Bacterial cell number in the water column of the Kara Sea and estuary areas of the Ob and Yenisey Rivers was determined in water samples collected at 32 stations at depths from the surface to 200 m. The samples were analyzed by direct microscopy. In most parts of the sea microorganism concentrations ranged generally from 103 to 104 cells per ml and their biomasses from milligrams to tens of mg/m**3. Bacterioplankton concentration of river waters was much higher than in the open sea, especially in Ob waters. The highest bacteria concentrations, hundreds of thousands cells per ml with biomass exceeding 200 mg/m**3, were found in the southern part of the Ob section. Minimal concentrations were observed in the northeastern part and near the southeastern part of the Ob section and the southeastern coast of Novaya Zemlya. Dark CO2 fixation rates determined at some stations indicated low bacteria biomass production.

Bivalve shells can provide excellent archives of past environmental change but have not been used to interpret ocean acidification events. We investigated carbon, oxygen and trace element records from different shell layers in the mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis combined with detailed investigations of the shell ultrastructure. Mussels from the harbour of Ischia (Mediterranean, Italy) were transplanted and grown in water with mean pHT 7.3 and mean pHT 8.1 near CO2 vents on the east coast of the island. Most prominently, the shells recorded the shock of transplantation, both in their shell ultrastructure, textural and geochemical record. Shell calcite, precipitated subsequently under acidified seawater responded to the pH gradient by an in part disturbed ultrastructure. Geochemical data from all test sites show a strong metabolic effect that exceeds the influence of the low-pH environment. These field experiments showed that care is needed when interpreting potential ocean acidification signals because various parameters affect shell chemistry and ultrastructure. Besides metabolic processes, seawater pH, factors such as salinity, water temperature, food availability and population density all affect the biogenic carbonate shell archive.

Quantitative analysis of the late Cenozoic planktonic foraminiferal record from western Arabian Sea Site 722 revealed long term trends in the history of oceanography and climate. The modern western Arabian Sea surface waters are highly influenced by the monsoonal wind system. Summer upwelling, a result of southwestern winds, occurs along the coast of Somalia which produces distinct foraminiferal assemblages which are dominated by G. bulloides d'Orbigny. Consequently, variations in the distribution record of G. bulloides through time monitor the upwelling history associated with monsoonal activities. G. bulloides was a minor constituent of the foraminiferal fauna from the bottom of the hole (~14.5 Ma) until about 8.6 Ma ago. Then a rapid shift occurred toward higher values, up to 53% at 7.4 Ma. We interpret this rapid increase as a major step in the evolution of the monsoonal history. It is either the establishment of the system or at least a strong intensification of the monsoonal winds. At 5.5 Ma a significant drop of the G. bulloides relative abundance occurred which may indicate less upwelling, or alternatively other biota may have been favored in this period. From 5.0 Ma to Recent the G. bulloides record indicates that upwelling has occurred with minor fluctuations.

Phytoplankton of a surface strongly desalinated water lens was investigated on the basis of materials collected during Cruise 57 of R/V Akademik Mstislav Keldysh in September 2007. The lens with salinity <18 psu had area of ca. 19000 sq. km and was located in the northwestern part of the Kara Sea near the eastern coast of Novaya Zemlya. It was a specific biotope that had been isolated from surrounding waters for more than three months. In the investigated area 66 algae species were identified. The maximal species diversity was found in the upper layers of the desalinated lens, where species number was 1.5 to 3 times higher than in other parts of the water column. Phytoplankton abundance in the upper layers of the lens was 1.5 to 4.5 times higher than in its lower part and generally higher than below the picnocline. Diatoms were the most abundant group in the upper layers of the lens, while flagellates dominated in the subpicnocline part of the water column. Maximal values of phytoplankton biomass were observed everywhere in the upper layers of the lens, where they were 1.2 to 3.7 times higher than in the lower part of the lens and 1.3 to 7.2 times higher than in the layer below the picnocline. Dinoflagellates generally gave the most contribution to total phytoplankton biomass. Phytoplankton of the desalinated surface lens in the northwestern part of the Kara Sea by its composition and quantitative parameters had the nearest resemblance to a phytocenosis that we observed two weeks later at a shallow desalinated shelf closely adjacent to the Ob estuary.

