Macrobenthos biomass and bottom biocoenoses were studied in the sublittoral zone of the southern East Siberian Sea. The macrobenthos is characterized by relatively high abundance (from 30 to 2680 #/m**2), biomass (from 0.25 to 578.8 g/m**2), and diversity (83 species in total). Lateral distribution of macrobenthos biomass correlates with a substrate type and salinity and is substantially higher in areas washed by the Arctic water mass than in estuaries with mixed fresh and Arctic waters and shows a tendency to decreasing in the convergence zone of different water masses. The highest macrobenthos biomass is observed in cores of water masses in the Long Strait area and in the eastern part of the sea.

The monograph gives results of studies of sediments and rocks collected from D/S Glomar Challenger in the Pacific Ocean. These studies have been based on the lithological facial analysis applied for the first time for identificating genesis of ocean sediments. These results include new ideas on formation of the Earth's sedimentary cover and can be used for constructing regional and global schemes of ocean paleogeography, reconstructing some structures, correlating sedimentation on continents and in oceans, estimating perspectives of oil- and gas-bearing deposits and ore formation. The monograph also gives the first petrographic classification of organic matter in black shales.

A micropaleontological study of planktonic assemblages on the partially laminated sapropel S5 (late Pleistocene, marine isotope stage (MIS) 5e) was performed in two piston cores from Urania Basin area (eastern Mediterranean, west of Crete): UM94PC16 and UM94PC31 recovered during a PALEOFLUX Project Cruise. The abundance of Florisphaera profunda indicates the development of a deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM) before the anoxic condition at bottom were established, whereas patterns of upper photic zone coccoliths suggest extreme oligotrophy in surface water. The short appearance of Globorotalia scitula and the presence of Globigerinoides ruber in the lower part of sapropel testify to a thermal stratification, also recorded by changes in primary producers. During G. scitula occurrence, diatoms, mainly represented by Pseudosolenia calcar-avis, appear and bloom because of their capability in using nutrients from DCM. Scanning electron microscope analyses performed on selected intervals from UM94PC16 show that the sapropel is organized in microlaminae mostly composed by siliceous microfossils. In particular, sapropel S5 could be related to an enhanced nutrient availability in the lower-middle part of the photic zone, stratified conditions, and a higher continental input.

High-resolution bathymetric surveys, bottom photography and sample analyses show that Loihi Seamount at the southernmost extent of the Hawaiian ëhotspotí is an active, young submarine volcano that is probably the site of an emerging Hawaiian island. Hydrothermal deposits sampled from the active summit rift system were probably formed by precipitation from cooling vent fluids or during cooling and oxidation of high-temperature polymetallic sulphide assemblages. No exotic benthic fauna were found to be associated with the presently active hydrothermal vents mapped.

The monograph has been written on the base of data obtained from samples and materials collected during the 19-th cruise of RV ''Akademik Vernadsky'' to the Northern and Equatorial Indian Ocean. Geological features of the region (stratigraphy, tectonic structure, lithology, distribution of ore-forming components in bottom sediments, petrography of igneous rocks, etc.) are under consideration. Regularities of trace element concentration in Fe-Mn nodules, nodule distribution in bottom sediments, and engineering-geological properties of sediments within the nodule fields have been studied. Much attention is paid to ocean crust rocks. The wide range of ore mineralization (magnetite, chromite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, pentlandite, and other minerals) has been ascertained.

During the cruise of the" Mabahiss" from Zanzibar to Colombo at Station 133 (1° 25' 54" S. to 1° 19' 42" S. and 66° 34' 12" E. to 66° 35' 18" E.) several small rock fragments were brought up in the Monegasque net; and, since at this position there is no possibility of the material being transferred by floating Ice, these specimens are of some interest as samples of oceanic rock foundations. All the rocks have a black appearance, but in the majority this skin is of negligible thickness. Exceptionally, however, it may attain to 1/3 in. (St. 133, 8), and then the specimens are rounded. The coating is made of dark opaque manganese material. At Station 166 one or two similar specimens of angular basalt were found in the trawl consisting mainly of manganese nodules.

Concretions of manganese have been discovered by the geological expedition to the islands of the Timor group in 1910-1912 in triassic and jurassic deep-sea deposits, on the Island of Timor, and also well developed in similar jurassic deposits on the island of Rotti, and previously, in 1894, the author noticed them in abysmal deposits of the pre-cretaceous probably jurassic Danau formation, occurring in West and East Borneo. On the island of Rotti nodules of manganese were found in several localities in siliceous limestones, marls, siliceous and calcareous clayshales along with concretions and nodules of chert of jurassic age, full of tests of radiolaria.
