Gabbros drilled from the shallow (720 m) east wall of the Atlantis II transform on the Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR; 32°43.40', 57°16.00') provide the most complete record of the stratigraphy and composition of the oceanic lower crust recovered from the ocean basins to date. Lithologies recovered include gabbro, olivine gabbro, troctolite, trondhjemite, and unusual iron-titanium (FeTi) oxide-rich gabbro containing up to 30% FeTi oxides. The plutonic rock sequence represents a tholeiitic fractionation trend ranging from primitive magmas having Mg numbers of 67 to 69 that fractionated troctolites, to highly evolved liquids that crystallized two-pyroxene, FeTi oxide-rich gabbros and, ultimately, trondhjemite. Isotopic compositions of unaltered Leg 118 gabbros are distinct from Indian Ocean mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB) in having higher 143Nd/144Nd (0.51301-0.51319) and lower 206Pb/204Pb values (17.35-17.67); 87Sr/86Sr values (0.7025-0.7030) overlap those of SWIR basalts, but are generally lower than MORBs from the Southeast Indian Ridge or the Rodrigues Triple Junction. More than one magma composition may have been introduced into the magma chamber during its crystallization history, as suggested by the higher 87Sr/86Sr, 206Pb/204Pb, and lower 143Nd/144Nd values of chromium-rich olivine gabbros from the bottom of Hole 735B. Whole-rock gabbro and plagioclase mineral separate 87Sr/86Sr values are uniformly low (0.7027-0.7030), irrespective of alteration and deformation. By contrast, 87Sr/86Sr values for clinopyroxene (0.7025-0.7039) in the upper half of Hole 735B are higher than coexisting plagioclase and reflect extensive replacement of clinopyroxene by amphibole. Hydrothermal veins and breccias have elevated 87Sr/86Sr values (0.7029-0.7035) and indicate enhanced local introduction of seawater strontium. Oxygen- and hydrogen-isotope results show that secondary amphiboles have uniform dD values of -49 to -54 per mil and felsic hydrothermal veins range from -46 to - 77 per mil. Oxygen-isotope data for secondary amphibole and visibly altered gabbros range to low values (+1.0-+5.5 per mil), and O-isotope disequilibrium between coexisting pyroxene and plagioclase pairs from throughout the stratigraphic column indicates that seawater interacted with much of the gabbro section, but at relatively low water/rock ratios. This is consistent with the persistence of low 87Sr/86Sr values, even in gabbros that were extensively deformed and altered.

The paper reports newly obtained stratigraphic, petrographic, and isotope geochronology data on modern moderately acid lavas from the Keli Highland of the Greater Caucasus and presents a geological map of the territory, in which 35 volcanoes active in Late Quaternary time were documented by the authors. Total duration of volcanic activity at the highland was estimated at 250 ka. Volcanic activity was discrete and occurred in three phases: Middle Neopleistocene (245-170 ka), Late Neopleistocene (135-70 ka), and Late Neopleistocene-Holocene (<30 ka). Newly obtained lines of evidence indicate that certain volcanoes erupted in the latest Neopleistocene-Holocene. The first phase of volcanic activity was connected mainly with lava volcanoes, and eruptions during the later phases of volcanic activity in this part of the Greater Caucasus produced mainly lavas. The most significant eruptions are demonstrated to occur in the territory during the second phase. The major evolutionary trends of volcanic processes during the final phase in the Keli Highland are determined. It was also determined that overwhelming majority of volcanoes that were active less than 30 ka BP are spatially restricted to long-liven local magmatic zones, which were active during either all three or only the final two phases of activity. These parts of the territory are, perhaps, the most hazardous in terms of volcanic activity.

Modal compositions of volcaniclastic sands recovered on Leg 126 of the Ocean Drilling Project (Izu-Bonin island arc and Sumisu Rift) are similar to those from other intraoceanic island arcs and associated marginal basins. These sands are dominantly composed of volcanic-lithic and plagioclase-feldspar grains derived from the Izu-Bonin magmatic arc and intrarift volcanoes. The glass color of volcanic fragments ranges from black (tachylite) to brown to colorless; individual samples usually contain a mixture of glass colors. Two of the forearc sites (792 and 793) are more heterogeneous with respect to glass color than the backarc/Sumisu Rift sites (788, 790, and 791). Site 787 forearc sands are dominantly composed of tachylite grains; their unique composition may be attributed either to winnowing by submarine-canyon currents or to a volcanic island source. There is an increase in the proportions of pumice/colorless glass, felsitic grains, and quartz within sediments of the incipient backarc basin (Sumisu Rift), as compared with the forearc-basin sites.