A seawall was constructed in 1897 along the steep coast of Streckelsberg, Usedom Island to stop the cliff retreat. It was destroyed several times by storm induced sea floods, reconstructed and gradually extended to a length of 450 m. After the severe storm event of 1/2.3.1949, no more repair work was implemented. The ruins were no longer capable of preventing further erosion of the Streckelsberg cliff. A new protective structure became a necessity against ongoing erosion, and to check the lowering of the abrasion platform. The construction of three breakwaters began in 1995. A severe storm occurred on 3/4.11.1995 before their completion. Coastal bottom sediment mapping using a sidescan-sonar carried out two days later showed that a channel system down to a depth of 1.5 m was cut into the sand layer covering the sea floor on both sides of the Koserow Bank. The bottom of these channels was paved with gravel and boulders. This layer was encountered in the whole surveyed area below a mobile sand layer. Discharged bodies of fine sand half a meter high and erosional cavities several m2 in diameter around boulders led to the conclusion that an intensive sediment movement down to a depth of 11 m had taken place during the storm. A storm related direction of sediment discharge could not be identified. The existing section of the breakwaters withstood the severe storm.

Distribution of Fe, Mn, Ti, Cu, Ni, Co, V, Cr, Mo, As in bottom sediments of a section from the Hawaiian Islands to the coast of Mexico. In the surface layer and isochronic layers of sediments from biogenic-terrigenous sediments of the Mexico coast to pelagic red clays of the Northeast Basin contents of all studied elements increase, and more sharply for mobile ones - Mn, Mo, Cu, Ni, Co, As. In near Hawaii sediments rich in coarsely fragmented volcanic-terrigenous and pyroclastic material of basalt composition enriched in Ti, Fe, Cr, V, P contents of these elements in surface sediments and in sediment mass increase and contents of Mn, Mo, Ni, Co, Cu, As (for the same reason) decrease compared to red clays. An area of hemipelagic and transition sediments is identified; these sediments have much higher contents of Mn, Fe, Cu, Ni, Mo, As, (Ba) than red clays and similar sediments of the Northwest Pacific Ocean. This is due to hydrothermal activity in the tectonically active zone at the northern extension of the East Pacific Rise. Similar character of distribution of the elements in the surface layer and in the isochrone layers of bottom sediments along the most part of the section is shown. Similarity between distribution of the elements in sediments of the western and the eastern parts of the Transpacific section is established.

Site 1237 is located on Nazca Ridge ~140 km off the coast of Peru and thus within the offshore region of the Peru-Chile Current. A total of 83 samples were used to provide an initial radiolarian biostratigraphic framework for Site 1237; radiolarians are present to Sample 202-1237B-19H-2, 58-60 cm (186.45 meters composite depth [mcd]) and are of good to fair abundance and preservation. Site 1237 is influenced by both subtropical and northward-transported southern latitude waters, has 55 ash layers within the uppermost 166 m, and has minimal to gross reworking. Shipboard paleomagnetic results showed that the upper 200 m spanned the last 12 m.y., and in the upper 100 mcd, the paleomagnetic inclination pattern could be directly correlated to the geomagnetic polarity timescale (GPTS). Tropical biostratigraphy was used to establish the zonal boundaries for Site 1237, and the paleomagnetic and radiolarian stratigraphy were well correlated.

The Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) drilled at five sites in the western Atlantic Ocean during Leg 207. The objective of the drilling was to recover samples from the shallow buried Cretaceous and Paleocene sediments on the Demerara Rise off Suriname, South America. These sediments are being studied for a number of paleoceanographic studies of the low-latitude Atlantic off the coast of Suriname (this volume). For this report two sites, Sites 1257 and 1258, were selected for silicoflagellate study because shipboard results suggested these two sites as the only ones with siliceous microfossils of Paleocene-Eocene age. The Demarara Rise is a predominant submarine plateau located off the coast of Suriname and French Guyana. This plateau stretches 380 km along the coast and is 220 km wide. The depth to seafloor along the depth transect drilled during ODP Leg 207 ranges from 1000 to 4500 m, but most of the remainder of the plateau lies in shallow water of 700 m. Much of this area is covered with 2-3 km of sediments. The Demerara Rise is built on rifted Precambrian continental crust. The plateau was one of the last places to be in contact with West Africa during the opening of the Atlantic Ocean (see Shipboard Scientific Party, 2004). Site 1257 (9°27'N, 54°20'W; water depth = 2951 m) is located on a terrace on the northwestern Demerara Rise ~400 km from Suriname. This is the second deepest water depth location drilled during Leg 207. Sediments from this area range in age from Miocene to Albian. This area is part of the transform fault that separated from Central America and western Africa. Three holes were drilled at Site 1257. Site 1258 (9°26'N, 54°43'W; water depth = 3192 m) is located on the western slope of the Demerara Rise ~380 km north of Suriname. This site is the distal and deepest site of the paleoceanographic depth transect drilled across Demerara Rise during Leg 207. The area is located on a ridge of Paleocene sediments cropping out on the seafloor. Three holes were drilled at Site 1258, but only one is studied.

Several studies indicate that the 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake (Mw 9.0) off the Pacific coast of Japan has induced slip to the trench and triggered landslides in the Japan Trench. In order to better understand these processes, detailed mapping and shallow-coring landslides at the trench as well as Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) deep drilling to recover the plate boundary décollement (Japan Trench Fast Earthquake Drilling Project, JFAST) have been conducted. In this study we report sediment core data from the rapid response R/V SONNE cruise (SO219A) to the Japan Trench, evidencing a Mass Transport Deposit (MTD) in the uppermost section later drilled at this JFAST-site during IODP Expedition 343. A 8.7 m long gravity core (GeoB16423-1) recovered from ~7,000 m water depth reveals a 8 m sequence of semi-consolidated mud clast breccias embedded in a distorted chaotic sediment matrix. The MTD is covered by a thin veneer of 50 cm hemipelagic, bioturbated diatomaceous mud. This stratigraphic boundary can be clearly distinguished by using physical properties data from Multi Sensor Core Logging and from fall-cone penetrometer shear strength measurements. The geochemical analysis of the pore-water shows undisturbed linear profiles measured from the seafloor downcore across the stratigraphic contact between overlying younger background-sediment and MTD below. This indicates that the investigated section has not been affected by a recent sediment destabilization in the course of the giant Tohoku-Oki earthquake event. Instead, we report an older landslide which occurred between 700 and 10,000 years ago, implying that submarine mass movements are dominant processes along the Japan Trench. However, they occur on local sites and not during each megathrust earthquake.

The bimodal, alkaline volcanic suite of the Kap Washington Group (KWG) at the northern coast of Greenland was investigated during the BGR CASE 2 expedition in 1994. Geochemical and Nd and Sr isotopic data are presented for basalts to rhyolites of the KWG and of related basaltic dykes cutting Lower Paleozoic sediments. In the evd(t) vs. (87Sr/86Sr)t diagram, the KWG basalts and rhyolites follow a common mixing trend with increasing crustal contamination from basic to acid volcanites. Assimilation of pre-existing crustal rocks during formation of the rhyolitic melt is documented by Nd model ages of 0.9-1.2 Ga and by different fractionation trends for the basalts and the rhyolites in the Y vs. Zr diagram. Petrographical and geochemical features indicate intra-plate volcanism which was active most probably during a continental rifting phase. A new Rb/Sr whole rock age on rhyolites of 64 ±3 Ma, corresponding to the result of LARSEN (1982), confirms that the volcanic activity lasted until the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary. 40Ar139Ar dating on amphibol separates from a comendite yielded strongly disturbed age spectra with a minimum age of 37.7 ±0.3 Ma. This age is interpreted to date a hydrothermal overprint of the volcanic rocks related to compressive tectonics which led to the overthrust of basement rocks over the Kap Washington Group.

