The samples were concentrated down to 50 cm**3 by slow decantation after storage for 20 days in a cool and dark place. The species identification was done under light microscope OLIMPUS-BS41 connected to a video-interactive image analysis system at magnification of the ocular 10X and objective - 40X. A Sedgwick-Rafter camera (1ml) was used for counting. 400 specimen were counted for each sample, while rare and large species were checked in the whole sample (Manual of phytoplankton, 2005). Species identification was mainly after Carmelo T. (1997) and Fukuyo, Y. (2000). Total phytoplankton abundance was calculated as sum of taxon-specific abundances. Total phytoplankton biomass was calculated as sum of taxon-specific biomasses. The cell biovolume was determined based on morpho-metric measurement of phytoplankton units and the corresponding geometric shapes as described in detail in (Edier, 1979).

A high-resolution biochronology is presented for the Late Quaternary of the central Mediterranean. In the Late Pleistocene-Holocene successions three assemblage zones are distinguished on the basis of frequency patterns of planktic foraminifera. The age of these zones is determined by Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS)14C dating. The zonal boundaries are dated at 12,700 yr B.P. (the end of Termination Ia) and 9600 yr B.P. (the start of Termination Ib), respectively. The AMS dates show that major changes in the planktic and benthic realms occurred synchronously over wide areas, although records of individual species may show important regional differences. In the studied areas, resedimentation processes revealed by anomalous successions of14C dates, play a far more important role than indicated by the sedimentological and micropaleontological data. Possibly these processes contribute to the very high accumulation rates in the glacial Zone III. Although the AMS technique has increased the accuracy of14C-measurements, admixture of older carbonate may still lead to substantial age differences between areas with different sedimentary regimes.

The dataset is based on samples collected in the summer of 2001 in the Western Black Sea in front of Bulgaria coast (transects at c. Kaliakra and c. Galata). The whole dataset is composed of 26 samples (from 10 stations of National Monitoring Grid) with data of mesozooplankton species composition abundance and biomass. Samples were collected in discrete layers 0-10, 10-20, 10-25, 25-50, 50-75, 75-90. Zooplankton samples were collected with vertical closing Juday net, diameter - 36cm, mesh size 150 µm. Tows were performed from surface down to bottom meters depths in discrete layers. Samples were preserved by a 4% formaldehyde sea water buffered solution. Sampling volume was estimated by multiplying the mouth area with the wire length. Mesozooplankton abundance: The collected material was analysed using the method of Domov (1959). Samples were brought to volume of 25-30 ml depending upon zooplankton density and mixed intensively until all organisms were distributed randomly in the sample volume. After that 5 ml of sample was taken and poured in the counting chamber which is a rectangle form for taxomomic identification and count. Large (> 1 mm body length) and not abundant species were calculated in whole sample. Counting and measuring of organisms were made in the Dimov chamber under the stereomicroscope to the lowest taxon possible. Taxonomic identification was done at the Institute of Oceanology by Lyudmila Kamburska and Kremena Stefanova using the relevant taxonomic literature (Mordukhay-Boltovskoy, F.D. (Ed.). 1968, 1969,1972). Taxon-specific abundance: The collected material was analysed using the method of Domov (1959). After that 5 ml of sample was taken and poured in the counting chamber which is a rectangle form for taxomomic identification and count. Copepods and Cladoceras were identified and enumerated; the other mesozooplankters were identified and enumerated at higher taxonomic level (commonly named as mesozooplankton groups). Research on sediments recovered during Ocean Drilling Leg 160 has concentrated on two issues: the first concerned the stratigraphy of sapropel formation, the second was oriented to clarify specific processes that explain sapropel origin. Progress has been made in the construction of stratigraphic composites out of sedimentary sequences from individual holes at each of the palaeoceanographic sites. On the composites, initial work has resulted in the establishment of high-resolution and intermediate-resolution stratigraphies for three sites (963, 964, 967); correlation of sedimentary cycles to astronomical (insolation) cycles extends the stratigraphies to Sites 969 and 966. The sapropel occurrences in the marine and land sequences over the entire Eastern Mediterranean are correlated; with the resolution that can be obtained from isotope studies, groups of sapropels occurred simultaneously over the entire basin. In detail, however, the temporal and facies patterns of sapropel sequences differ between individual sites and depositional basins. The differences may be related to effects of water depth, diagenesis, and post-depositional tectonic attenuation of sequences. Studies on the geochemistry and facies of sapropels agree that anoxic conditions favoured preservation of organic matter in sapropels, caused the enrichment of trace metals associated with sapropels, and helped to preserve primary sedimentary structures. Besides, all evidence is consistent with elevated fluxes of organic matter and associated elements during sapropel events.

Two planktonic foraminiferal oxygen isotope records of ODP Hole 653A (Tyrrhenian Sea) are presented for the time period extending from approximately 0.8 to 3.0 Ma. Six, generally accepted, synchronous bioevents were used to precise the oxygen isotope chronology and to identify the oxygen isotope stages 22 down to 114. Subsequently, this oxygen isotope chronology was used to determine the synchronism or diachronism of various other biostratigraphic events with those recorded in the Singa and Ficarazzi land sections (Italy) and those in other DSDP/ODP sites. New results concern the diachronity of the FOD of the planktonic foraminiferal species N. atlantica, G.truncatulinoides truncatulinoides and G. inflata between ODP Hole 653A and the Italian landsections. Because many species entered the Mediterranean in short term fluxes, strongly related to the southward migration of cool North Atlantic surface waters, their time distribution through the Pliocene-Pleistocene generally corresponds to alternated intervals of presence and absence. This should explain most of the apparently diachronous appearances and disappearances. Alternating presence-absence patterns are of less importance for the various nannofossil events. The LOD of D. surculus occurs during the transition of stage 100 to 101 in both ODP Hole 653A and the Singa section, which is in perfect agreement with the disappearance of this species from the open ocean. The LOD of D. pentaradiatus in the Mediterranean occurs in stages 100-99, which seems to be consistent with the extinction of this species in the southern Hemisphere. G. oceanica, which corresponds to the 4 µm < Gephyrocapsa spp <5.5 µm is recorded in stages 65 to 64 at ODP Hole 653A. The Gephyrocapsa spp. >5.5 µm first occurred in stage 51 at Hole 653A, which fits within the uncertainty interval for this event stretching from stage 51 to 47 in the open ocean and seems therefore a useful tool for conventional biostratigraphy in the Mediterranean.

A high-resolution stratigraphic framework is presented for sapropel S5, which represents the low-mid latitude climate optimum of the previous interglacial period (Eemian). The framework is based on three sites along a transect from west to east through the eastern Mediterranean, and is further validated using a fourth site. This method allows expression of S5-based proxy records of Eemian climate variability along a standardised depth scale that offers unprecedented possibilities for assessment of spatial gradients and signal leads and lags in an interval where highresolution (radiocarbon-style) dating cannot be performed. Our lateral comparison of S5 sapropels suggests that the onset of S5 in ODP site 967C (Eratosthenes seamount) was 1-6 centuries delayed relative to the onsets in more westerly sites.
