Ocean Drilling Program Leg 129 recovered chert, porcellanite, and radiolarite from Middle Jurassic to lower Miocene strata from the western Pacific that formed by different processes and within distinct host rocks. These cherts and porcellanites formed by (1) replacement of chalk or limestone, (2) silicification and in-situ silica phase-transformation of bedded clay-bearing biosiliceous deposits, (3) high-temperature silicification adjacent to volcanic flows or sills, and (4) silica phase-transformation of mixed biosiliceous-volcaniclastic sediments. Petrologic and O-isotopic studies highlight the key importance of permeability and time in controlling the formation of dense cherts and porcellanites. The formation of dense, vitreous cherts apparently requires the local addition and concentration of silica. The influence of permeability is shown by two examples, in which: (1) fragments of originally identical radiolarite that were differentially isolated from pore-water circulation by cement-filled fractures were silicified to different degrees, and (2) by the development of secondary porosity during the opal-CT to quartz inversion within conditions of negligible permeability. The importance of time is shown by the presence of quartz chert below, but not above, a Paleogene hiatus at Site 802, indicating that between 30 and 52 m.y. was required for the formation of quartz chert within calcareous-siliceous sediments. The oxygen-isotopic composition for all Leg 129 carbonate- and Fe/Mn-oxide-free whole-rock samples of chert and porcellanite range widely from d18O = 27.8 per mil to 39.8 per mil vs. V-SMOW. Opal-CT samples are consistently richer in 18O (34.1 per mil to 39.3 per mil) than quartz subsamples (27.8 per mil to 35.7 per mil). Using the O-isotopic fractionation expression for quartz-water of Knauth and Epstein (1976) and assuming d18Opore water = -1.0 per mil, model temperatures of formation are 7°-26°C for carbonate-replacement quartz cherts, 22°-25°C for bedded quartz cherts, and 32°-34°C for thermal quartz cherts. Large variations in O-isotopic composition exist at the same burial depth between co-existing silica phases in the same sample and within the same phase in adjacent lithologies. For example, quartz has a wide range of isotopic compositions within a single breccia sample; d18O = 33.4 per mil and 28.0 per mil for early and late stages of fracture-filling cementation, and 31.6 per mil and 30.2 per mil for microcrystalline quartz precipitation within enclosed chert and radiolarite fragments. Similarly, opal-CT d101 spacing varies across lithologic or diagenetic boundaries within single samples. Co-occurring opal-CT and chalcedonic quartz in shallowly buried chert and porcellanite from Sites 800 and 801 have an 8.7 per mil difference in d18O, suggesting that pore waters in the Pigafetta Basin underwent a Tertiary shift to strongly 18O-depleted values due to alteration of underlying Aptian to Albian-Cenomanian volcaniclastic deposits after opal-CT precipitation, but prior to precipitation of microfossil-filling chalcedony.

Diatoms were studied quantitatively in six latest Quaternary (~70 kyr B.P. to Recent) piston cores from the westernmost Mediterranean, the Alboran Basin, and the Atlantic region immediately to the west of the Straits of Gibraltar. The Atlantic cores completely lack diatoms. In the Alboran Basin, diatoms are common from late Stage 3 (~27.5 kyr B.P.) to Termination lb (9 kyr B.P.) and in Recent core tops, but are absent in the other latest Quaternary intervals. Maximum accumulation of diatoms and highest abundance of species normally in sediments associated with increased productivity occurred during the latest Quaternary deglaciation, in the first phase of Termination I (~14.8 kyr B.P.). In the modern Alboran Basin, a region of high biological productivity occurs immediately east of the Gibraltar Straits. This high productivity results from upwelling associated with the interaction between the Atlantic inflow and the bottom topography near the Spanish coast. The upwelled nutrient-rich waters are then advected to the east and southeast by the surficial anticyclonic gyral circulation. Late Quaternary variations in diatom abundance are considered to reflect changes in this upwelling intensity with highest diatom abundances inferred to result from increased upwelling associated with an intensification of the anticyclonic gyral circulation. Highest inferred upwelling rates occurred during the first phase of latest Quaternary deglaciation. It is possible that an intensification of circulation within the Mediterranean Basin as a whole occurred from late Stage 3 to mid Termination I because widespread hiatus formation has been reported at this time in the Straits of Sicily due to an increase in the formation of intermediate waters. Diatoms were not preserved in other latest Quaternary intervals due to insufficient productivity to counterbalance their dissolution.