Diatoms are present in middle to lower upper Miocene sections of all holes examined during Leg 150, but are generally absent or in low abundance in Pleistocene to middle upper Miocene sediments. An exception is the alternating diatom-rich, diatom-poor intervals in upper Quaternary sediments. Five new diatom zones, covering an interval from near the lower/middle Miocene boundary to the lower upper Miocene, are proposed. Some of the taxon used to define these zones are also used in zonal schemes for the East Coast of the United States, and allow for correlations to be drawn between this region and Leg 150 sites. Lower Miocene and older levels are not included in this study. Although older Tertiary diatoms are present at some of the sites, dissolution has largely compromised their usefulness as zonal markers.

The Astoria submarine fan, located off the coast of Washington and Oregon, has grown throughout the Pleistocene from continental input delivered by the Columbia River drainage system. Enormous floods from the sudden release of glacial lake water occurred periodically during the Pleistocene, carrying vast amounts of sediment to the Pacific Ocean. DSDP site 174, located on the southern distal edge of the Astoria Fan, is composed of 879 m of terrigenous sediments. The section is divided into two major units separated by a distinct seismic discontinuity: an upper, turbidite fan unit (Unit I), and an underlying finer-grained unit (Unit II). Both units have overlapping ranges of Nd and Hf isotope compositions, with the majority of samples having e-Nd values of -7.1 to -15.2 and eHf values -6.2 to -20.0; the most notable exception is the uppermost sample in the section, which is identical to modern Columbia River sediment. Nd depleted mantle model ages for the site range from 2.0 to 1.2 Ga and are consistent with derivation from cratonic Proterozoic source regions, rather than Cenozoic and Mesozoic terranes proximal to the Washington-Oregon coast. The Astoria Fan sediments have significantly less radiogenic Nd (and Hf) isotopic compositions than present day Columbia River sediment (e-Nd=-3 to -4; [Goldstein, S.J., Jacobsen, S.B., 1987. Nd and Sr isotopic systematics of river water suspended material: implications for crustal evolution. Earth. Planet. Sci. Lett. 87, 249-265; doi:10.1016/0012-821X(88)90013-1]), and suggest that outburst flooding, tapping Proterozoic source regions, was the dominant sediment transport mechanism in the genesis and construction of the Astoria Fan. Pb isotopes form a highly linear 207Pb/204Pb - 206Pb/204Pb array, and indicate the sediments are a binary mixture of two disparate sources with isotopic compositions similar to Proterozoic Belt Supergroup metasediments and Columbia River Basalts. The combined major, trace and isotopic data argue that outburst flooding was responsible for depositing the majority (top 630 m) of the sediment in the Astoria Fan.

The "Hydroblack91" dataset is based on samples collected in the summer of 1991 and covers part of North-Western in front of Romanian coast and Western Black Sea (Bulgarian coasts) (between 43°30' - 42°10' N latitude and 28°40'- 31°45' E longitude). Mesozooplankton sampling was undertaken at 20 stations. The whole dataset is composed of 72 samples with data of zooplankton species composition, abundance and biomass. Samples were collected in discrete layers 0-10, 0-20, 0-50, 10-25, 25-50, 50-100 and from bottom up to the surface at depths depending on water column stratification and the thermocline depth. Zooplankton samples were collected with vertical closing Juday net, diameter - 36cm, mesh size 150 µm. Tows were performed from surface down to bottom meters depths in discrete layers. Samples were preserved by a 4% formaldehyde sea water buffered solution. Sampling volume was estimated by multiplying the mouth area with the wire length Mesozooplankton abundance: The collected material was analysed using the method of Domov (1959). Samples were brought to volume of 25-30 ml depending upon zooplankton density and mixed intensively until all organisms were distributed randomly in the sample volume. After that 5 ml of sample was taken and poured in the counting chamber which is a rectangle form for taxomomic identification and count. Large (> 1 mm body length) and not abundant species were calculated in whole sample. Counting and measuring of organisms were made in the Dimov chamber under the stereomicroscope to the lowest taxon possible. Taxonomic identification was done at the Institute of Oceanology by Asen Konsulov using the relevant taxonomic literature (Mordukhay-Boltovskoy, F.D. (Ed.). 1968, 1969,1972).
