Geochemical analyses of the middle Eocene through lower Oligocene lithologic Unit IIIC (260-518 meters below seafloor [mbsf]) indicate a relatively constant geochemical composition of the detrital fraction throughout this depositional interval at Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 647 in the southern Labrador Sea. The main variability occurs in redox-sensitive elements (e.g., iron, manganese, and phosphorus), which may be related to early diagenetic mobility in anaerobic pore waters during bacterial decomposition of organic matter. Initial preservation of organic matter was mediated by high sedimentation rates (36 m/m.y.). High iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) contents are associated with carbonate concretions of siderite, manganosiderite, and rhodochrosite. These concretions probably formed in response to elevated pore-water alkalinity and total dissolved carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations resulting from bacterial sulfate reduction, as indicated by nodule stable-isotope compositions and pore-water geochemistry. These nodules differ from those found in upper Cenozoic hemipelagic sequences in that they are not associated with methanogenesis. Phosphate minerals (carbonate-fluorapatite) precipitated in some intervals, probably as the result of desorption of phosphorus from iron and manganese during reduction. The bulk chemical composition of the sediments differs little from that of North Atlantic Quaternary abyssal red clays, but may contain a minor hydrothermal component. The silicon/ aluminum (Si/Al) ratio, however, is high and variable and probably reflects original variations in biogenic opal, much of which is now altered to smectite and/or opal CT. An increase in the sodium/potassium (Na/K) ratio in the upper Eocene corresponds to the beginning of coarsergrained feldspar flux to the site, possibly marking the onset of more vigorous deep currents. Although the Site 647 cores provide a nearly complete high-resolution, high-latitude Eocene-Oligocene record, the high sedimentation rate and somewhat unusual diagenetic conditions have led to variable alteration of benthic foraminifers and fine-fraction carbonate and have overprinted the original stable-isotope records. Planktonic foraminifers are less altered, but on the whole, there is little chance of sorting out the nature and timing of environmental change on the basis of our stable-isotope analyses.

The oxygen isotope record of the planktonic foraminifera Globigerina bulloides and Neogloboquadrina pachyderma from Pliocene and early Pleistocene sediments at both DSDP site 173 and the Centerville Beach section in California suggests a large influx of isotopically light water in this area during late Pliocene and early Pleistocene time. Salinity may have been reduced by as much as 2 to 4 ?. Surface sea water paleotemperatures for the lower Pliocene range from 9.5°C to 15.5°C. The oxygen isotope record of the benthonic genus Uvigerina shows little variation indicating environmental stability at depth. At DSDP site 173 the small variation in Uvigerina is due to variation in the oxygen isotopic composition of the oceans as glaciers waxed and waned. At the Centerville Beach section the oxygen isotopic composition of Uvigerina reflects the gradual shoaling of the Humboldt Basin. Carbon and oxygen isotope ratios in G. bulloides and N. pachyderma are inversely correlated at the 95% confidence level. This may indicate that the oxygen and carbon isotopic composition of foraminifera are influenced by the same factors. On the other hand, the inverse correlation may be due to metabolic fractionation. No correlation was found between oxygen and carbon isotopic composition in Uvigerina.

The age of the subducting Nazca Plate off Chile increases northwards from 0 Ma at the Chile Triple Junction (46°S) to 37 Ma at the latitude of Valparaíso (32°S). Age-related variations in the thermal state of the subducting plate impact on (a) the water influx to the subduction zone, as well as on (b) the volumes of water that are released under the continental forearc or, alternatively, carried beyond the arc. Southern Central Chile is an ideal setting to study this effect, because other factors for the subduction zone water budget appear constant. We determine the water influx by calculating the crustal water uptake and by modeling the upper mantle serpentinization at the outer rise of the Chile Trench. The water release under forearc and arc is determined by coupling FEM thermal models of the subducting plate with stability fields of water-releasing mineral reactions for upper and lower crust and hydrated mantle. Results show that both the influx of water stored in, and the outflux of water released from upper crust, lower crust and mantle vary drastically over segment boundaries. In particular, the oldest and coldest segments carry roughly twice as much water into the subduction zone as the youngest and hottest segments, but their release flux to the forearc is only about one fourth of the latter. This high variability over a subduction zone of < 1500 km length shows that it is insufficient to consider subduction zones as uniform entities in global estimates of subduction zone fluxes. Five species of Bolboforma have been found in middle Eocene to lower Oligocene sediments from Maud Rise, Weddel Sea, Antarctica (Leg 113, Holes 689B and 690B), the first reported Bolboforma from the Antarctic Paleogene. The previous oldest known occurrences of Bolboforma in the world's oceans were of late Eocene age and this study extends the known range to the middle middle Eocene (~ 44 Ma). Highest species diversity of Bolboforma in the Weddell Sea region of Antarctica occurred during the late Eocene, after which all but one important species disappeared before the Eocene/Oligocene boundary (36.5 Ma). The remaining species, B. irregularis, disappeared soon after, during the earliest Oligocene. The disappearance of Bolboforma in this region of Antarctica coincided with significant climatic cooling that occurred at the end of the Eocene and during the earliest Oligocene, when subpolar replaced temperate conditions. Bolboforma is not known from younger sediments in the Antarctic except for a brief interval during the late early Miocene, an interval of Neogene climatic warmth. The presence of Bolboforma in Eocene to lower Oligocene sequences in the Weddell Sea region of Antarctica is therefore consistent with this taxon's previously recognized association with temperate water masses. Bolboforma is of limited biostratigraphic value at present, because of relatively long stratigraphic ranges and diachronous extinctions. Previous suggestions that Bolboforma represents an encystment stage of phytoplankton require further critical study because the deposition, in large numbers, at paleodepths up to 2250 m in the open ocean, is an unlikely strategy for an encystment phase of a phytoplanktonic organism. A new species, Bolboforma antarctica, is described, exhibiting a stratigraphic range from middle middle Eocene to the upper Eocene (~ 44 to 39 Ma).