Leg 101 of the Ocean Drilling Program recovered a large volume of Neogene sediments from sites in the Straits of Florida, Little Bahama Bank, and Exuma Sound. In varying amounts, shallow-water, platform-derived carbonate debris is nearly ubiquitous. Reworked planktonic foraminifers are common, especially in the Pliocene-Pleistocene. At Site 626 in the Straits of Florida, a sequence of Holocene to upper Oligocene sediments was recovered. The greatest Neogene hiatus at this site spans the latest Miocene through Pliocene. Below this, several minor hiatuses are present in a generally conformable sequence. From the Little Bahama Bank transect (Sites 627, 628, and 630), a nearly complete composite Neogene section was sampled. At Site 627, a major unconformity separates lowermost Miocene sediments from middle to upper Eocene sediments. A second major unconformity occurs at Site 628. Here, middle Miocene sediments lie above uppermost Oligocene deposits. Sites 632, 633, and 631 in Exuma Sound all bottomed in a thick, lower Pliocene section. The mid-Pliocene is very thin at Sites 633 and 631, while it is better represented at Site 632. Major unconformities at Sites 627 and 628 appear to correlate with periods of elevated sea level, which suggests that carbonate platform shedding may be greatest during this part of the sea-level cycles. One of the salient features of the Bahamas is the lack of any systematic temporal distribution of hiatuses. Only a brief hiatus in the late Pliocene may be regional. It appears that local platform-shedding events were of equal or greater importance in developing the stratigraphy of the Bahamas than regional or eustatic events.

Ice-rich permafrost landscapes are sensitive to climate and environmental change due to the melt-out of ground ice during thermokarst development. Thermokarst processes in the northern Yukon Territory are currently not well-documented. Lake sediments from Herschel Island (69°36'N; 139°04'W) in the western Canadian Arctic provide a record of thermokarst lake development since the early Holocene. A 727 cm long lake sediment core was analyzed for radiographic images, magnetic susceptibility, granulometry, and biogeochemical parameters (organic carbon, nitrogen, and stable carbon isotopes). Based on eight calibrated AMS radiocarbon dates, the sediment record covers the last ~ 11,500 years and was divided into four lithostratigraphic units (A to D) reflecting different thermokarst stages. Thermokarst initiation at the study area began ~ 11.5 cal ka BP. From ~ 11.5 to 10.0 cal ka BP, lake sediments of unit A started to accumulate in an initial lake basin created by melt-out of massive ground ice and thaw subsidence. Between 10.0 and 7.0 cal ka BP (unit B) the lake basin expanded in size and depth, attributed to talik formation during the Holocene thermal maximum. Higher-than-modern summer air temperatures led to increased lake productivity and widespread terrain disturbances in the lake's catchment. Thermokarst lake development between 7.0 and 1.8 cal ka BP (unit C) was characterized by a dynamic equilibrium, where lake basin and talik steadily expanded into ambient ice-rich terrain through shoreline erosion. Once lakes become deeper than the maximum winter lake ice thickness, thermokarst lake sediments show a great preservation potential. However, site-specific geomorphic factors such as episodic bank-shore erosion or sudden drainage through thermo-erosional valleys or coastal erosion breaching lake basins can disrupt continuous deposition. A hiatus in the record from 1.8 to 0.9 cal ka BP in Lake Herschel likely resulted from lake drainage or allochthonous slumping due to collapsing shore lines before continuous sedimentation of unit D recommenced during the last 900 years.

A history of Mesozoie and Cenozoic palaeoenvironments of the North Atlantie Oeean has been developed based on a detailed analysis of the temporal and spatial distribution of major pelagie sediment facies, of hiatuses. of bulk sediment accumulation rates, and of concentrations and fluxes of the main deep-sea sediment components. The depositional history of the North Atlantic can be subdivided into three major phase: (a) Late Jurassie and Early Cretaceous phase: clastic terrigenous and biogenic pelagic sediment components accumulated rapidly under highly productive surface water masses over the entire occan basin; (b) Late Cretaceous to Early Miocene phase: relatively little terrigenous and pelagic biogenic sediment reached the North Atlantic Ocean floor, intensive hiatus formation occurred at variable rates, and wide stretches of the deep-ocean floor were covered by slowly accumulating terrigenous muds: (c) Middle Miocene to Recent phase: accumulation rates of biogenic and terrigenous deep-sea sediment components increased dramatically up to Quaternary times, rates of hiatus formation and the intensity of deep-water circulation inferred from them seem to have decreased. However, accumulation rate patterns of calcareous pelagic sediment components suggest that large scale reworking and di splacement of deep-sea sediments occurred at a variable rate over wide areas of the North Atlantic during this period.

