Titanomagnetites separated from 15 different rock samples (including ocean-floor basalts from DSDP Legs 37, 45 and 46) were analyzed together with whole-rock samples by instrumental neutron-activation analysis for Sc, Cr, Co, Zn, Hf, Ta, Th and the REE La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Tm, Yb and Lu. In titanomagnetities from ocean-floor basalts and some other rocks, REE are enriched with respect to the whole-rock composition by factors of between 1.5 and 3 for light REE and between 1.0 and 1.9 for heavy REE; that is, REE with larger ionic radii are preferentially incorporated into the magnetite lattice. Three magnetite samples are REE depleted. Their whole-rock samples contain P in appreciable amounts, so apatite, an important REE-accumulating mineral, could have captured REE to some extent. All titanomagnetites show a marked negative Eu anomaly, this is most probably caused by discrimination of Eu(2+) from the magnetite lattice. Co, Zn, Hf and Ta are significantly enriched in magnetites. The distribution behaviour of Sc and Cr is masked chiefly by the crystallization of clinopyroxene and therefore is not easy to estimate. Ulvöspinel contents of about 70% for the titanomagnetites from ocean-floor basalts were estimated from qualitative microprobe analysis. Ulvöspinel contents of all other samples varied in a wide range from 20% to about 90%. No correlation could be observed between this and the REE contents of the magnetites. Ilmenite exsolution lamellae could only be observed in titanomagnetites from a doleritic basalt from Leg 45.

Analyses of Pb from mid-ocean ridge basalts obtained from DSDP Leg 37 lie on a line of near-zero-age slope. The data seem consistent with an evolutionary model of three stages, the beginning of the second stage being at about 600 m.y. - the model age obtained for the least radiogenic Pb. The beginning of the third stage of evolution at the time of formation of the rocks apparently did not change the average Th/U ratio since measured values are consistent with the ratio deduced from Pb isotope ratios. Ratios of U/Pb are not consistent with Pb isotope ratios, however, thus ruling out a simple two-stage evolutionary model.

For Middle Jurassic to Pleistocene times, clay mineralogical and geochemical data provide information on the evolution of continental and marine paleoenvironments. They are a source of information on marginal instability, on the continental and shallow marine environments related to the development of the Southern Ocean during the Middle and Late Jurassic, and on tectonic relaxation of the continental margins at the end of the Late Jurassic. They also provide evidence for the influences of the South Atlantic opening and the movement of the Falkland Plateau in a reduced marine environment until Aptian-Albian times, and the transition to an open marine environment during Albian time; the influences of the Albian-Turonian and Coniacian-Santonian Andean deformations in an open marine environment; the limited tectonic effects and strong influence of marine currents at the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary; the influences of the global climatic cooling and inferred bottom water circulation during the late Eocene and Oligocene; the widening of the South Atlantic Ocean during Oligocene time, which was accompanied by an increased influence of the biogenic components on sedimentation; increased carbonate dissolution from late Oligocene to early Miocene, related to the deepening of the ocean; limited mineralogical and important geochemical modifications when the Drake Passage opened in the early Miocene; the influence of the late Miocene development of the Antarctic ice-sheet; the major Antarctic cooling and Patagonian glaciation during Pliocene time; and the change in the Antarctic Bottom Water circulation at the Pliocene/Pleistocene boundary.

Planktonic foraminiferal census counts were converted to sea surface temperature (SST) estimates using the modern analogue technique (MAT) for the middle-late Pliocene (4.0-2.37 Ma) in ODP Site 1125, north side of Chatham Rise, SW Pacific Ocean. MAT SST(warm) records range between 8°C and 20.5°C, and MAT SST(cold) records parallel that pattern but with a temperature range of 5-15°C. The modern position of Site 1125 is just north of the Subtropical Front and has an annual temperature range of ~14-18°C. Pliocene warmest temperatures are 1-2° warmer than modern summers, whereas cold season SST records are up to 6-10°C cooler than modern winters. Overall average temperatures at the site are 2-3°C cooler than modern temperatures during a time of sustained global warmth. Three major cold excursions centred on 3.35, 3.0, and 2.8 Ma showed warm season temperatures over 5°C colder than the last glacial maximum, experiencing temperatures typical of modern subantarctic waters. Two minor cold excursions at 2.7 Ma and 2.4 Ma experienced temperatures cooler than modern winters but not as cold as last glacial conditions. Cold season SSTs show a shift to warmer climate upward through the study interval, whereas warm season estimates remain essentially unchanged. We interpret the strong regional cooling of subtropical Southwest Pacific water through the middle-late Pliocene as having been caused by increased upwelling. It is also possible that the subtropical frontal zone moved north over the site in the Pliocene, however, this is considered the least likely interpretation. Our record of cool conditions in the Southwest Pacific corroborate evidence of cooler than modern conditions in other regions of the western Pacific through the mid-Pliocene despite overall global warming.

We present a 15 kyr sea surface temperature (SST) record for a high sedimentation rate core (KNR51-29GGC) from the Feni Drift off of Ireland, based on an organic geochemical technique for paleotemperature estimation, U37 K'. We compare the U37 K' temperature record to planktonic foraminiferal delta18O and foraminiferal assemblage SST estimates from the same sample horizons. U37 K' gives SST estimates of 13°C for the early deglacial and 18°C for the Holocene and Recent, whereas assemblages give estimates of 9°C and 13°C, respectively. As in nearby core V23-81, we find Ash Zone 1, the Younger Dryas increase in Neogloboquadrina pachyderma sinistral abundance, and maximum abundance of this species during glaciation. N. pachyderma dextral oxygen isotopic analyses have a late glacial to interglacial range of 1.5 per mil. A reduction of about 1 per mil in delta18O occurred at about 12 ka, whereas U37 K' and the foraminiferal fauna indicate a 2°C warming. This implies a 0.9 per mil salinity effect on delta18O which we attribute to meltwater freshening. All three parameters indicate cooling during the Younger Dryas. U37 K' SST estimates show that the major shift from deglacial to interglacial temperatures occurred after the Younger Dryas in termination 1b, in contrast to the assemblage data, which show this jump in SST at the end of the glaciation during termination Ia. Differences between the two SST estimators, which may result from their different (floral versus faunal) sources, are more pronounced between transitions Ia and Ib. This may reflect different habitats under the unusual sea surface conditions of the deglaciation.

Results of geochemical studies of organic matter in black shales from the Cape Verde Basin are reported. Based on these results, in combination with data of petrographic analysis, conclusions are made about sapropelic nature of their organic matter and low degree of its coalification. It corresponds to the proto-catagenetic substage of sedimentary rocks. Black shales of the Cape Verde Basin are classified as potential oil source strata.

Mr. John Murray, to whom the specimens of bottom deposits collected by the "Blake" were sent for examination, looked over the whole and selected some typical specimens. These have been described in detail, and he has added some general notes on the specimens characteristic, 1. of the Coast between the Gulf of Maine and Cape Hatteras; 2. of thee coast between Cape Hatteras and Lat. 31? 48' N.; 3. of the coasts around the greater and lesser Antilles ; and, finally, of the Gulf of Mexico and Straits of Florida.
