Late Miocene to Holocene planktonic foraminifers from the subantarctic South Atlantic were investigated for their biostratigraphic and environmental significance. The calcareous planktonic microfauna are of low diversity and are very rare or absent at sites located below the CCD. The sediments recovered from Sites 703 and 704 on the Meteor Rise at about 47°S are useful for biostratigraphic and environmental studies. In the whole sequence 16 species or varieties of planktonic foraminifers were recognized. Two species occur in the uppermost Miocene. In the Pliocene the Globorotalia puncticulata population can be used to separate the early from the late Pliocene. The Pliocene/Quaternary boundary does not appear to be well distinguished in the foraminiferal assemblage. A faunal change noted at 2.5 Ma could correspond to the development of glaciation in the Northern Hemisphere and its Antarctic counterpart. At about 5.2 Ma the first increase in polar fauna near the Meteor Rise occurs. Two other cooling periods are indicated in these sequences at about 4 and 3 Ma. Moreover, the hydrologic environment became more productive at about 2.1 Ma and close to the Brunhes/Matuyama boundary.

Sr and Nd isotopic compositions have been measured on the lithic fraction of last climatic cycle sediments from the North Atlantic (~40°N/~60°N), in order to identify the origins of the particles. From the reconstruction of their transport pathways, we deduce the mechanisms that explain their distributions. The main source regions are the Canadian shield (mostly the area of Baffin Bay and western Greenland), the Scandinavian shield, the European region (British Isles and Bay of Biscay), and Iceland. We observe a significant glacial/interglacial contrast, characterized by a dominant Icelandic input via near-bottom transport by North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) during the interglacials and a largely continent-derived contribution of surface-transported, ice-rafted detritus (IRD) during the glacial period. During the last glacial period, the Heinrich events (abrupt, massive discharges of IRD) originated not only from the Laurentide ice sheet as heretofore envisioned but also from other sources. Three other major North Atlantic ice sheets (Fennoscandian, British Isles, and Icelandic) probably surged simultaneously, discharging ice and IRD into the North Atlantic. As opposed to theories implying a unique, Laurentide origin [Gwiazda et al., 1996 doi:10.1029/95PA03135] driven by an internal mechanism [MacAyeal, 1993 doi:10.1029/93PA02200], we confirm that the Icelandic and the Fennoscandian ice sheets also surged as recently proposed by other authors, and we here also distinguish a possible detrital contribution from the British Isles ice sheet. This pan-North Atlantic phenomenon thus requires a common regional, external forcing.

The calcareous nannofossil assemblages of Ocean Drilling Program Hole 963D from the central Mediterranean Sea have been investigated to document oceanographic changes in surface waters. The studied site is located in an area sensitive to large-scale atmospheric and climatic systems and to high- and low-latitude climate connection. It is characterized by a high sedimentation rate (the achieved mean sampling resolution is <70 years) that allowed the Sicily Channel environmental changes to be examined in great detail over the last 12 ka BP. We focused on the species Florisphaera profunda that lives in the lower photic zone. Its distribution pattern shows repeated abundance fluctuations of about 10-15%. Such variations could be related to different primary production levels, given that the study of the distribution of this species on the Sicily Channel seafloor demonstrates the significant correlation to productivity changes as provided by satellite imagery. Productivity variations were quantitatively estimated and were interpreted on the basis of the relocation of the nutricline within the photic zone, led by the dynamics of the summer thermocline. Productivity changes were compared with oceanographic, atmospheric, and cosmogenic nuclide proxies. The good match with Holocene master records, as with ice-rafted detritus in the subpolar North Atlantic, and the near-1500-year periodicity suggest that the Sicily Channel environment responded to worldwide climate anomalies. Enhanced Northern Hemisphere atmospheric circulation, which has been reported as one of the most important forcing mechanisms for Holocene coolings in previous Mediterranean studies, had a remarkable impact on the water column dynamics of the Sicily Channel.

Sediments from Ocean Drilling Program Site 1165 in the Indian Ocean sector of the Southern Ocean (off Prydz Bay) contain a series of layers that are rich in ice-rafted debris (IRD). Here we present evidence that IRD-rich layers at Site 1165 at 7, 4.8, and 3.5 Ma record short-lived, massive discharges of icebergs from Wilkes Land and Adélie Land, more than 1500 kilometers to the east of the depositional site. This distant source of icebergs is clearly defined by the presence of IRD hornblende grains with 40Ar/39Ar ages of 1200-1100 Ma and 1550-1500 Ma, ages that are not found on the East Antarctic continent in locations closer to Site 1165. This observation requires enormous amounts of detritus-carrying drifting icebergs, most likely in the form of large icebergs. These events probably reflect destabilization, surge, and break-up of ice streams on the Wilkes Land and Adélie Land margins of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet, in the vicinity of the low-lying Aurora and Wilkes Basins. They occurred under warming conditions, but each coast seems to have produced ice-rafting events independently, at different times. The data presented here constitute the first evidence of far-traveled icebergs from specific source areas around the East Antarctic perimeter. Launch of these icebergs may have happened during quite dramatic events, perhaps analogous to "Heinrich Events" in the North Atlantic.

