Products of two mud volcanoes from the distal part of the Mediterranean Ridge accretionary complex have been investigated regarding their B, C, and O stable isotope signatures. The mud breccias have been divided into mud matrix, lithified clasts, biogenic deposits, and authigenic cements and crusts related to fluid flow and cementation. Isotope geochemistry is used to evaluate the depth of mobilization of each phase in the subduction zone. B contents and isotope ratios of the mud and mud clasts show a general trend of B enrichment and decreasing d11B values with increasing consolidation (i.e., depth). However, the majority of the clast and matrix samples relate to moderate depths of mobilization within the wedge (1-2 km below seafloor). The carbonate cements of most of these clasts as well as the authigenic crusts, however, provide evidence for a deep fluid influence, probably associated with the décollement at 5-6 km depth. This interpretation is supported by d13C ratios of the crust, which indicate precipitation of C from thermogenic methane, and by the d11B ratios of pore-water samples of mud-breccia drill cores. Clams (Vesicomya sp.) living adjacent to fluid vents have d11B and d18O values corresponding to brines known in the area, which acted as the parent solution for shell precipitation. Such brines are most likely Miocene pore waters trapped at deep levels within the backstop to the accretionary prism, probably prior to desiccation of the Mediterranean in the Messinian (6-5 Ma). Combining all results, deep fluid circulation and expulsion are identified as the main processes triggering mud liquefaction and extrusion, whereas brines contribute only locally. Given the high B contents, mud extrusion has to be considered a major backflux mechanism of B into the hydrosphere.

It is demonstrated by K-Ar analyses that the age of reversely magnetized basalts, which immediately predate magnetic Anomaly 24B, is 53.5 ± 1.9 m.y. Samples from deep levels appear to be grossly contaminated by an extraneous argon component with a uniform argon-40/argon-36 ratio 440. This component is thought to have been derived from fluids circulating in the lava pile during burial. The age result corroborates the assignment previously made to Anomaly 24B by Hailwood et al. (1979) and Lowrie and Alvarez (1981). It additionally suggests that lava extrusion formed part of a much larger magmatic event, which affected wide areas of the North Atlantic margins around the Paleocene/Eocene boundary, and can therefore probably be considered a good estimate of the age of this boundary. Initial 143Nd/144Nd ratios lie in the very restricted range 0.512920 ± 19 to 0.513026 ± 24 and initial 8 7Sr/86Sr ratios from ca. 0.703 to ca. 0.705. Acid leaching reduces the latter range to 0.70264 ± 4 to 0.70384 ± 4, suggesting that the higher 87Sr/86Sr ratios resulted from interaction with seawater. The array of data for treated samples is closely conformable on a 143Nd/144Nd-87Sr/86Sr diagram with the main oceanic mantle array and with previously published fields for Atlantic Ocean basalts. No evidence for any continental crustal contamination has been found. This suggests, but does not prove, that continental crust played no part in the genesis of these rocks.

Oxygen isotope analyses of Tertiary and Cretaceous planktic foraminifera indicate that species have been stratified with respect to depth in the water column at least since Albian time. There is a relationship between morphology and depth habitat. Species with globigerine morphology have consistently occupied shallower depths than have species with globorotalid morphology. Biserially arranged species occupied both shallow and deep levels in the water column. On the average, it appears that ancient species with shallow habitats have been more susceptible to dissolution and have been preserved less well than species dwelling in deeper habitats. This relationship is similar to that observed for Recent planktic foraminifera. Comparison of carbon isotope ratios of adult and juvenile forms indicates that either the source of the carbon found in the shell or the carbon isotopic fractionations which occur during calcite secretion change during the development of individual foraminifera. The carbon isotopic ratios do not provide a reliable means for reconstructing the depth habitats of ancient species. Temperature-depth profiles for tropical Tertiary oceans have been reconstructed from the isotopic temperatures of planktic and benthic foraminifera. The vertical thermal structure of Oligocene oceans resembled that of modern oceans most closely. Those of Paleocene and Maastrichtian times differed most from that of modern oceans.

