The aim of this project was a petrogeochemical study of igneous rocks in the areas of the Mohns and Knipovich Ridges, both being the northern extensions of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR), using data available for quenching glass samples collected during Cruises 36 and 38 of R/V Akademic Mstislav Keldysh and during Cruise 15 of R/V Professor Logachev. Results of igneous rock studying from the Mohns and Knipovich Ridges at the background of evolution of the total North Atlantic Province, which had been identified earlier from tectonic and geophysical data, showed that igneous rocks of the Knipovich Ridge can be ranked as shallow tholeiites, primary melts of which were relatively rich in Na and Si and poor in Fe. This type of magma is characteristic of colder regions of the oceanic lithosphere. Its occurrence in the Knipovich Ridge and its potential propagation up to the Gakkel Ridge suggest that igneous rocks of this region originated under conditions of passive spreading in contrast to the MAR region in vicinity of Iceland and Azores, where substantial contribution of hotter material of a rising plume contributed to formation of the oceanic crust. The North Atlantic Ocean is the youngest province in terms of ocean-floor opening. Geologically and geophysically it is one of well studied regions of the World Ocean. Nevertheless some basic key items of its origin still remain to be clarified. In 1975 Scatler et al. proved specifics of this region manifested in growth of the gravity field, and also in relative height of the ocean floor in the region of 33-70°N, which was associated by them with rise of the hotter mantle, as compared with common regions of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Later this view was confirmed by character of magmatism, which differed in depth of generation and by melting degree of the resulting primary magma. Uniqueness of the North Atlantic region was also proved by the fact that this region was marked by extensive geochemical anomalies associated with Azores, Iceland, and Jan Mayen. All of these data allow to consider the northern part of the MAR (north of 33°N) as an united global geotectonic province. The Mohns and Knipovich Ridges located north of Iceland locate at the northern end of this province. This is the least known region. Therefore, new data for ridge areas of 73-77°N are needed for more complete geologic history of the Arctic Basin. The aim of this study was to carry out a complex comparison of magmatism at the Mohns and Knipovich Ridges with magmatism at large segments of the MAR northern province and to reconstruct mechanisms of primary magma formation, as well as conditions of their fractionation. This paper was based on results of studying quenched glasses, which reflect evolution of melt in the course of its formation.

A geochemical investigation has been conducted of a suite of four sediment cores collected from directly beneath the hydrothermal plume at distances of 2 to 25 km from the Rainbow hydrothermal field. As well as a large biogenic component (>80% CaCO3) these sediments record clear enrichments of the elements Fe, Cu, Mn, V, P, and As from hydrothermal plume fallout but only minor detrital background material. Systematic variations in the abundances of "hydrothermal" elements are observed at increasing distance from the vent site, consistent with chemical evolution of the dispersing plume. Further, pronounced Ni and Cr enrichments at specific levels within each of the two cores collected from closest to the vent site are indicative of discrete episodes of additional input of ultrabasic material at these two near-field locations. Radiocarbon dating reveals mean Holocene accumulation rates for all four cores of 2.7 to 3.7 cm.kyr?1, with surface mixed layers 7 to 10+ cm thick, from which a history of deposition from the Rainbow hydrothermal plume can be deduced. Deposition from the plume supplies elements to the underlying sediments that are either directly hydrothermally sourced (e.g., Fe, Mn, Cu) or scavenged from seawater via the hydrothermal plume (e.g., V, P, As). Holocene fluxes into to the cores' surface mixed layers are presented which, typically, are an order of magnitude greater than "background" authigenic fluxes from the open North Atlantic. One core, collected closest to the vent site, indicates that both the concentration and flux of hydrothermally derived material increased significantly at some point between 8 and 12 14C kyr ago; the preferred explanation is that this variation reflects the initiation/intensification of hydrothermal venting at the Rainbow hydrothermal field at this time - perhaps linked to some specific tectonic event in this fault-controlled hydrothermal setting.

