The conservation of birds and their habitats is essential to maintain well-functioning ecosystems including human-dominated habitats. In simplified or homogenized landscapes, patches of natural and semi-natural habitat are essential for the survival of plant and animal populations. We compared species composition and diversity of trees and birds between gallery forests, tree islands and hedges in a Colombian savanna landscape to assess how fragmented woody plant communities affect forest bird communities and how differences in habitat characteristics influenced bird species traits and their potential ecosystem function. Bird and tree diversity was higher in forests than in tree islands and hedges. Soil depth influenced woody species distribution, and canopy cover and tree height determined bird species distribution, resulting in plant and bird communities that mainly differed between forest and non-forest habitat. Bird and tree species and traits widely co-varied. Bird species in tree islands and hedges were on average smaller, less specialized to habitat and more tolerant to disturbance than in forest, but dietary differences did not emerge. Despite being less complex and diverse than forests, hedges and tree islands significantly contribute to the conservation of forest biodiversity in the savanna matrix. Forest fragments remain essential for the conservation of forest specialists, but hedges and tree islands facilitate spillover of more tolerant forest birds and their ecological functions such as seed dispersal from forest to the savanna matrix.

In this study isopod species of the Ross Sea were investigated. Literature until May 2008 was checked to provide an overview of all known and described species in the Ross Sea. This species checklist was then enlarged through material of the 19th Italica expedition in 2004. During this expedition for the first time a small mesh net (500 µm) was used. Nine thousand four hundred and eighty one isopod specimens were collected during this expedition. Through this material the number of isopod species in the Ross Sea increased from 42 to 117 species, which belong to 20 families and 49 genera. Fifty-six percentage of the isopods species collected during the Italica expedition are new to science. The zoogeography of the 117 species was investigated. A non-transformed binary presence-absence data matrix was constructed using the Bray-Curtis coefficient. The results were displayed in a cluster analysis and by nonmetric multidimensional scaling (MDS). This paper gives a first insight into the occurrence and distribution of the isopod species of the Ross Sea.

Cape Roberts Project drillcore 1 was obtained from Roberts Ridge, a sea-floor high located at 77°S, 16 km offshore from Cape Roberts in western McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. The recovered core is about 147 m long with the upper 43.15 metres below the sea floor (revised figure) being dated as Quarternary and the older part of the sequence being Miocene. The core includes nine facies: sandy diamict, muddy diamict, gravel/conglomerate, mud(stone), clay(stone) and carbonate. These facies occure in associations that are repeated in particulare sequences throughout the core, and are interpreted as representing different depositional environments through time. Seven lithofacies associations are interpreted as representing offshore shelf, ice protected/below wave-base; prodeltaic/offshore shelf; delta front/sandy shelf; ice system; subglacial till/rainout diamict/debris flow diamicts singly or in combination; and a carbonate-rich shelf bank. The facies associations are used to infer that the Quaternary section represents deposition on a polar shelf with perhaps two or three glacial fluctuations. The Quaternary carbonate unit indicates a period of ice sheet retreat, but local glacial activity may have increased with an increase in costal precipitation. The Miocene section represents polythermal glacial systems. The older Miocene section is glacially dominated whereas the younger section is much less so. The glacially dominated section may provide evidence for a major glacial advance thar resulted un a low stand of global eustatic sea level at that time. After the low stand, eustatic sea level was gradually rising during deposition of the younger section dominated more by non-glacial processes.
