A detailed study of chemical composition of bottom sediments along a profile through the Northwest Pacific Basin has allowed to identify and describe four lithofacies types of bottom sediments. Distinguished types of sediments form a genetic series reflecting changing conditions of sedimentation from near-shore to central regions of the ocean. Along the strike of pelagic clays a gradual transition from ash containing clays to zeolite containing clays is established. Ash particles and zeolites have similar forms of occurrence. Together with other data it suggests that zeolites have been formed by diagenetic transformation of rhyolitic glass. Regular changes of CaCO3, amorphous SiO2, Fe and Mn contents in bottom sediments from the coast to the pelagic zone are shown.

We drilled three sites (Sites 1071, 1072, and 1073) on the New Jersey shelf and slope at water depths between 88 and 664 m. Grain-size analyses from shelf sites (Sites 1071 and 1072) define five types of sediment: well-sorted fine sand, silty sand or sandy silt, clayey silt, poorly sorted sandy mud, and poorly sorted lag sediments. At slope Site 1073, a grain-size minimum of 3-6 µm is found at 300 meters below seafloor. These sediments are well sorted and lack sand- and clay-sized grains. Horizons of coarse-grained sediments are present in Unit I at Site 1073.

This data set contains grain size analyses of bottom sediments collected by scientists from the V.P. Zenkovich Laboratory of Shelf and Sea Coasts (P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, Russian Academy of Sciences) during the Project ''Arctic Shelf of the Eurasia in the Late Quaternary'' in a number of expeditions to the Barents, Kara, East Siberian and Chukchi Seas on board the research vessels R/V Professor Shtokman, H/V Dmitry Laptev, H/V Malygin, and icebreaker Georgy Sedov since 1978. The analyses have been carried out according to the methods published by Petelin (1967) in the Analytical Laboratory of the P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology. Archiving and electronic publication was performed through a data rescue by Evgeny Gurvich in 2003.
