This dataset contains the collection of available published paired Uk'37 and Tex86 records spanning multi-millennial to multi-million year time scales, as well as a collection of Mg/Ca-derived temperatures measured in parallel on surface and subsurface dwelling foraminifera, both used in the analyses of Ho and Laepple, Nature Geoscience 2016. As the signal-to-noise ratios of proxy-derived Holocene temperatures are relatively low, we selected records that contain at least the last deglaciation (oldest sample >18kyr BP).

Molecular and isotope compositions of headspace and total (free + sorbed) hydrocarbon gases from drilled cores of the three ODP Leg 104 Sites 642, 643, and 644 of the Voring Plateau are used to characterize the origin and distribution of these gases in Holocene to Eocene sediments. Only minor amounts of methane were found in the headspace (0.1 to < 0.001 vol%). Although methane through propane are present in all of the total gas samples, different origins account for the concentration and composition variations found. Site 643 at the foot of the outer Voring Plateau represents a geological setting with poor hydrocarbon generating potential, (sediments with low TOC and maturity overlying oceanic basement). Correspondingly, the total gas concentrations are low, typical for background gases (yield C1 - 4 = 31 to 232 ppb, C1/C2+ = 0.6 to 4; delta13C(CH4) -22 per mil to -42 per mil) probably of a diagenetic origin. Holocene to Eocene sediments, which overlie volcanic units, were drilled on the outer Vdring Plateau, at Holes 642B and D. Similar to Site 643, these sediments possess a poor hydrocarbon generating potential. The total gas character (yield C1 - 4 = 20 to 410 ppb; C1/C2+ = 1.7 to 13.3; delta13C(CH4) ca. -23 per mil to -40 per mil) again indicates a diagenetic origin, perhaps with the addition of some biogenic gas. The higher geothermal gradient and the underlying volcanics do not appear to have any influence on the gas geochemistry. The free gas (Vacutainer TM) in the sediments at Site 644 are dominated by biogenic gas (C1/C2+ > 104; delta13C(CH4) -77 per mil). Indications, in the total gas, of hydrocarbons with a thermogenic signature (yield C1 - 4 = 121 to 769 ppb, C1/ C2+ = 3 to 8; delta13C(CH4) = -39 per mil to -71 per mil), could not be unequivocally confirmed as such. Alternatively, these gases may represent mixtures of diagenetic and biogenic gases.

We measured oxygen isotopes and Mg/Ca ratios in the surface-dwelling planktonic foraminifer Globigerinoides ruber (white s.s.) and the thermocline dweller Pulleniatina obliquiloculata to investigate upper ocean spatial variability in the Indo-Pacific Warm Pool (IPWP). We focused on three critical time intervals: the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM; 18-21.5 ka), the early Holocene (8-9 ka), and the late Holocene (0-2 ka). Our records from 24 stations in the South China Sea, Timor Sea, Indonesian seas, and western Pacific indicate overall dry and cool conditions in the IPWP during the LGM with a low thermal gradient between surface and thermocline waters. During the early Holocene, sea surface temperatures increased by ~3°C over the entire region, indicating intensification of the IPWP. However, in the eastern Indian Ocean (Timor Sea), the thermocline gradually shoaled from the LGM to early Holocene, reflecting intensification of the subsurface Indonesian Throughflow (ITF). Increased surface salinity in the South China Sea during the Holocene appears related to northward displacement of the monsoonal rain belt over the Asian continent together with enhanced influx of saltier Pacific surface water through the Luzon Strait and freshwater export through the Java Sea. Opening of the freshwater portal through the Java Sea in the early Holocene led to a change in the vertical structure of the ITF from surface- to thermocline-dominated flow and to substantial freshening of Timor Sea thermocline waters.

Interstitial waters were collected at only two sites during Leg 82, Sites 558 and 563. Only very small changes in dissolved calcium and magnesium occur, presumably resulting from reactions in the underlying basement basalts. Dissolved strontium profiles indicate maxima, which can be understood in terms of carbonate recrystallization processes. Data on Sr/Ca in carbonates cannot be used to estimate the extent of recrystallization that has occurred in these sediments.