The surface distributions of dissolved silicic acid, chlorophyll and diatom abundance were measured in the plume of the Mississippi River and adjacent waters during spring (late April and early May 1993) and summer (July 1992). In spring, the time of maximum river flow, there was an intense diatom bloom with a mean diatom abundance of 1.5 x 10**7 cells/l, more than an order of magnitude higher than in summer. Mixing curves of silicic acid concentration ([Si(OH)4]) versus salinity indicate that biological uptake within the river plume removed >99% of the Si(OH)4 supplied by the river in spring and 80 to 95% in summer. In spring [Si(OH)4] was occasionally depleted to <0.2 µM-among the lowest values ever reported from the ocean-with extensive depletion to >=0.5 µM over the shelf. In summer [Si(OH)4] was less severely depleted; the lowest measured was 0.93 µM and all others were >=2.4 µM. 30Si kinetic experiments were performed during both spring and summer to measure the degree to which the rate of Si uptake by the natural diatom assemblages was limited in situ by substrate availability. In spring the dependence of the specific uptake rate (V) on extracellular [Si(OH)4] conformed much more closely to the Michaelis-Menten saturation function than has been observed in past studies. Strong dependence of V on [Si(OH)4] was observed throughout the most Si(OH)4-depleted (<0.5 µM) region, where V was limited to 12 to 45% of the diatom assemblages' maximum uptake rate (Vmax). Half-saturation concentrations for Si uptake (Ks) averaged 0.85 uM (range = 0.48 to 1.71; n = 7) in spring, with the lowest values equal to the lowest previously reported for natural diatom assemblages. There was only 1 station in summer where V was limited by [Si(OH)4], and at that station Ks was 5.3 µM-quite high in comparison with previous studies. At stations where V was limited by [Si(OH)4], in both spring and summer, Chaetoceros spp. were numerically dominant; where there was no Si limitation other diatoms, usually Skeletonema costatum, dominated. The data thus indicate strong Si limitation in spring, with diatom assemblages well adapted to low [Si(OH)4], but little or no Si limitation in summer. Historical data suggest that coastal Si(OH)4 depletion and Si limitation may be recent phenomena in the northern Gulf of Mexico, resulting from increasing [NO3-] and decreasing [Si(OH)4] in the Mississippi River during the past 30 to 50 yr.

In July 1995 geological and biological studies in the axial zone of the northern part of the Mohn's Ridge (72°20'N) were carried out during Cruise 36 of R/V Akademik Mstislav Keldysh. Slopes of the neovolcanic zone, as well as a caldera on its crest were investigated with use of deep-sea manned submersibles Mir, geological and biological samples were also collected. Use of the Rosette sounding complex provided recognition of several major hydrothermal plumes. Bottom sediments of the marginal depression are enriched in metals characteristic for hydrothermal metalliferous sediments. Thus, a new unknown hydrothermal field was found.

During R/V Meteor-cruise no. 30 4 moorings with 17 current meters were placed on the continental slope of Sierra Leone at depths between 81 and 1058 meters. The observation period started on March 8, 1973, 16.55 hours GMT and lasted 19 days for moorings M30_068MOOR, M30_069MOOR, M30_070MOOR on the slope and 9 days for M30_067MOOR on the shelf. One current meter recorded at location M30_067MOOR for 22 days. Hydrographic data were collected at 32 stations by means of the "Kieler Multi-Meeressonde". Harmonic analysis is applied to the first 15 days of the time series to determine the M2 and S2 tides. By vertically averaging of the Fourier coefficients the field of motion is separated into its barotropic and its baroclinic component. The expected error generated by white Gaussian noise is estimated. To estimate the influence of the particular vertical distribution of the current meters, the barotropic M2 tide is calculated by ommitting and interchanging time series of different moorings. It is shown that only the data of moorings M30_069MOOR, M30_070MOOR and M30_067MOOR can be used. The results for the barotropic M2 tide agree well with the previous publications of other authors. On the slope at a depth of 1000 m there is a free barotropic wave under the influence of the Coriolis-force propagating along the slope with an amplitude of 3.4 cm S**-1. On the shelf, the maximum current is substantially greater (5.8 cm s**-1) and the direction of propagation is perpendicular to the slope. As for the continental slope a separation into different baroclinic modes using vertical eigenmodes is not reasonable, an interpretation of the total baroclinic wave field is tried by means of the method of characteristis. Assuming the continental slope to generate several linear waves, which superpose, baroclinic tidal ellipses are calculated. The scattering of the direction of the major axes M30_069MOOR is in contrast to M30_070MOOR, where they are bundled within an angle of 60°. This is presumably caused by the different character of the bottom topography in the vicinity of the two moorings. A detailed discussion of M30_069MOOR is renounced since the accuracy of the bathymetric chart is not sufficient to prove any relation between waves and topography. The bundeling of the major axes at M30_070MOOR can be explained by the longslope changes of the slope, which cause an energy transfer from the longslope barotropic component to the downslope baroclinic component. The maximum amplitude is found at a depth of 245 m where it is expected from the characteristics originating at the shelf edge. Because of the dominating barotropic tide high coherence is found between most of the current meters. To show the influence of the baroclinic tidal waves, the effect of the mean current is considered. There are two periods nearly opposite longshore mean current. For 128 hours during each of these periods, starting on March 11, 05.00, and March 21, 08.30, the coherences and energy spectra are calculated. The changes in the slope of the characteristics are found in agreement with the changes of energy and coherence. Because of the short periods of nearly constant mean current, some of the calculated differences of energy and coherence are not statistically significant. For the M2 tide a calculation of the ratios of vertically integrated total baroclinic energy and vertically integrated barotropic kinetic energy is carried out. Taking into account both components (along and perpendicular to the slope) the obtained values are 0.75 and 0.98 at the slope and 0.38 at the shelf. If each component is considered separately, the ratios are 0.39 and 1.16 parallel to the slope and 5.1 and 15.85 for the component perpendicular to it. Taking the energy transfer from the longslope component to the doenslope component into account, a simple model yields an energy-ratio of 2.6. Considering the limited application of the theory to the real conditions, the obtained are in agreement with the values calculated by Sandstroem.