The PS2644 deep-sea core sequence, retrieved from the northwestern margin of Iceland and covering the last 86 ka, exhibits high sedimentation rates during the last glacial cycle that allow the clear distinction of Greenland stadial (GS)/ interstadial (GI) cycles in the various proxy records. Abundance records of rhyolitic, basaltic and tachylytic tephra grains reveal several maxima. Tephra grains of all types were geochemically analyzed in 44 levels. A total of 92 tephras with a distinctive character have been defined within the glacial sequence of gravity core PS2644-5, whereas the Holocene record is dominated by reworked Vedde Ash grains and not suitable for tephra stratigraphic work. Of the 92 tephras only 19 geochemical populations have been linked with confidence to previously defined tephras such as from the Vedde Ash, Faeroe Marine Ash Zones (FMAZ) II and III and North Atlantic Ash Zone (NAAZ) II. For the glacial period informal names were given to 78 new tephras, most of which are basaltic tephras. Several of these layers have a unique geochemical character and might become new chronostratigraphic markers in the North Atlantic region. Linking the tephra populations to the volcanic system producing them, respectively, revealed that Icelandic eruptions dominate with 83 tephra geochemical populations and Jan Mayen with 9. Around 48% of the informal tephra layers linked to the Icelandic volcanic province are produced from either the Grimsvötn or the Veidivötn-Bardarbunga volcanic systems. The intervals spanning from Greenland Stadial (GS) 3 to Greenland Interstadial (GI) 4 (24.5-29 ka BP), from GI 8 to GS 10 (36.9-40.5 ka BP) and from GI 14 to GI 15.2 (50-56 ka BP) are the periods with the highest number of eruptions, all of which are associated with known tephra zones.

Nineteen chert samples from a continuous core of the DSDP (Leg 17, Hole 167) were analysed for Ge; in addition we analysed five samples from other cores. The ages range between Late Jurassic, and Late Eocene. The concentration of Ge changes with age from 0.87 ppm in the oldest samples to 0.23 ppm in the youngest (equivalent to a Ge/Si decrease from 0.00000072 to 0.00000019). The decrease in Ge/Si is well correlated with the 87Sr/86Sr ratio in sea water of the relevant age. The interpretation of this trend may reflect: (a) different levels of Ge/Si in sea water as a result of a different ratio between hydrothermal and riverine input, (b) a diagenetic trend in siliceous sediments, (c) recording (by radiolaria) a transition between a radiolaria dominated ocean (with relatively high Ge/Si ratios in sea water) and diatom domination or (d) a combination of the above.

Antipatharia are a diverse group of corals with many species found in deep water. Many Antipatharia are habitat for associates, have extreme longevity and some species can occur beyond 8500 m depth. As they are major constituents of 'coral gardens', which are Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems (VMEs), knowledge of their distribution and environmental requirements is an important pre-requisite for informed conservation planning particularly where the expense and difficulty of deep-sea sampling prohibits comprehensive surveys. This study uses a global database of Antipatharia distribution data to perform habitat suitability modelling using the Maxent methodology to estimate the global extent of black coral habitat suitability. The model of habitat suitability is driven by temperature but there is notable influence from other variables of topography, surface productivity and oxygen levels. This model can be used to predict areas of suitable habitat, which can be useful for conservation planning. The global distribution of Antipatharia habitat suitability shows a marked contrast with the distribution of specimen observations, indicating that many potentially suitable areas have not been sampled, and that sampling effort has been disproportionate to shallow, accessible areas inside marine protected areas (MPAs). Although 25% of Antipatharia observations are located in MPAs, only 7-8% of predicted suitable habitat is protected, which is short of the Convention on Biological Diversity target to protect 10% of ocean habitats by 2020.

Continuous late Neogene planktonic foraminiferal records have been studied in the deep-sea cores of DSDP Sites 173, 310, and 296 across mid-latitudes of the North Pacific. These three sites have been correlated on the basis of planktonic foraminiferal events and major paleoclimatic/paleoceanographic intervals and tied to diatom, radiolarian, and nannofossil datum levels, and paleomagnetic and isotopic stratigraphy. Ten planktonic foraminiferal datum levels have been recognized within these Pliocene to Pleistocene sections; two of these are recognizable within the Pleistocene and eight within the Pliocene. Six planktonic foraminiferal zones are proposed which combined with the foraminiferal datum levels provide a high resolution biostratigraphic correlation for the mid-latitudes of the North Pacific.

