Responses by marine species to ocean acidification (OA) have recently been shown to be modulated by external factors including temperature, food supply and salinity. However the role of a fundamental biological parameter relevant to all organisms, that of body size, in governing responses to multiple stressors has been almost entirely overlooked. Recent consensus suggests allometric scaling of metabolism with body size differs between species, the commonly cited 'universal' mass scaling exponent (b) of ¾ representing an average of exponents that naturally vary. One model, the Metabolic-Level Boundaries hypothesis, provides a testable prediction: that b will decrease within species under increasing temperature. However, no previous studies have examined how metabolic scaling may be directly affected by OA. We acclimated a wide body-mass range of three common NE Atlantic echinoderms (the sea star Asterias rubens, the brittlestars Ophiothrix fragilis and Amphiura filiformis) to two levels of pCO2 and three temperatures, and metabolic rates were determined using closed-chamber respirometry. The results show that contrary to some models these echinoderm species possess a notable degree of stability in metabolic scaling under different abiotic conditions; the mass scaling exponent (b) varied in value between species, but not within species under different conditions. Additionally, we found no effect of OA on metabolic rates in any species. These data suggest responses to abiotic stressors are not modulated by body size in these species, as reflected in the stability of the metabolic scaling relationship. Such equivalence in response across ontogenetic size ranges has important implications for the stability of ecological food webs.

Two planktonic foraminiferal oxygen isotope records of ODP Hole 653A (Tyrrhenian Sea) are presented for the time period extending from approximately 0.8 to 3.0 Ma. Six, generally accepted, synchronous bioevents were used to precise the oxygen isotope chronology and to identify the oxygen isotope stages 22 down to 114. Subsequently, this oxygen isotope chronology was used to determine the synchronism or diachronism of various other biostratigraphic events with those recorded in the Singa and Ficarazzi land sections (Italy) and those in other DSDP/ODP sites. New results concern the diachronity of the FOD of the planktonic foraminiferal species N. atlantica, G.truncatulinoides truncatulinoides and G. inflata between ODP Hole 653A and the Italian landsections. Because many species entered the Mediterranean in short term fluxes, strongly related to the southward migration of cool North Atlantic surface waters, their time distribution through the Pliocene-Pleistocene generally corresponds to alternated intervals of presence and absence. This should explain most of the apparently diachronous appearances and disappearances. Alternating presence-absence patterns are of less importance for the various nannofossil events. The LOD of D. surculus occurs during the transition of stage 100 to 101 in both ODP Hole 653A and the Singa section, which is in perfect agreement with the disappearance of this species from the open ocean. The LOD of D. pentaradiatus in the Mediterranean occurs in stages 100-99, which seems to be consistent with the extinction of this species in the southern Hemisphere. G. oceanica, which corresponds to the 4 µm < Gephyrocapsa spp <5.5 µm is recorded in stages 65 to 64 at ODP Hole 653A. The Gephyrocapsa spp. >5.5 µm first occurred in stage 51 at Hole 653A, which fits within the uncertainty interval for this event stretching from stage 51 to 47 in the open ocean and seems therefore a useful tool for conventional biostratigraphy in the Mediterranean.

Dynamics of the Pacific Plate is recorded in the systematic variation of location and the 40Ar-39Ar age of seamounts in the Western Pacific from 120 to 65 Ma ago. The seamounts are grouped into three linear zones as long as 5000 km. The seamounts become younger in the southeastern direction along the strike of these zones. Correlation between age and location of seamounts allows to divide the history of their formation into three stages. Rate of seamount growth was relatively low (2-4 cm/yr) during the first and the third stages within intervals of 120-90 and 85-65 Ma, whereas during the second stage (90-85 Ma), the seamounts were growing very fast (80-100 cm/yr). In the midst of this stage, at ~87 Ma ago, magmatic activity increased abruptly. Dynamics of seamount building is in good agreement with (1) pulses in development of the Ontong Java, Manihiki, and Caribbean-Colombian oceanic plateaus; (2) age of spreading acceleration in the mid-Cretaceous; and (3) a short period when the Izanagi Plate ceased to exist and the Kula Plate was formed. Variation in seamounts' age and location are in consistence with the hypothesis of diffuse extension of the Pacific Plate in course of its motion with formation of impaired zones of decompression melting. Direction of extension (325°-340° NW) calculated from the strike of seamount zones is consistent with the path of the Pacific Plate (330° NW) in the Late Cretaceous. Immense perioceanic volcanic belts were formed at that time along the margin of the Asian continent. The Okhotsk-Chukchi Peninsula Belt extends at a right angle to the compression vector. Three stages of this belt's evolution are synchronous with the stages of seamount formation in the Pacific Plate. Delay in origination of the East Sikhote-Alin Volcanic Belt and its different orientation were caused by counterclockwise rotation of the vector of convergence of oceanic and continental plates in the mid-Cretaceous. At the same time, i.e. 95-85 Ma ago, volcanic activity embraced the entire continental margin and tin granites were emplaced everywhere in the Eastern Asia. This short episode (90+/-5 Ma) corresponds to the mid-Cretaceous maximum of compression of the continental margin, and its age fits well a culmination in extension of the Pacific Plate.

