Mineralogic, petrographic, and geochemical analyses of sediments recovered from two Leg 166 Ocean Drilling Program cores on the western slope of Great Bahama Bank (308 m and 437 m water depth) are used to characterize early marine diagenesis of these shallow-water, periplatform carbonates. The most pronounced diagenetic products are well-lithified intervals found almost exclusively in glacial lowstand deposits and interpreted to have formed at or near the seafloor (i.e., hardgrounds). Hardground cements are composed of high-Mg calcite (~14 mol% MgCO3), and exhibit textures typically associated with seafloor cementation. Geochemically, hardgrounds are characterized by increased d18O and Mg contents and decreased d13C, Sr, and Na contents relative to their less lithified counterparts. Despite being deposited in shallow waters that are supersaturated with the common carbonate minerals, it is clear that these sediments are also undergoing shallow subsurface diagenesis. Calculation of saturation states shows that pore waters become undersaturated with aragonite within the upper 10 m at both sites. Dissolution, and likely recrystallization, of metastable carbonates is manifested by increases in interstitial water Sr and Sr/Ca profiles with depth. We infer that the reduction in mineral saturation states and subsequent dissolution are being driven by the oxidation of organic matter in this Fe-poor carbonate system. Precipitation of burial diagenetic phases is indicated by the down-core appearance of dolomite and corresponding decrease in interstitial water Mg, and the presence of low-Mg calcite cements observed in scanning electron microscope photomicrographs.

Oxygen and carbon isotopes have been determined from Late Jurassic (Oxfordian-Tithonian) belemnites and inoceramid bivalves from two Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) sites located on the Falkland Plateau. Mean belemnite delta18O values, derived from well preserved skeletal material, were -1.29? from DSDP site 330 and -1.45? from DSDP site 511. Assuming a seawater SMOW value of -1.0?, mean palaeotemperatures calculated from the oxygen isotopic composition are 17.2°C and 17.9°C, respectively. The inoceramid bivalves yielded much lighter delta18O values (mean -3.58?). Petrographic and geochemical evidence points to the inoceramid bivalves being altered by diagenesis which accordingly accounts for the observed differences in isotopic values. "Vital effects" or the importation of belemnites or inocerarnids from another area, are considered not to account for the observed isotopic trends. The palaeotemperatures interpreted from the belemnites are significantly warmer than other recent estimates of Late Jurassic temperature (from oxygen isotope studies and climate model predictions) from similar southern palaeolatitudes. We suspect our apparent warmer temperatures are because of a combination of increased freshwater runoff depleting surface waters with respect to delta18O and related to the semi-enclosed nature of the depositional basin retaining warmth, relative to the open ocean of similar latitudes.

Acoustic estimates of herring and blue whiting abundance were obtained during the surveys using the Simrad ER60 scientific echosounder. The allocation of NASC-values to herring, blue whiting and other acoustic targets were based on the composition of the trawl catches and the appearance of echo recordings. To estimate the abundance, the allocated NASC -values were averaged for ICES-squares (0.5° latitude by 1° longitude). For each statistical square, the unit area density of fish (rA) in number per square nautical mile (N*nm-2) was calculated using standard equations (Foote et al., 1987; Toresen et al., 1998). To estimate the total abundance of fish, the unit area abundance for each statistical square was multiplied by the number of square nautical miles in each statistical square and then summed for all the statistical squares within defined subareas and over the total area. Biomass estimation was calculated by multiplying abundance in numbers by the average weight of the fish in each statistical square then summing all squares within defined subareas and over the total area. The Norwegian BEAM soft-ware (Totland and Godø 2001) was used to make estimates of total biomass.

Between 1999 and 2001, a 724 m long ice core was drilled on Akademii Nauk, the largest glacier on Severnaya Zemlya, Russian Arctic. The drilling site is located near the summit. The core is characterized by high melt-layer content. The melt layers are caused by melting and even by rain during the summer. We present high-resolution data of density, electrical conductivity (dielectrical profiling), stable water isotopes and melt-layer content for the upper 136 m (120 m w.e.) of the ice core. The dating by isotopic cycles and electrical conductivity peak identification suggests that this core section covers approximately the past 275 years. Singularities of volcanogenic and anthropogenic origin provide well-defined additional time markers. Long-term temperatures inferred from 12 year running mean averages of d18O reach their lowest level in the entire record around 1790. Thereafter the d18O values indicate a continuously increasing mean temperature on the Akademii Nauk ice cap until 1935, interrupted only by minor cooling episodes. The 20th century is found to be the warmest period in this record.
