The Okinawa Trough (OT) in the East Asian continental margin is characterized by thick terrigenous sediment and ubiquitous volcanic-hydrothermal activities. In this study, the clays collected during IODP Expedition 331 to the middle OT (Iheya North Knoll) were analyzed for mineralogical and geochemical compositions. By comparing with the clays from the East China Sea shelf and surrounding rivers, we examine different clay origins. The hydrothermal field in the mid-OT is dominated by Mg-rich chlorite, while the recharge zone has clay mineral assemblages similar to the shelf and rivers, showing high content of illite, subordinate chlorite and kaolinite and scarce smectite. Compared to the terrigenous clays, the hydrothermal clays in the OT have high concentrations of Mg, Mn and Zr but low Fe, Na, K, Ca, Ba, Sr, P, Sc and Ti, while the hydrothermal clays in the mid-ocean ridge are relatively enriched in Fe and V and depleted in Al, Mg, Zr, Sc and Ti. Different fractionation patterns of rare earth elements also register in the terrigenous and hydrothermal clays, diagnostic of variable clay origins. We infer that the OT hydrothermal clay was primarily formed by the chemical alteration of detrital sediments subject to the hydrothermal fluids. The remarkably different compositions of hydrothermal clays between the sediment-rich back arc basin like OT and the sediment-starved ocean ridge suggest different physical and chemical processes of hydrothermal fluids and fluid-rock/sediment reactions under various geologic settings.

Dinoflagellate cysts were recovered throughout the Paleogene succession of Hole 647A, which contains an almost complete deep-water record of early Eocene through early late Oligocene sedimentation in the Labrador Sea. Dinoflagellate cyst biostratigraphy is in general accord with that provided by other microfossil groups and is consistent with a lower Eocene age, as determined by nannofossils, for basal sediments in Hole 647A. These sediments overlie oceanic crust of Chron 24 age. Dinocyst assemblages indicate outer neritic to oceanic conditions throughout, although the persistent occurrence of Wetzeliellaceae specimens in the lower Eocene suggests a greater influence from shelf environments during this time. Lower Eocene dinocyst assemblages are similar to coeval assemblages from the Rockall Plateau, but those from the middle to upper Eocene have mixed affinities and may be related to the intensification of the proto-Gulf Stream from middle Eocene time. Oligocene dinocyst assemblages suggest the influence of both arctic and North Atlantic wate rmasses at this site. The presence of protoperidineacean species in the upper Eocene and Oligocene may indicate increased availability of nutrients, perhaps related to increased upwelling or the effects of water-mass mixing. Productive samples are dominated by dinocysts and acritarchs, while sporomorphs are represented mainly by bisaccate pollen. Preservational differences within samples may reflect mixing of penecontemporaneous dinocyst populations during the Eocene, and all samples examined may have a considerable allochthonous component. Variability in relative abundance of many species during the Eocene may be related to fluctuating water-mass properties. A total 175 dinocyst and acritarch taxa were recorded from 53 productive samples from the Paleogene. Only one Paleogene sample was barren of palynomorphs. Of three Miocene samples processed, all were barren.

The tuna stomach database from AZTI-Tecnalia corresponds to 7 years of sampling from 2004 to 2011. Due to the absence of continuity in the different projects dealing with the feeding ecology of tunas, the sampling could not be performed every year for both species, and no sample was collected in 2008. However, the fish stomach content record contents composition - by prey weight - of 1525 albacore caught in the Bay of Biscay and surrounding waters of the North Atlantic Drift Region in 2005 (n=397), 2006 (n=196), 2007 (n=37), 2009 (n=95), 2010 (n=566) and 2011 (n=234) ; and of 686 bluefin tunas caught in the Southeastern Bay of Biscay in 2004 (n=32), 2005 (n=36), 2006 (n=3), 2009 (n=257), 2010 (n=233) and 2011 (n=125). Samples have been obtained from scientific research surveys (using a variety of different fishing gears), from commercial fisheries catches, from individual fish voluntarily sampled by recreational fishermen and from fish accidentally stranded on coastlines. Each predator is identified by an ID and its length and wet weight are given. In case the wet weight could not be measured, it was estimated through a length-weight relationship equation and is indicated in the comment for the Predator mass column. The total weight of each prey is given, as well as the weight of each prey taxonomic group in each stomach.