Oxygen- and carbon-isotope analyses have been performed on the Quaternary planktonic foraminifers of Sites 548 and 549 (DSDP Leg 80) to investigate major water mass changes that occurred in the northeastern Atlantic at different glacial-interglacial cycles and to compare them with the well-defined picture of 18,000 yr. ago. Oxygen-isotope stratigraphy also provides a chronological framework for the more important data on the fauna and flora. Although bioturbation and sedimentary gaps obliterate the climatic and stratigraphic record, general trends in the oceanographic history can be deduced from the isotopic data. Isotopic stratigraphy has tentatively been delineated down to isotopic Stage 16 at Site 548 and in Hole 549A. This stratigraphy fits well with that deduced from benthic foraminiferal d18O changes and with bioclimatic zonations based on foraminiferal associations at Site 549. Variations in the geographic extension and in the flux of the Gulf Stream subtropical waters are inferred from both d18O and d13C changes. Maximal fluxes occurred during the late Pliocene. Northward extension of subtropical waters increased through the various interglacial phases of the early Pleistocene and decreased through the late Pleistocene interglacial phases. Conversely, glacial maxima were more intense after Stage 16. Isotopic Stages 12 and 16 mark times of important change in water mass circulation. An almost complete Upper Cretaceous sedimentary sequence recently recovered on the Kerguelen Plateau (southern Indian Ocean) during ODP Leg 183 was analysed for planktonic foraminifera in order to refine and integrate the zonal schemes previously proposed for the Southern Ocean area. Detailed biostratigraphic analysis carried out on holes 1135A, 1136A and 1138A (poleward of 50°S palaeolatitude during Late Cretaceous time) has allowed recognition of low and mid-high latitude bioevents, useful for correlation across latitudes, in addition to known Austral bioevents. The low latitude biozonation can be applied to Turonian sediments, because of the occurrence of Helvetoglobotruncana helvetica, which marks the boundary between Whiteinella archaeocretacea and Helvetoglobotruncana helvetica zones. The base of the Whiteinella archeocretacea Zone falls within the uppermost Cenomanian-Turonian black shale level in Hole 1138A. The stratigraphic interval from upper Turonian to uppermost Santonian can be resolved using bioevents recognized in the mid-high latitude sections. They are, in stratigraphic order: the last occurrence of Falsotruncana maslakovae in the Coniacian, the first occurrence of Heterohelix papula at the Coniacian/Santonian boundary, the extinction of the marginotruncanids in the late Santonian, and the first occurrence of Globigerinelloides impensus in the latest (?) Santonian. The remainder of the Late Cretaceous fits rather well in the Austral zonal scheme, except that Globigerinelloides impensus exhibits a stratigraphic range in agreement with its record at the mid-high latitude sections and extends further downwards than previously recorded at southern sites. Therefore, despite the poor recovery in certain intervals and the presence of several hiatuses of local and regional importance as revealed by correlation among holes, a more detailed zonal scheme has been obtained (mainly for the less resolved Turonian-Santonian interval). Remarks on some species often overlooked in literature are also provided.