A depth transect of cores from 1268 to 3909 m water depth in the western South Atlantic are ideally situated to monitor the interocean exchange of deep water and variations in the relative strength of northern and southern sources of deep water production. Benthic foraminiferal Cd/Ca and d13C data suggest that Glacial North Atlantic Intermediate Water (GNAIW) extended at least as far south as 28°S in the western South Atlantic. The core of nutrient-depleted water was situated at ~1500 m, above and below water masses with higher nutrient concentrations. When examined in conjunction with published paired Cd/Ca and d13C from intermediate depth cores from other basins, it appears that the extent of GNAIW influence on the intermediate waters of the world's oceans was less than suggested previously. Differentiating among possible pathways for the glacial deep ocean (>3 km) requires a better understanding of the controls on Cd/Ca and d13C values of benthic foraminifera.

Mineralogical and geochemical analyses of alteration products from upper and lower volcanic series recovered during ODP Leg 104 reveal variations both in composition and order of crystallization of clay minerals vesicles and voids filling and replacing glass. These results provide information about successive alteration stages of rocks and interlayered volcaniclastic sediments. The first stage, related to initial basalt-seawater interaction, is characterized by development of Fe-smectites, especially Fe-rich saponite. A second stage of intermittently superimposed subaerial weathering is marked by iron-oxides-halloysite-kaolinite formation. The third episode, interpreted as hydrothermal on the basis of O-isotopic data, is defined by postburial coprecipitation of Fe-poor, Mg-rich saponite and celadonite. A distinct final and pervasive hydrothermal stage, occurring mainly in the lower series and dominated by Al-smectites-zeolites assemblage, indicates changes toward a more reducing alteration environment.

The variations in major elements and isotope composition (87Sr/86Sr, delta18O, deltaD) of interstitial waters in Leg 104 sediments is most probably caused by the alteration of volcanic matter. A reaction scheme where volcanic glass reacts with pore-water magnesium and potassium to form trioctahedral smectite, phillipsite, and chert is proposed. Model calculations demonstrate that the pore waters may evolve their negative 6180 signatures without recourse to unreasonably large amounts of volcanic detritus or external sources.

During Ocean Drilling Program Leg 104 a 900-m-thick sequence of volcanic rocks was drilled at Hole 642E on the Vøring Plateau, Norwegian Sea. This sequence erupted in two series (upper and lower series) upon continental basement. The upper series corresponds to the seaward-dipping seismic reflectors and comprises a succession of about 122 flows of transitional oceanic tholeiite composition. They have been subdivided into several formations consisting of flows related to each other by crystal fractionation processes, magma mixing, or both. Major- and trace-element chemistry indicates affinities to Tertiary plateau lavas of northeast Greenland and to Holocene lavas from shallow transitional segments of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, such as Reykjanes Ridge. The tholeiitic magmas have been derived from a slightly LREE-depleted mantle source. Two tholeiitic dikes that intruded the lower series derive from an extremely depleted mantle source. Interlayered volcaniclastic sediments are dominantly ferrobasaltic and more differentiated. They appear to come from a LREE-enriched mantle source, and may have been erupted in close vicinity of the Vøring Plateau during hydroclastic eruptions. The two tholeiitic dikes that intruded the lower series as well as some flows at the base of the upper series show evidence of assimilation of continental upper crustal material.

At present time, there is a lack of knowledge on the interannual climate-related variability of zooplankton communities of the tropical Atlantic, central Mediterranean Sea, Caspian Sea, and Aral Sea, due to the absence of appropriate databases. In the mid latitudes, the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is the dominant mode of atmospheric fluctuations over eastern North America, the northern Atlantic Ocean and Europe. Therefore, one of the issues that need to be addressed through data synthesis is the evaluation of interannual patterns in species abundance and species diversity over these regions in regard to the NAO. The database has been used to investigate the ecological role of the NAO in interannual variations of mesozooplankton abundance and biomass along the zonal array of the NAO influence. Basic approach to the proposed research involved: (1) development of co-operation between experts and data holders in Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, UK, and USA to rescue and compile the oceanographic data sets and release them on CD-ROM, (2) organization and compilation of a database based on FSU cruises to the above regions, (3) analysis of the basin-scale interannual variability of the zooplankton species abundance, biomass, and species diversity.