Infilled fissures are described from the interface between two loess deposits on Banks Peninsula, South Island, New Zealand. Both loesses differ from the other loesses by having a solifluction deposit at their base consisting of angular basalt fragments of the same angularity as fresh frost shattered basalt mixed with the loess. Typically, the fissures are narrow and up to 160 cm deep while the infilling of the overlying loess shows no obvious structure. They occur mainly at higher elevations on south (poleward) facing slopes, and the host loess forms a fragipan of high density. They are most readily explained as being seasonal frost fissures or more probably ice-wedge casts, which would have required either permafrost or deep seasonal frost for their formation. If permafrost had existed, this would imply a cooling of the mean annual temperatures by at least 16 to 18°C.

Cryosols are permafrost-affected soils whose genesis is dominated by cryogenic processes, resulting in unique macromorphologies, micromorphologies, thermal characteristics, and physical and chemical properties. In addition, these soils are carbon sinks, storing high amounts of organic carbon collected for thousands of years. In the Canadian soil classification, the Cryosolic Order includes mineral and organic soils that have both cryogenic properties and permafrost within 1 or 2 m of the soil surface. This soil order is divided into Turbic, Static and Organic great groups on the basis of the soil materials (mineral or organic), cryogenic properties and depth to permafrost. The great groups are subdivided into subgroups on the basis of soil development and the resulting diagnostic soil horizons. Cryosols are commonly associated with the presence of ground ice in the subsoil. This causes serious problems when areas containing these soils are used for agriculture and construction projects (such as roads, town sites and airstrips). Therefore, where Cryosols have high ice content, it is especially important either to avoid these activities or to use farming and construction methods that maintain the negative thermal balance.

This study presents soil temperature and moisture regimes from March 2008 to January 2009 for two active layer monitoring (CALM-S) sites at King George Island, Maritime Antarctica. The monitoring sites were installed during the summer of 2008 and consist of thermistors (accuracy of ±0.2 °C), arranged vertically with probes at different depths and one soil moisture probe placed at the bottommost layer at each site (accuracy of ± 2.5%), recording data at hourly intervals in a high capacity datalogger. The active layer thermal regime in the studied period for both soils was typical of periglacial environments, with extreme variation in surface temperature during summer resulting in frequent freeze and thaw cycles. The great majority of the soil temperature readings during the eleven month period was close to 0 °C, resulting in low values of freezing and thawing degree days. Both soils have poor thermal apparent diffusivity but values were higher for the soil from Fildes Peninsula. The different moisture regimes for the studied soils were attributed to soil texture, with the coarser soil presenting much lower water content during all seasons. Differences in water and ice contents may explain the contrasting patterns of freezing of the studied soils, being two-sided for the coarser soil and one-sided for the loamy soil. The temperature profile of the studied soils during the eleven month period indicates that the active layer reached a maximum depth of approximately 92 cm at Potter and 89 cm at Fildes. Longer data sets are needed for more conclusive analysis on active layer behaviour in this part of Antarctica.

Detailed mineralogical investigations of high-Fe layer silicates from loose sediments (glauconite sands) of the Sado Ridge revealed that green aggregates found on submarine rises of the Japan Sea floor have different genesis. It was demonstrated that round dark green grains approximate micas in composition. Primary volcanic rocks presumably have undergone extensive secondary alterations and then were disintegrated. Their disintegration products (protoceladonite) filling pores were redeposited and buried in sediments for a long time. Angular green grains mainly represented by smectite also formed at lower temperatures during disintegration of altered volcanosedimentary rocks. These younger grains had no prolonged exposure. Pseudomorphs of siliceous microplankton consist of both hydromica and smectites. They are presumably authigenic products formed with participation of microorganisms or electrostatic processes (spherical shape), or their combination. The formation mechanism of minerals filling cavities in pyroclastics is not entirely clear.

At Site 1117, drilled during Leg 180 of the Ocean Drilling Program in the Woodlark Basin, we cored a fault zone and recovered fault gouge, mylonitized and brecciated gabbros, and undeformed gabbro. We measured the anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility for the rock samples. The susceptibilities of the fault gouge samples were lower than those of the undeformed gabbro, and those of deformed gabbros were lowest. The anisotropy degrees of the fault gouge samples were higher than those of the deformed and undeformed gabbros. Oblate magnetic fabrics were dominant in the samples from the fault zone.