This paper contains magnetobiostratigraphic correlation charts for each of the four sites occupied during DSDP Leg 72. Microfossil zonal boundaries and magnetic polarity determinations for Sites 515 through 518 are summarized in Figures 1 through 4, respectively. Our discussion focuses on the correlations derived for the Paleogene and late Cretaceous (Coniacian-Maestrichtian) of Site 516, because of the value of this site as a stratigraphic reference section for the South Atlantic.

Thick sections of Pliocene and Pleistocene biosiliceous clay and ooze were recovered by the Hydraulic Piston Corer (I-IPC) at three northwest Pacific sites (DSDP Sites 578, 579, and 580). They contain a well-preserved paleomagnetic record which made it possible to evaluate diatom events used in low and high latitudes in the transitional region of the northwest Pacific. Equatorial Pacific events are usually isochronons between the equatorial and subarctic regions. However, species which have short ranges in low latitudes tend to have diachronous first and last appearances in higher latitudes. All subarctic North Pacific datum species are present in the sediments at three sites which lie north and south across the subarctic front, but their ranges become shorter in southern regions. They do not penetrate into the equatorial region. Spatial distributions of these events are influenced by the paleo-position of the subarctic front. The migration of species from their home-area outwards, in the form of the first appearance, is related to the fluctuations of the subarctic front. The last appearance of species is a response to the change of the surface water temperature that is beyond the limit of tolerance of the species, or an unstable oceanic environment due to major change of climate.

Interstitial waters and sediments from DSDP sites 288 and 289 contain information on the chemistry and diagenesis of carbonate in deep-sea sediments and on the role of volcanic matter alteration processes. Sr/Ca ratios are species dependent in unaltered foraminifera from site 289 and atom ratios (0.0012-0.0016) exceed those predicted by distribution coefficent data (~0.0004). During diagenesis Sr/Ca ratios of carbonates decrease and reach the theoretical distribution at a depth which is identical to the depth of Sr isotopic equilibration, where 87Sr/86Sr ratios of interstitial waters and carbonates converge. Mg/Ca ratios in the carbonates do not increase with depth as found in some other DSDP sites, possibly because of diagenetic re-equilibration with interstitial waters showing decreasing Mg(2+)/Ca(2+) ratios with depth due to Ca input and Mg removal by alteration of volcanic matter. Interstitial 18O/16O ratios increase with depth at site 289 to d18O = 0.67? (SMOW), reflecting carbonate recrystallization at elevated temperatures (>/= 20°C), the first recorded evidence of this effect in interstitial waters. Interstitial Sr2+ concentrations reach high levels, up to 1 mM, chiefly because of carbonate recrystallization. However, 87Sr/86Sr ratios decrease from 0.7092 to less than 0.7078, lower than for contemporaneous sea water, showing that there is a volcanic input of strontium at depth. This volcanic component is recorded in the Sr isotopic composition of recrystallized calcites. Isotopic compositions of the unrecrystallized calcites suggests that the rate of increase of the 87Sr/86Sr ratio of sea water with time has been faster since 3 my ago than in the preceding 13 my.

A standard biostratigraphic system, based upon diatom datum levels previously correlated to the paleomagnetic record, was applied to Deep Sea Drilling Project Sites 501/504 and 505. Sedimentation appears to have been constant at the three sites, averaging 50 m/m.y. at Sites 501/504 and 60 m/m.y. at Site 505. Calcium carbonate is rather poorly preserved at both sites, because of depth of water and, at Sites 501/504, alteration by diagenesis. Siliceous microfossils are common and moderately well preserved at the three sites; at Sites 501/504, diatoms disappear abruptly below the first occurrence of chert. The uppermost Miocene diatom assemblage occurs just above chert and is characterized by a strong dominance of Thalassionema and Thalassiothrix, which implies very high silica production during the latest Miocene; the chert probably is derived from a similar assemblage. In the earliest Pliocene, silica production appears to have decreased sharply; about 3 Ma, preservation of calcium carbonate also diminished, suggesting a shoaling of the CCD. At 2 Ma, there occurred a short interval of low production of both calcium carbonate and silica, which lasted into the earliest Pleistocene.
