Observation of manganese nodules and crusts in the Blake Plateau area

In late June and July, 1967, the Deep Submergence Research Vehicle (DSRV) ALVIN, aboard its mother ship, LULU, proceeded from the spring base of operations, Nassau, to its home port of Woods Hole. During this trip, from July 2 to July 14, a series of five dives were made by ALVIN on the Blake Plateau off Georgia and South Carolina, and on the continental slope north of Cape Hatteras. One of the objectives of the dive was to investigate the manganese and phosphate deposits of the Blake Plateau.

Abundance of plankton in the upper 200 m layer in tropical oligotrophic regions of the Pacific and Indian Oceans

Quantitative distribution of plankton (mostly mesoplankton) is studied in the upper 200 m layer of oligotrophic waters in tropical anticyclonic gyres of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Some general features of its trophic and taxonomic structures and vertical distribution are described.

Abundance of picophytoplankton in the Subantarctic and subtropical frontal zones was found to be 10**6-10**7 cells/l. Biomass of eucaryotes and procaryotes reached 2 g/m**2 and accounted for 1-15% of total phytoplankton biomass. A deep peak in the distribution of phytoplankton abundance was found at 40-120 m. Maximum number of dividing cyanobacteria cells occurred at depths of 40-60 m. An estimate of picophytoplankton production shows that picophytoplankton accounts for 30-40% of total primary production.