Plume-top altitude time series of the volcanic plume during the eruption of Grímsvötn in Iceland 21-28 May 2011. The altitude was estimated from weather radar echo top data from two weather radars, Keflavik and Klaustur. Keflavik radar is a fixed position C-band weather radar close to Keflavik International Airport, at 64°01.583'N, 22°38.150'W. The height of the antenna is 47 m a.s.l. and the distance to Grímsvötn volcano is 257 km. Klaustur radar is a mobile X-band weather radar located close to Kirkjubaejarklaustur, at 63°46.500'N, 17°57.817'W. The height of the antenna is also 47 m a.s.l. and the distance to Grímsvötn volcano is 75 km.

Pb, Nd, and Sr isotopic results for lavas of the Cretaceous Ontong Java and Manihiki oceanic plateaus fall well within the modern-day oceanic island or hot pot field. The data provide no evidence of old continental basements but indicate a major involvement of 'Kerguelen-type' or 'EM-I'-like mantle in the sources of both plateaus, which appear to have probably been formed, at least in part, by hotspots. However, the presently active hotspots that Pacific plate reconstructions suggest might have been possible plateau sources lack Kerguelen-type isotopic compositions. Either these hotspots did not participate in the formation of the two plateaus, or if they did, Kerguelen-type material must have been volumetrically much more important early in their existence. Two hypotheses for the origins of these plateaus which involve hotspot sources are consistent with the sparse available geochemical, geochronological and geophysical data. The first holds that the plateaus formed cataclysmically in association with surfacing plume heads; the second posits a relatively steady but robust hotspot at or near a ridge crest and requires a much longer period of formation. A near-ridge origin appears to be indicated by evidence that most of the Pacific plateaus were built largely on relatively young ocean crust. However, we suggest that a near-ridge origin is also compatible with the plume head concept in that plume heads appear very likely to become associated with spreading axes through their influence on rift propagation, which should be substantially greater than for ordinary hotspots. In either case, the lack of hotspot tracks (seamount chains) attached to the two plateaus would be a consequence of ridge migration or rift propagation in a near-ridge setting.

The eruption of Eyjafjallajökull volcano in 2010 lasted for 39 days, 14 April-23 May. The eruption had two explosive phases separated by a phase with lava formation and reduced explosive activity. The height of the plume was monitored every 5 min with a C-band weather radar located in Keflavík International Airport, 155 km distance from the volcano. Furthermore, several web cameras were mounted with a view of the volcano, and their images saved every five seconds. Time series of the plume-top altitude were constructed from the radar observations and images from a web camera located in the village Hvolsvöllur at 34 km distance from the volcano. This paper presents the independent radar and web camera time series and performs cross validation.
