution, radiocarbon-dated sedimentary records from the tropical southeast Atlantic. The southern site is located West of the Cunene River mouth; the northern site is located West of the Angolan Huambe Mountains. It is inferred that the vegetation in Angola developed from Afroalpine and open savannah during the last Glacial maximum (LGM) via Afromontane Podocarpus forest during Heinrich Event 1 (H1), to an early increase of lowland forest after 14.5 ka. The vegetation record indicates dry and cold conditions during the LGM, cool and wet conditions during H1 and a gradual rise in temperature starting well before the Younger Dryas (YD) period. Terrestrial and oceanic climate developments seem largely running parallel, in contrast to the situation ca. 5° further South, where marine and terrestrial developments diverge during the YD. The cool and wet conditions in tropical West Africa, South of the equator, during H1 suggest that low-latitude insolation variation is more important than the slowdown of the thermohaline circulation for the climate in tropical Africa.