Hydrocarbons, sterols and alkenones were analyzed in samples collected from a 10 month sediment trap time series deployed in the Indian Ocean sector of the Southern Ocean. Fluxes and within-class distributions varied seasonally. During higher mass and organic carbon (OC) flux periods, which occurred in austral summer and fall, fresh marine inputs were predominant. Vertical fluxes were most intense in January, but limited to one week in duration. They were, however, low compared with other oceanic regions. In contrast, low mass and OC flux periods were characterized by a strong unresolved complex mixture (UCM) in the hydrocarbon fraction and a high proportion of stanols as a result of zooplanktonic grazing. Terrigenous inputs were not detectable. The alkenone compositions were consistent with previous data on suspended particles from Antarctic waters. However, UK'37 values diverged from the linear and exponential fits established by Sikes et al. (1997, doi:10.1016/S0016-7037(97)00017-3) in the low temperature range. The seasonal pattern of alkenone production implied that IPT (integrated production temperature) is likely to be strongly imprinted by austral summer and fall SST (sea surface temperature).

Drilling at Sites 534 and 603 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project recovered thick sections of Berriasian through Aptian white limestones to dark gray marls, interbedded with claystone and clastic turbidites. Progressive thermal demagnetization removed a normal-polarity overprint carried by goethite and/or pyrrhotite. The resulting characteristic magnetization is carried predominantly by magnetite. Directions and reliability of characteristic magnetization of each sample were computed by using least squares line-fits of magnetization vectors. The corrected true mean inclinations of the sites suggest that the western North Atlantic underwent approximately 6° of steady southward motion between the Berriasian and Aptian stages. The patterns of magnetic polarity of the two sites, when plotted on stratigraphic columns of the pelagic sediments without turbidite beds, display a fairly consistent magnetostratigraphy through most of the Hauterivian-Barremian interval, using dinoflagellate and nannofossil events and facies changes in pelagic sediment as controls on the correlations. The composite magnetostratigraphy appears to include most of the features of the M-sequence block model of magnetic anomalies from Ml to Ml ON (Barremian-Hauterivian) and from M16 to M23 (Berriasian-Tithonian). The Valanginian magnetostratigraphy of the sites does not exhibit reversed polarity intervals corresponding to Ml 1 to M13 of the M-sequence model; this may be the result of poor magnetization, of a major unrecognized hiatus in the early to middle Valanginian in the western North Atlantic, or of an error in the standard block model. Based on these tentative polarity-zone correlations, the Hauterivian/Barremian boundary occurs in or near the reversed-polarity Chron M7 or M5, depending upon whether the dinoflagellate or nannofossil zonation, respectively, is used; the Valanginian/Hauterivian boundary, as defined by the dinoflagellate zonation, is near reversed-polarity Chron M10N.

Modern scleractinian corals are classical components of marine shallow warm water ecosystems. Their occurrence and diversity patterns in the geological record have been widely used to infer past climates and environmental conditions. Coral skeletal composition data reflecting the nature of the coral environment are often affected by diagenetic alteration. Ghost structures of annual growth rhythms are, however, often well preserved in the transformed skeleton. We show that these relicts represent a valuable source of information on growth conditions of fossil corals. Annual growth bands were measured in massive hemispherical Porites of late Miocene age from the island of Crete (Greece) that were found in patch reefs and level bottom associations of attached mixed clastic environments as well as isolated carbonate environments. The Miocene corals grew slowly, about 2-4 mm/yr, compatible with present-day Porites from high-latitude reefs. Slow annual growth of the Miocene corals is in good agreement with the position of Crete at the margin of the Miocene reef belt. Within a given time slice, extension rates were lowest in level bottom environments and highest in attached inshore reef systems. Because sea surface temperatures (SSTs) can be expected to be uniform within a time slice, spatial variations in extension rates must reflect local variations in light levels (low in the level bottom communities) and nutrients (high in the attached reef systems). During the late Miocene (Tortonian-early Messinian), maximum linear extension rates remained remarkably constant within seven chronostratigraphic units, and if the relationship of SSTs and annual growth rates observed for modern massive Indo-Pacific Porites spp. applies to the Neogene, minimum (winter) SSTs were 20°-21°C. Although our paleoclimatic record has a low resolution, it fits the trends revealed by global data sets. In the near future we expect this new and easy to use Porites thermometer to add important new information to our understanding of Neogene climate.

New K-Ar age determinations of basalt samples from three drill holes and outcrops on the Franz Josef Land suggest that flood volcanism throughout the archipelago fits in a very narrow age interval (116±5 Ma). For 95% of the samples we studied, age scatter is within analytical uncertainty. New data on basaltic bulk-rock, trace element, and REE compositions point to mantle plume affinity for Early Cretaceous magmatism on the Franz Josef Land, which preceded the onset of seafloor spreading in the Canada Basin.