Lithobiostratigraphic data indicate that the double reflectors on the seismic profile through Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1148 represent two unconformities that coincide, respectively, with the lower/upper Oligocene boundary at ~488 mcd, and Oligocene-Miocene boundary at 460 mcd. Two other unconformities, at ~478 and 472 mcd, respectively, were also identified within the upper Oligocene section. Together they erased a sediment record of about 3 Ma from this locality in a period of very active seafloor spreading. The existence of 32.8 Ma marine sediment at the terminated depth (850 mcd) indicates that the initial breakup of the South China Sea (SCS) was probably during 34-33 Ma, close to the Eocene-Oligocene boundary. High sedimentation rates of 60-115 m/my from the much expanded, N350 m lower Oligocene section resulted from rifting and rapid subsidence between 33 and 29 Ma. The mid-Oligocene unconformity at ~28.5 Ma, which also occurred in many parts of the Indo-West Pacific region, was probably related to a significant uplift of the Himalayan-Tibetan Plateau to the west and the initial collision between Indonesia and Australia in the south. A narrowed Indonesian seaway may have accounted for the late Oligocene warming and chalk deposition in the northern South China Sea including the Site 1148 locality. The unconformities and slumps near the Oligocene-Miocene boundary indicate a very unstable tectonic regime, probably corresponding to changes in the rotation of different land blocks and the seafloor spreading ridge from nearly E-W to NE-SW, as recognized earlier at magnetic Anomaly 7. This 25 Ma event also saw the first New Guinea terrane docking at the northern Australian craton. The low sedimentation rate of ~15 m/my in the early to middle Miocene may correspond to another period of rapid seafloor spreading and rapid widespread subsidence that effectively caused sediment source areas to retreat with a rapidly rising sea level. The isostatic nature of these late Oligocene unconformities and slumps with several major collision-uplift events indicate that the rapid changes in the early evolutionary history of the South China Sea were mainly responding to regional tectonic reconfiguration including the uplift-driven southeast extrusion of the Indochina subcontinent.

Ocean Drilling Program Leg 103 occupied five sites on the Galicia margin, northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. Two holes (Holes 637A and 638B) yielded significant Cenozoic sedimentary sections ranging from late Miocene to late Pleistocene in age. From the nannofossil stratigraphy, one hiatus is recognized in Hole 637A (2.35-2.4 Ma), whereas two hiatuses (one at 1.9-2.6 Ma and another at 3.5-3.7 Ma) are recognized in Hole 638B. Sediment-accumulation rates for the Cenozoic portions of these two holes have been calculated based on the nannofossil datums. The abundance ratios of Coccolithus pelagicus to Discoaster brouweri for Hole 637A show relatively low values and small fluctuations from 2.5 to 6.5 Ma but sharply increase and then widely fluctuate beginning at about 2.5 Ma. This may indicate relatively warmer, more stable surface-water temperatures from 2.5 to 6.5 Ma and cooler, variable surface-water temperatures after 2.5 Ma at Site 637. C. pelagicus/D. brouweri ratios from Hole 638B also show a trend of increasing values with time from late Miocene to late Pliocene, but with more fluctuations and a different pattern from that of Hole 637A.

Rich radiolarian faunas were obtained continuously from Middle Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous radiolarite sequences at Sites 800 and 801, drilled during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 129 in the western Pacific. Occurrences of 90 taxa are presented in tables for these sites. Seven radiolarian zones, Dibolachras tytthopora, Cecrops septemporatus, Pseudodictyomitra carpatica, Pseudodictyomitra primitiva, Cinguloturris carpatica, Stylocapsa spiralis, and Tricolocapsa conexa in descending order, were recognized in this interval. The radiolarite sequences of Sites 800 and 801 encompass approximately the Berriasian to Hauterivian (or to Barremian) and the Bathonian/Callovian to Valanginian ages, respectively. At Site 801, a hiatus of early Oxfordian was identified.

