A dynamic crystallization study was undertaken to provide a framework for linking the textural variations observed in the Hole 648B lavas with the size and morphology of cooling units inferred from drilling and submersible observation. The textures produced in cooling rate experiments carried out using a Serocki lava (ALV-1690-20) are comparable to the groundmass textural characteristics of lavas from Serocki volcano. The results of the dynamic crystallization study provide a quantitative link between texture, cooling rate, and eruption temperature. The maximum half-width of cooling units estimated from textural characteristics is on the order of 3 m, a value consistent with constraints from drilling and submersible observation. Textural characteristics indicate that the temperature from which cooling began was slightly above the liquidus. The relation between cooling rate and texture are also tested on a drill core sample of basalt of similar composition from a 9-m-thick flow in DSDP Hole 396B.

The 11 frozen cores from the Mariana Trough area from Holes 452 through 455, 459B, 460, and 460A are characteristically low in organic carbon (less than 0.2%) and contain a predominance of n-alkanes within the saturates fraction. There is no odd-predominance of n-alkanes as is typical of immature recent sediments. However, recent sediments containing immature organic matter with normal distributions of n-alkanes {OEP1 approximately equal to 1) are characteristic of sediments derived from purely marine sources (Brooks, 1970; Powell and McKirdy, 1973; Tissot et al., 1975). This type of sediment is very rare. However, at least one case where an immature sediment contains an OEP of near 1 has been reported in samples similar to those reported herein - that is, the Cariaco Trench (Hunt, 1979).

A study was made of isotopic composition of carbon in lipids found in three samples of separate particulates and in eight bottom sediment samples collected in a from the Simushir Island towards the open Pacific Ocean. Average d13C of lipids from particulates was 2.3 per mil lower than one of sediments. Humic acids from sediments are the most isotopically heavy fraction (d13C = -21.2 per mil). Isotopic composition of carbon in lipids depended on their total content in samples and on composition of sediments. Formation of isotopically heavy lipids in the surface layer of sediments may be associated with biogeochemical resynthesis of humic acids.