An integrated (petrographical and micropaleontological) study of sedimentary cover samples dredged from the lower slopes of the Kuril deep-sea basin was carried out. Pliocene-Pleistocene sediments are mainly represented by tuffaceous sedimentary rocks (tuffites, tuffaceous muds, tuffaceous diatomites, tuffaceous silts, tuffaceous sandstones, etc.). Significant admixtures of pyroclastic matter, especially of volcanic glasses, indicates that sedimentation process was accompanied by explosive volcanism. The data obtained give evidence about intensification of tectonomagmatic regime within the region under study during Pliocene-Pleistocene time. By the beginning of Pliocene, a deep-sea basin with a well-manifested continental and/or island slope and a narrow shelf already existed. Pliocene-Pleistocene deposits accumulated in a cold well-aerated deep-sea basin under oxic conditions and downslope sediment transport.

Analyses of 40 carbonate core samples - 27 from Site 535, 12 from Site 540, and 1 from Site 538A - have confirmed many of the findings of the Shipboard Scientific Party. The samples, all but one Early to mid-Cretaceous in age (Berriasian to Cenomanian), reflect sequences of cyclically anoxic and oxic depositional environments. They are moderately to very dark colored, dominantly planar-parallel, laminated lime mudstones. Most show the effects of intense mechanical compaction. Visual kerogen characteristics and conventional Rock-Eval parameters indicate that these deep basinal carbonates contain varying mixtures of thermally immature kerogen derived from both marine and terrigenous precursors. However, variations in kerogen chemistry are evident upon analysis of the pyrolysis mass spectral data in conjunction with the other geochemical analyses. Particularly diagnostic is the reduction index, Rl, a measure of H2S produced during pyrolysis. Total organic carbon, TOC, ranges from 0.6 to 6.6%, with an overall average of 2.4%. Average TOCs for these fine-grained mudstones are: late Eocene 2.5% (1 sample), Cenomanian 2.2% (6), Albian 2.0% (10), Aptian 1.3% (1), Barremian-Hauterivian 2.8% (11), late Valanginian 4.8% (3), Berriasian-early Valanginian 1.6% (7). Most of the carbonates have source-potential ratings of fair to very good of predominantly oil-prone to mixed kerogen, with only a few gas-prone samples. The ratings correlate well with the inferred depositional environments, i.e., whether oxic or anoxic. Several new organic-geochemical parameters, especially Rl, based on pyrolysis mass spectrometry of powdered whole-rock samples, support this view. Tar from fractures in laminated to bioturbated limestones of Unit IV (late Valanginian) at 535-58-4, 19-20 cm (530 m sub-bottom) appears to be mature, biodegraded, and of migrated rather than on site indigenous origin.

Analysis of 66 samples from DSDP Site 263 (Cores 263-4R-4 to 263-29R-4) reveals a unique faunal composition with a predominance of agglutinated taxa, many of them previously unrecorded from any other DSDP and ODP Indian Ocean sites. A total of 66 agglutinated and 31 calcareous taxa are documented and five new species are described: Hippocrepina gracilis n.sp., "Textuluriopsis" elegans n.sp., Aaptotoichus challengeri n.sp., "Gaudryinopsis" pseudobettenstaedti n.sp. and "Gaudryina" cuvierensis n.sp. Three assemblages are recognized based on changes in the composition of dominant taxa and occurrences of stratigraphically important species: (1) a high-diversity Valanginian to Barremian Bulbobaculites-Recurvoides Assemblage (Cores 263-29R to - 18R), comprised of numerous elongate agglutinated forms, rare nodosariids, and variable numbers of tubes and ammodiscids; (2) a moderately diverse Aptian to Albian Rhizammina-Ammodiscus-Glomospira Assemblage (Cores 263-18R to -7R) with highly fluctuating numbers of the nominate taxa and Haplophragmoides, Trochammina, Verneuilinoides spp., and Verneuilina howchini; (3) a very low diversity Albian or younger Assemblage (Cores 263-6R to -4R) containing sparse agglutinated foraminifera, rare nodosariids and rotaliids. We interpret the assemblages as shelf to lower slope and consider them to reflect a deepening palaeobathymetry as the Cuvier margin subsided after the initial breakup of East Gondwana during the Valanginian. Our interpretation is in sharp contrast with initial palaeodepth estimates of less than 100 m, as well as with original chronostratigraphic interpretations based on foraminifera and nannofossils which correlated the base of the recovered interval with the Aptian. The absence of many cosmoplitan forms, despite high diversity suggests strong faunal differentiation in the Austral realm or endemisn within the Cuvier Basin during the Early Cretaceous.