During ODP Leg 123, Sites 765 and 766 were drilled to examine the tectonic evolution, sedimentary history, and paleoceanography of the Argo Abyssal Plain and lower Exmouth Plateau. At each site, the quality of magnetostratigraphic and biostratigraphic records varies because of complicating factors, such as the predominance of turbidites, the presence of condensed horizons, or deposition beneath the CCD. Based primarily on the presence of nannofossils, the base of the sedimentary section at Site 765 was dated as Tithonian. A complete Cretaceous sequence was recovered at this site, although the sedimentation rate varies markedly through the section. The Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary is represented by a condensed horizon. The condensed Cenozoic sequence at Site 765 extends from the upper Paleocene to the lower Miocene. A dramatic increase in sedimentation rate was observed in the lower Miocene, and a 480-m-thick Neogene section is present. The Neogene section is continuous, except for a minor hiatus in the lower Pliocene. The base of the sedimentary section at Site 766 is Valanginian, in agreement with the site's position on marine magnetic anomaly Mil. Valanginian to Barremian sediments are terrigenous, with variable preservation of microfossils, and younger sediments are pelagic, with abundant well-preserved microfossils. Sedimentation rate is highest in the Lower Cretaceous and decreases continually upsection. Upper Cenozoic sediments are condensed, with several hiatuses.

Two sites were drilled in the Celebes Sea as part of Ocean Drilling Program Leg 124; Site 767 and Site 770. Radiolarians are preserved in Paleogene pelagic claystones with minor occurrences in certain Neogene successions. The brown clays that immediately overlie basalt at both sites contain radiolarians of the late middle Eocene Podocyrtis chalara Zone. Late Eocene radiolarians are not found, due to dissolution and probable hiatus. The Oligocene is represented by the Theocyrtis tuberosa and Dorcadospyris ateuchus Zones. Oligocene sediments are strongly dominated by abundant and diverse radiolarians of the TristylospyrislDorcadospyris lineage. Preservation of Paleogene radiolarian assemblages ranges from good to very poor. Late Miocene radiolarians of the Didymocyrtis antepenultima Zone are found only in Site 770. Other Neogene sediments are barren of radiolarian remains, with the exception of latest Pleistocene and Holocene sediments.

A large diameter piston core containing 8.35 m of metalliferous sediment has been recovered from a small abyssal valley in the remote Southwest Pacific Basin (31°42.194'S, 143°30.331'W; 5082 m water depth), providing unique insight into hydrothermal activity and eolian sedimentation there since the early Oligocene. A combination of fish-teeth Sr-isotope stratigraphy and INAA geochemical data reveals an exponentially decreasing hydrothermal flux 31 Ma to the present. Although hydrothermal sedimentation related to seafloor spreading explains this trend, a complex history of late Eocene/early Oligocene ridge jumps, propagating rifts and plate tectonic reorganization of South Pacific seafloor could have also played a role. A possible hiatus in deposition, as recorded by changes in core composition just below 2 m depth, is beyond the resolution of the fish teeth Sr isotope dating method employed here; however, the timing of this interval may be coincident with extinction of the Pacific-Farallon Ridge at ~20 Ma. A low flux eolian component accumulating at this site shows an increase relative to the hydrothermal component above 2 m depth, consistent with dust-generating continental sources far to the west (Australia/New Zealand). This is the first long-term paleoceanographic record obtained from within the South Pacific "bare zone" (Rea et al., 2006), an anomalous region where Pacific seafloor has largely escaped sediment accumulation since the Late Cretaceous.

The analysis of planktic foraminiferal assemblages from Site 1090 (ODP Leg 177), located in the central part of the Subantarctic Zone south of South Africa, provided a geochronology of a 330-m-thick sequence spanning the Middle Eocene to Early Pliocene. A sequence of discrete bioevents enables the calibration of the Antarctic Paleogene (AP) Zonation with lower latitude biozonal schemes for the Middle-Late Eocene interval. In spite of the poor recovery of planktic foraminiferal assemblages, a correlation with the lower latitude standard planktic foraminiferal zonations has been attempted for the whole surveyed interval. Identified bioevents have been tentatively calibrated to the geomagnetic polarity time scale following the biochronology of Berggren et al. (1995). Besides planktic foraminiferal bioevents, the disappearance of the benthic foraminifera Nuttallides truempyi has been used to approximate the Middle/Late Eocene boundary. A hiatus of at least 11.7 Myr occurs between V78 and V71 m composite depth extending from the Early Miocene to the latest Miocene-Early Pliocene. Middle Eocene assemblages exhibit a temperate affinity, while the loss of several planktic foraminiferal species by late Middle to early Late Eocene time reflects cooling. During the Late Eocene-Oligocene intense dissolution caused impoverishment of planktic foraminiferal assemblages possibly following the emplacement of cold, corrosive bottom waters. Two warming peaks are, however, observed: the late Middle Eocene is marked by the invasion of the warmer water Acarinina spinuloinflata and Hantkenina alabamensis at 40.5 Ma, while the middle Late Eocene experienced the immigration of some globigerinathekids including Globigerinatheka luterbacheri and Globigerinatheka cf. semiinvoluta at 34.3 Ma. A more continuous record is observed for the Early Miocene and the Late Miocene-Early Pliocene where planktic foraminiferal assemblages show a distinct affinity with southern mid- to high-latitude faunas.