Based on the data of synchronous observations of hydrophysical and biogeochemical parameters in the near-mouth and shallow-water areas of the northern Caspian in 2000-2001, the scale of spatiotemporal variability in the following characteristics of the water-bottom system was estimated (1) flow velocity and direction within vortex structures formed by the combined effect of wind, discharge current, and the presence of higher aquatic plants; (2) dependence of the spatial distribution of the content and composition of suspended particulate matter on the hydrodynamic regime of waters and development of phytoplankton; (3) variations in the grain-size, petrographic, mineralogical, and chemical compositions of the upper layer of bottom sediments at several sites in the northern Caspian related to the particular local combination of dominant natural processes; and (4) limits of variability in the group composition of humus compounds in bottom sediments. The acquired data are helpful in estimating the geochemical consequences of a sea level rise and during the planning of preventive environmental protection measures in view of future oil and gas recovery in this region.

At Holes 650A and 651 A, set respectively in the Marsili Basin and the Vavilov Basin, Pleistocene sediments (turbiditic inputs interbedded with essentially hemipelagic sediments) may show layers of mudrocks with moderate to strong induration. Except in the two samples from Hole 651 A, it seems that zeolite crystallization does not play a role in the induration phenomenon. This latter appears to result from in situ clay authigenesis. Secondary K-Fe beidellite or Fe-Mg beidellite form diagenetic growths and bridges between sedimented particles. Turbidites are rich in volcaniclastics (glass, pumices and other volcanogenic elements) but the induration phenomenon appears to be associated essentially with the occurrence of basaltic detritus. It is proposed that clay authigenesis results from low temperature alteration of basaltic fragments issued from Vavilov and probably Marsili seamounts in sediments isolated from seawater by overlying deposits.

The predictable in situ production of 230Th from the decay of uranium in seawater, and its subsequent removal by scavenging onto falling particles, provides a valuable tool for normalizing fluxes to the seafloor. We describe a new application, determination of the 232Th that dissolves in the water column and is removed to the seafloor. 232Th is supplied to the ocean in continental minerals, dissolution of which leads to a measurable standing stock in the water column. Sedimentary adsorbed 232Th/230Th ratios have the potential to provide a proxy for estimating the amount of dissolved material that enters the ocean, both today and in the past. Ten core top samples were treated with up to eight different leaching techniques in order to determine the best method for the separating adsorbed from lattice bound thorium. In addition, separate components of the sediments were analyzed to test whether clay dissolution was an important contribution to the final measurement. There was no systematic correlation between the strength of acid used in the leach and the measured 232Th/230Th ratios. In all cases clean foraminifera produced the same ratio as leaches on bulk sediment. In three out of five samples leaches performed on non-carbonate detritus in the <63 µm size fraction were also identical. Without additional water column data it is not yet clear whether there is a simple one to one correlation between the expected deep-water 232Th/230Th and that produced by leaching, especially in carbonate-rich sediments. However, higher ratios, and associated high 232Th adsorbed fluxes, were observed in areas with high expected detrital inputs. The adsorbed fraction was ~35-50% of the total 232Th in seven out of ten samples. Our 230Th normalized 232Th fluxes are reasonable by comparison to global estimates of detrital inputs to the ocean. In nine cases out of ten, the total 230Th-normalized 232Th flux is greater than predicted from the annual dust fall at each specific location, but lower than the average global detrital input from all sources.

The Cretaceous and Paleogene sediments recovered during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 207 can be divided into three broad modes of deposition: synrift clastics (lithologic Unit V), organic matter-rich, laminated black shales (Unit IV), and open-marine chalk and calcareous claystones (Units III-I). The aim of this study is to provide a quantitative geochemical characterization of sediments representing these five lithologic units. For this work we used the residues (squeeze cakes) obtained from pore water sampling. Samples were analyzed for bulk parameters (total inorganic carbon, total organic carbon, and S) and by X-ray fluorescence for major (Si, Ti, Al, Fe, Mn, Mg, Ca, Na, K, and P) and selected minor (As, Ba, Co, Cr, Cu, Mo, Ni, Pb, Rb, Sr, U, V, Y, Zn, and Zr) elements. Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry analyses for rare earth elements (REEs) were performed on acid digestions of the squeeze cake samples from Site 1258. The major element composition is governed by the mixture of a terrigenous detrital component of roughly average shale (AS) composition with biogenous carbonate and silica. The composition of the terrigenous detritus is close to AS in Units II-IV. For Unit I, a more weathered terrigenous source is suggested. Carbonate contents reach >60 wt% on average in chalks and calcareous claystones of Units II-IV. The SiO2 contribution in excess of the normal terrigenous-detrital background indicates the presence of biogenous silica, with highest amounts in Units II and III. The contents of coarse-grained material (quartz) are enhanced in Unit V, where Ti and Zr contents are also high. This indicates a high-energy depositional environment. REE patterns are generally similar to AS. A more pronounced negative Ce anomaly in Unit IV may indicate low-oxygen conditions in the water column. The Cretaceous black shales of Unit IV are clearly enriched in redox-sensitive and stable sulfide-forming elements (Mo, V, Zn, and As). High phosphate contents point toward enhanced nutrient supply and high bioproductivity. Ba/Al ratios are rather high throughout Unit IV despite the absence of sulfate in the pore water, indicating elevated primary production. Manganese contents are extremely low for most of the interval studied. Such an Mn depletion is only possible in an environment where Mn was mobilized and transported into an expanded oxygen minimum zone ("open system"). The sulfur contents show a complete sulfidation of the reactive iron of Unit IV and a significant excess of sulfur relative to that of iron, which indicates that part of the sulfur was incorporated into organic matter. We suppose extreme paleoenvironmental conditions during black shale deposition: high bioproductivity like in recent coastal upwelling settings together with severe oxygen depletion if not presence of hydrogen sulfide in the water column.
