Sediments from the Cretaceous/Tertiary (K/T) boundary at Deep Sea Drilling Project Site 596 record accumulation of pelagic clays at about lat 45°S,in the center of the ancestral South Pacific. The K/T boundary in this region is characterized by oxidized, thoroughly bioturbated sediments containing large amounts of Ir and relict high-pressure and high-temperature mineral phases. The net Ir fluence (320 ng/cm**2) is among the largest on Earth, and the number of shocked quartz grains >30 µm in size (~1800/cm**2) exceeds that in all localities outside of North America.

The atmospheric chemistry of iodine and bromine in polar regions is of interest due to the key role of halogens in many atmospheric processes, particularly tropospheric ozone destruction. Bromine is emitted from the open ocean but is enriched above first-year sea ice during springtime bromine explosion events, whereas iodine is emitted from biological communities hosted by sea ice. It has been previously demonstrated that bromine and iodine are present in Antarctic ice over glacial-interglacial cycles. Here we investigate seasonal variability of bromine and iodine in polar snow and ice, to evaluate their emission, transport and deposition in Antarctica and the Arctic and better understand potential links to sea ice. We find that bromine enrichment (relative to sea salt content) and iodine concentrations in polar ice do vary seasonally in Arctic snow and Antarctic ice and we relate such variability to satellite-based observations of tropospheric halogen concentrations. Peaks of bromine enrichment in Arctic snow and Antarctic ice occur in spring and summer, when sunlight is present. Iodine concentrations are largest in winter Antarctic ice strata, contrary to contemporary observations of summer maxima in iodine emissions.

The entire suite of halogens was measured in the pore fluids of Hole 1033B and 1034B from Saanich Inlet: ODP Leg 169S. The fast sedimentation rates and large amount of organic carbon burial coupled with anoxia of the overlying waters promotes an advanced stage of diagenesis within the sediment column. Chloride interstitial water profiles suggest salinity variations within the waters of Saanich Inlet. Concentration profiles for iodide and bromide support the argument that they are produced through the degradation of organic matter. Although the concentration increases in I- and Br- indicate that these halides are not regenerated in similar proportions to marine organic matter, it appears that iodide and bromide are regenerated to similar degrees within the sediment column and in similar proportions to the sediment halide concentrations. Fluoride porewater values show a complicated pattern, most likely caused by secondary reactions involving complexation with Mg2+, carbonate fluorapatite precipitation, carbonate mineral diagenesis, and/or uptake into alumino-silicate minerals.

The shapes and surface textures of sand-sized quartz grains from the sediments cored at Site 645 in southern Baffin Bay during ODP Leg 105 were studied to characterize the terrigenous materials and the settling processes involved in the deposition of these sediments. Here, we show a homogeneous sand fraction that results from mixing grains from various provenances. The characteristics inherited from terrestrial processes (varying degrees of wear; fluviatile, aeolian, and diagenetic features) dominate the characteristics that result from evolution in a high-energy marine environment. Thus, the influence of the last stage of sedimentation in a deep-marine environment was difficult to distinguish. However, fluctuations in the relative proportions of particular features reveal that the terrigenous material derived from sedimentary formations of Baffin Island and East Greenland or from direct abrasion of the crystalline shield, which changed through time as the dominant settling processes evolved. In particular, this study confirms the onset of major ice rafting as old as late Miocene.

The interval between 488.2 and 513.7 m below seafloor at Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Site 615 is interpreted as a single carbonate gravity-flow deposit. The deposit has characteristics of both a debris flow and a high-density turbidity current. Comparison of the sedimentary constituents in 15 samples from this site with samples from 26 core tops from the upper West Florida continental slope and eastern Mississippi Fan shows many similarities. Shallow-water indicators, such as mollusk and echinoid fragments, occur in both suites of samples. The West Florida continental margin, therefore, is a potential provenance area. The Yucatan slope is also a possible source, but data from it are limited. The recognition of carbonate gravity-flow deposits intercalated within the Mississippi Fan refines our understanding of Pleistocene sedimentation within the Gulf basin. Deposition in the deep Gulf is dominated by the construction of the Mississippi Fan. However, this marine terrigenous depocenter is located between two large carbonate depocenters, the West Florida continental margin on the east and the Yucatan peninsula on the southwest. Periodically, the carbonate slope in these two regions fails, injecting carbonate gravity flows into the accreting terrigenous deep-sea fan.
