The isotopic characteristics of CH4 (d13C values range from -101.3 per mil to -61.1 per mil PDB, and dD values range from -256 per mil to -136 per mil SMOW) collected during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 164 indicate that the CH4 was produced by microbial CO2 reduction and that there is not a significant contribution of thermogenic CH4 to the sampled sediment gas from the Blake Ridge. The isotopic values of CO2 (d13C range -20.6 per mil to +1.24 per mil PDB) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC; d13C range -37.7 per mil to +10.8 per mil PDB) have parallel profiles with depth, but with an offset of 12.5 per mil. Distinct downhole variations in the carbon isotopic composition of CH4 and CO2 cannot be explained by closed-system fractionation where the CO2 is solely derived from the locally available sedimentary organic matter (d13C -2.0 per mil ± 1.4 per mil PDB) and the CH4 is derived from CO2 reduction. The observed isotopic profiles reflect the combined effects of upwards gas migration and decreased microbial activity with depth.

On the basis of analysis of satellite and field data collected in Russian Arctic Seas maps of distribution of primary production for different months of the vegetation period were compiled. These maps were used to estimate annual primary production of organic carbon: 55 million tons in the Barents Sea; about 20 million tons in the Kara Sea; 10-15 million tons in the Laptev Sea and in the East Siberian Sea, 42 million tons in the Chukchi Sea. In the central and eastern parts of the Barents Sea during the vegetation period values of primary production decreased by factor >5 (from >500 to <100 mg C/m**2/day). By reviewing results of studies with sediment traps vertical fluxes of organic carbon in different regions of the Arctic Basin were estimated. Significant temporal variability of Corg fluxes with maxima during phytoplankton blooms (by 830 mg C/m**2/day) was noted. Typical summer fluxes of Corg are 10-40 mg C/m**2/day in the southern Barents Sea, 1-10 mg C/m**2/day in the northern Barents Sea and in the Kara Sea, and up to 370 mg C/m**2/day in the zone of marginal filters of the Ob and Yenisey rivers.

A new electrothermal atomizer for use in direct determination of Ag, Bi, In, and Tl in marine, riverine, and aeolian particulate matter on membrane filters is described. A sample capsule and atomization cell are heated separately. That is why it is possible to separate and optimize decomposition of a sample, vaporization of elements and atomization of their vapors. Noise reduction and design, which localizes the vapors in a light absorption zone, decrease detection limits of these four elements by factor of at least 3 to 10. Some analytical results are given.

The stable carbon isotopic composition of the planktonic foraminifera Globigerinoides sacculifer and G. ruber (white) and sedimentary organic matter from the northern Gulf of Aqaba have been investigated to estimate changes in delta13CDIC in surface waters during the last 1,000 years. The high sedimentation rates at the core sites (about 54 cm/Kyear) provide high temporal resolution (~10 years). Recent sediments at the top of the cores reflect conditions younger than 1950. The delta13C records of the planktonic foraminifera from three multicores display similar trends, showing a uniform and consistent pattern before the 1750s, and a gradual decrease of approximately 0.63? over the last two centuries. This decrease seems to track the decrease of delta13CDIC in surface waters, which is mainly caused by the increase of anthropogenic input of 13C-depleted CO2 into the atmosphere. Similarly, a trend towards lighter values of the carbon isotopic composition of sedimentary organic matter (delta13Corg) during the last 200 years supports the interpretation obtained from the planktonic foraminiferal delta13C. Furthermore, direct measurements of seawater show that delta13C of the dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in the northern Gulf of Aqaba has decreased by about 0.44 per mil during the period 1979-2000. The average annual decrease is 0.021 per mil, which is similar to that observed globally. The delta13C values of planktonic foraminifera combined with organic matter delta13C from marine sediments are good indicators for reconstructing past changes in atmospheric CO2 concentrations from the northern Gulf of Aqaba.

A study was made of isotopic composition of carbon in lipids found in three samples of separate particulates and in eight bottom sediment samples collected in a from the Simushir Island towards the open Pacific Ocean. Average d13C of lipids from particulates was 2.3 per mil lower than one of sediments. Humic acids from sediments are the most isotopically heavy fraction (d13C = -21.2 per mil). Isotopic composition of carbon in lipids depended on their total content in samples and on composition of sediments. Formation of isotopically heavy lipids in the surface layer of sediments may be associated with biogeochemical resynthesis of humic acids.