The four holes (including a re-entry hole) drilled at Site 433 allow determination of the sedimentary sequence of Suiko Seamount in the Emperor chain. The holes are in a small graben basin situated within a lateral lagoon on the seamount. The sedimentary deposits range from the Paleocene to the upper Pliocene and are not uniform and continuous. A major hiatus exists at the top of the lower Eocene reef sediment, below the lower and upper Miocene pelagic sediments. The depositional history and succession of environments are shown by mineralogical and geochemical changes in the sediments.

Chemical analyses of North Atlantic D.S.D.P. (Deep Sea Drilling Project) sediments indicate that basal sediments generally contain higher concentrations of Fe, Mn, Mg, Pb, and Ni, and similar or lower concentrations of Ti, Al, Cr, Cu, Zn, and Li than the material overlying them. Partition studies on selected samples indicate that the enriched metals in the basal sediments are usually held in a fashion similar to that in basal sediments from the Pacific, other D.S.D.P. sediments, and modern North Atlantic ridge and non-ridge material. Although, on average, chemical differences between basal sediments of varying ages are apparent, normalization of the data indicates that the processes leading to metal enrichment on the crest of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge appear to have been approximately constant in intensity since Cretaceous times. In addition, the bulk composition of detrital sediments also appears to have been relatively constant over the same time period. Paleocene sediments from site 118 are, however, an exception to this rule, there apparently having been an increased detrital influx during this period. The bulk geochemistry, partitioning patterns, and mineralogy of sediments from D.S.D.P. 9A indicates that post-depositional migration of such elements as Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pb may have occurred. The basement encountered at the base of site 138 is thought to be a basaltic sill, but the overlying basal sediments are geochemically similar to other metalliferous basal sediments from the North Atlantic. These results, as well as those from site 114 where true oceanic basement was encountered, but where there was an estimated 7 m.y. hiatus between basaltic extrusion and basal sediment deposition, indicate that ridge-crest sediments are not necessarily deposited during active volcanism but can be formed after the volcanism has ceased. The predominant processes for metal enrichment in these deposits and those formed in association with other submarine volcanic features is a combination of shallow hydrothermal activity, submarine weathering of basalt, and the formation of ferromanganese oxides which can scavenge metals from seawater. In addition, it seems as though the formation of submarine metalliferous sediments is not restricted to active-ridge areas.

With the exception of a brief (2 m.y.) late Miocene-early Pliocene hiatus, an essentially complete Neogene record was recovered on the Kerguelen Plateau in a calcareous biofacies. The stratigraphic distribution of about 30 taxa of Neogene planktonic foraminifers recovered at Sites 747, 748,and 751 (Central and Southern Kerguelen plateaus; approximately 54°-58°S) is recorded. Faunas are characterized by low diversity and high dominance and exhibit a gradual decline in species numbers (reflecting a concomitant increase in biosiliceous forms, particularly diatoms) from about 10 in the early Miocene to 5-8 in the middle Miocene, 3-4 in the late Miocene, to essentially a lone (Neogloboquadrina pachyderma) form in the Pliocene-Pleistocene. A provisional sevenfold biostratigraphic zonation has been formulated that, together with the recovery of a representative Neogene magnetostratigraphic record, may ultimately lead to a correlation with low-latitude magnetobiostratigraphies. The initial appearance of Neogloboquadrina pachyderma is associated with magnetic polarity Chron (MPC) 4 (~7 Ma) and MPC 4A (>8 Ma) at Sites 747 and 751, respectively.