Atmospheric PBDEs were measured on a monthly basis in 2002-2004 at Point Petre, a rural site in the Great Lakes. Average air concentrations were 7.0 ± 13 pg/m**3 for the sum of 14BDE (excluding BDE-209), and 1.8 ± 1.5 pg/m**3 for BDE-209. Concentrations of 3 dominant congeners (i.e., BDE-47, 99, and 209) were comparable to previous measurements at remote/rural sites around the Great Lakes, but much lower than those at urban areas. Weak temperature dependence and strong linear correlations between relatively volatile congeners suggest importance of advective inputs of gaseous species. The significant correlation between BDE-209 and 183 implies their transport inputs associated with particles. Particle-bound percentages were found greater for highly brominated congeners than less brominated ones. These percentages increase with decreasing ambient temperatures. The observed gas/particle partitioning is consistent with laboratory measurements and fits well to the Junge-Pankow model. Using air mass back-trajectories, atmospheric transport to Point Petre was estimated as 76% for BDE-47, 67% for BDE-99, and 70% for BDE-209 from west-northwest and southwest directions. During the same time period, similar congener profiles and concentration levels were found at Alert in the Canadian High Arctic. Different inter-annual variations between Point Petre and Alert indicate that emissions from other regions than North America could also contribute PBDEs in the Arctic. In contrast to weak temperature effect at Point Petre, significant temperature dependence in the summertime implies volatilization emissions of PBDEs at Alert. Meanwhile, episodic observations in the wintertime were likely associated with enhanced inputs through long-range transport during the Arctic Haze period.

The authigenic carbonate mineral ikaite is specific of low-temperature high latitude environments. The depletion of ikaite carbon in 13C isotopes in most cases implies a causal relation of ikaite generation with methane geochemistry. In this paper we present new data on ikaite minerals in Holocene sediments sampled along the Yenisei channel at the southern (74°N) and northern (77°N) ends. Stable carbon isotopes of the ikaite crystals were studied in conjunction with the hydrochemistry and isotope geochemistry of the sediments. Pore water and natural gas samples were separated from sediments to describe the methane carbon isotope distribution pattern throughout two sedimentary sequences embedding the ikaite crystals of different isotope composition (-24 per mil and -42 per mil). The biogenic nature of the methane is indicated by 51 C values being as low as -104.4 per mil. In the case of the moderately depleted sample (-24 per mil) from the southern location the small-scale ikaite formation fits best into the concept of a 'closed» sediment system, with a limited diagenetic carbon dioxide source being present. In the second case, formation of highly abundant and isotopically depleted ikaite crystals (-42 per mil) were caused by upwards flux of biogenic methane from below. Contribution of two main carbon sources to the ikaite crystals was estimated by using a isotope-mass balance equation. Organic-derived CO2 constitutes the principal source in both samples, amounting to 50 % of the total carbon of the strongly depleted ikaite crystals (-42 per mil) sampled at the northern end and 83 % for the moderately (-24 per mil) depleted crystals from the southern end. Methane-derived CO2 comes to 42 % for the isotopically light ikaite crystals and to 9% for the isotopically heavy crystals. The importance of sediment lithology and diffusive transport for ikaite formation is emphazied.

A 2 m.y. oxygen isotope record of Globigerinoides sacculifer from the Ontong Java Plateau, based on cores from Ocean Drilling Program Leg 130, is dated by matching variations to an orbital template. The procedure allows us to present the most complete Quaternary record available for the western equatorial Pacific. The template-generating algorithm describes a balance between growth and melting of ice. Following basic Milankovitch theory, ice growth is taken as constant, while melting is taken to depend on summer insolation, current ice mass, and average past ice mass. Template settings must be changed once, between 1 and 1.2 Ma, to reflect a major shift in climate. Template fits are strikingly good over much of the record and can be used to detect and fill gaps from core breaks and other disturbances. One result of template dating is an exact age for the Brunhes-Matuyama magnetic reversal boundary, at 790+/-5 ka, as well as several other precise dates (900 ka for the middle Pleistocene climate shift; 1070, 1240, and 1450 ka for isotope stages 31, 37, and 47, respectively). Sedimentation rates fluctuate between 18 and 28 m/m.y., a ca. 400 ka cycle being the most prominent. Major anomalies arise within the transitional regime (1.2 to 1 Ma). The origin of the cycles is unknown; we propose productivity variations in the western equatorial Pacific.
