There are substantial differences in the character of organic matter contained in the Pleistocene and Cretaceous sedimentary sequences of DSDP Site 535. The argillaceous Pleistocene section contains type III, gas-prone organic matter whereas the calcareous Cretaceous section is dominated by type II, oil-prone organic matter. A more detailed investigation of the Cretaceous section reveals that the finely laminated limestones of Valanginian to Barremian age are of good to excellent source quality. The indigenous organic matter contained within this organically rich section is thermally immature, not having undergone sufficient thermal diagenesis for the generation and expulsion of hydrocarbons. Within this stratigraphic section, however, staining by mature hydrocarbons was detected. These stains are associated with a fractured interval. These fractures may in turn represent potential migration pathways.

A summary of shipboard Rock-Eval measurements shows that organic matter in Upper Triassic siltstone from the Wombat Plateau is dominated by Type III kerogen and is thermally immature. Neocomian siltstone from the Exmouth Plateau similarly contain thermally immature Type III organic matter. Overlying Upper Cretaceous to Quaternary carbonates are poor in organic matter at both locations, yet significant amounts of methane-dominated gas are dissolved in the pore waters of the thick carbonate sequence present on the Exmouth Plateau. This dry gas is believed to have migrated from deeper and more mature strata containing Type III kerogen.

Acoustic and pelagic trawl data were collected during various pelagic surveys carried out by IFREMER in May between 2000 and 2012 (except 2001), on the eastern continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay (Pelgas series). The acoustic data were collected with a Simrad EK60 echosounder operating at 38 kHz (beam angle at -3 dB: 7°, pulse length set to 1.024 ms). The echosounder transducer was mounted on the vessel keel, at 6 m below the sea surface. The sampling design were parallel transects spaced 12 nm apart which were orientated perpendicular to the coast line from 20 m to about 200 m bottom depth. The nominal sailing speed was 10 knots and 3 knots on average during fishing operations. The scrutinising (species identification) of acoustic data was done by first characterising acoustic schools by type and then linking these types with the species composition of specific trawl hauls. The data set contains nautical area backscattering values, biomass and abundance estimates for blue whiting for one nautical mile long transect lines. Expanding visitation to Polar regions combined with climate warming increases the potential for alien species introduction and establishment. We quantified vascular plant propagule pressure associated with different groups of travelers to the high-Arctic archipelago of Svalbard, and evaluated the potential of introduced seeds to germinate under the most favorable average Svalbard soil temperature (10°C). We sampled the footwear of 259 travelers arriving by air to Svalbard during the summer of 2008, recording 1,019 seeds: a mean of 3.9 (±0.8) seeds per traveler. Assuming the seed influx is representative for the whole year, we estimate a yearly seed load of around 270,000 by this vector alone. Seeds of 53 species were identified from 17 families, with Poaceae having both highest diversity and number of seeds. Eight of the families identified are among those most invasive worldwide, while the majority of the species identified were non-native to Svalbard. The number of seeds was highest on footwear that had been used in forested and alpine areas in the 3 months prior to traveling to Svalbard, and increased with the amount of soil affixed to footwear. In total, 26% of the collected seeds germinated under simulated Svalbard conditions. Our results demonstrate high propagule transport through aviation to highly visited cold-climate regions and isolated islands is occurring. Alien species establishment is expected to increase with climate change, particularly in high latitude regions, making the need for regional management considerations a priority.
