Two bottom sediment cores (BP00-23/7 and BP00-7/6) recovered from the Yenisei transect in the southern Kara Sea are described. Data on their grain size composition, clay and heavy mineral assemblages, and distribution of a large group of chemical elements are presented. Radiocarbon dates based on AMS C-14 method suggest the Holocene age of sediments in the cores. Literature data on physical properties and foraminifers have also been analyzed. The facies affiliation of the lithostratigraphic subdivisions has been unraveled. History of the Yenisei River runoff in the Holocene has been reconstructed on the basis of different indicators.

Results of primary production measurements obtained by different methods are presented. These methods are radiocarbon and oxygen modifications of the flask method, as well as fluorometric procedure with a PrimProd submersible probing fluorometer (produced at the Biological Department, Moscow State University). The research was carried out during a complex expedition aboard R/V Akademik Boris Petrov to the Norwegian Sea in July, 1977. Distributions of primary production values measured by different methods were correlated with other oceanographic data. Then a comparison of obtained values by the above-mentioned methods was performed.

A description is given of a gamma-ray spectrometer complex consisting of four interchangeable, low-background NaI(Tl) crystals that operate simultaneously. The system is used in determination of concentrations of natural radioactive elements and sedimentation rates of bottom sediments by the ionium method. Three detector sizes are used, depending on amount of material available: 80x80; 100x100, and 150x150. The system is operated clockwise and data are brought out on a punch tape; results are computer-processed. Examples are shown of the complex use in determining sedimentation rates of bottom sediments in the Southeast Pacific and concentrations of natural radioactive elements in DSDP Hole 381.

Core PSh-2510 (4.76 m long) recovered mud and clay of the Baltic Ice Lake and of all subsequent stages of the Baltic Sea. Grain size, mineral and chemical compositions, as well as physical properties of sediments were studied. Biostratigraphic (diatoms and foraminifers), lithostratigraphic, and chemical (26 elements) methods, as well as radiocarbon datings were used to subdivide core sections into stratigraphic units.