This study reports the first crystal chemical database resulting from a detailed structural investigation of trioctahedral micas found in xenolithic ejecta produced during the AD 1631, 1872 and 1944 eruptions, three explosive episodes of recent volcanic period of Vesuvius volcano (Southern Italy). Three xenolith types were selected: metamorphic/metasomatic skarns, pyrometamorphic/hydrothermally altered nodules and mafic cumulates. They are related to different magma chemistry and effusive styles: from sub-plinian and most evolved (AD 1631 eruption) to violent strombolian with medium evolution degree (AD 1872 eruption) to vulcanian-effusive, least evolved (AD 1944 eruption) event, respectively. Both xenoliths and micas were investigated employing multiple techniques: the xenoliths were characterized by X-ray fluorescence, inductively-coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, optical microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, and quantitative energy-dispersive microanalysis; the micas were studied by electron probe microanalysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The mica-bearing xenoliths show variable texture and mineralogical assemblage, clearly related to their different origin. Based on the major oxide chemistry, only one xenolithic sample falls in the skarn compositional field from the Somma-Vesuvius literature, some fall close to the skarns and cumulate fields, others plot close to the syenite/foidolite/essexite field. A subgroup of the selected ejecta does not fall or approach any of the compositional fields. Trace and rare earth element patterns show some petrological affinity between studied xenoliths and erupted magmas with typical Eu, Ta and Nb negative anomalies. Strongly depleted patterns were detected for the 1631 metamorphic/metasomatic skarns xenoliths. Three distinct mica groups were distinguished: 1) Mg-, Al-rich, low Ti-bearing, low to moderate F-bearing varieties (1631 xenolith), 2) Al-moderate, F- and Mg-rich, Ti-, Fe-poor varieties (1872 xenolith), and 3) Al-, Ti- and Fe-rich, F-poor phases (1944 xenolith). All the analysed mica crystals are 1M polytypes with the expected space group C2/m. Micas from xenoliths of the 1631 Vesuvius eruption are phlogopites characterized by a combination of low extent of oxy-type and variable extent OH-F-substitutions, as testified by the range of F concentration (from ~ 0.20 to 0.80 apfu). Micas from xenoliths of the 1872 Vesuvius eruption exhibit structural peculiarities typical of fluorophlogopites, i.e. OH-F-substitution is predominant. Micas from the xenolith of the 1944 Vesuvius eruption display features typical of oxy-substituted micas. The variability of the crystal chemical features of the studied micas are consistent with the remarkable variation of their host rocks. Micas from 1631 nodules are related to metasomatic, skarn-type environment, deriving from the metamorphosed wall-rocks hosting the magma reservoir. The fluorophlogopites from the 1872 xenoliths testify for strongly dehydrated environmental conditions compared to those of the 1631 and 1944 hosts. Finally, magma storage condition at depth, associated to a decreasing aH2O may have promoted major oxy-type substitutions in 1944 biotites.

A long-standing question in Paleogene climate concerns the frequency and mechanism of transient greenhouse gas-driven climate shifts (hyperthermals). The discovery of the greenhouse gas-driven Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM; ~55 Ma) has spawned a search for analogous events in other parts of the Paleogene record. On the basis of high-resolution bulk sediment and foraminiferal stable isotope analyses performed on three lower Danian sections of the Atlantic Ocean, we report the discovery of a possible greenhouse gas-driven climatic event in the earliest Paleogene. This event - that we term the Dan-C2 event - is characterized by a conspicuous double negative excursion in delta13C and delta18O, associated with a double spike in increased clay content and decreased carbonate content. This suggests a double period of transient greenhouse gas-driven warming and dissolution of carbonates on the seafloor analogous to the PETMin the early Paleocene at ~65.2 Ma. However, the shape of the two negative carbon isotope excursions that make up the Dan-C2 event is different from the PETM carbon isotope profile. In the Dan-C2 event, these excursions are fairly symmetrical and each persisted for about ~40 ky and are separated by a short plateau that brings the combined duration to ~100 ky, suggesting a possible orbital control on the event. Because of the absence of a long recovery phase, we interpret the Dan-C2 event to have been associated with a redistribution of carbon that was already in the biosphere. The Dan-C2 event and other early Paleogene hyperthermals such as the short-lived early Eocene ELMO eventmay reflect amplification of a regular cycle in the size and productivity of the marine biosphere and the balance between burial of organic and carbonate carbon.
