The relationship between the distribution of benthic foraminifera and sediment type and depositional environment in the Arabian Sea is discussed. The benthic foraminiferal fauna were sampled in nineteen Recent surface sediment samples, and geochemical variables of the sediment of the same samples were measured. The water depths for the box core samples varies from 440 to 4040 m. A total of 103 species and six species-complexes were identified. The geochemical properties were found to correspond well to the sediment type and depositional environment and six different sediment/depositional environment types could be distinguished. Analysis of the benthic foraminiferal fauna reveals specific faunal assemblages that are closely related to these sediment/depositional environment types.

The monogragh contains results of mineralogicai and geochemical studies of Mesozoic and Cenozoic deposits from the Pacific Ocean collected during Deep Sea Drilling Project. Special attention is paid on the aspects of geochemical history of post-Jurassic sedimentation in the central part of the Northwest Pacific, detailed characteristics of the main stages of sedimentary evolution are given: Early Cretaceons (protooceanic), Late Cretaceons (transitional) and Cenozoic (oceanic). Results of mineralogical and geochemical studies of hydrothermal deposits from the Galapagos Rift are given as well.

According to results of Cruise 22 of R/V Akademik Mstislav Keldysh in the Northwest Pacific in July-August 1990, picophytoplankton represented mainly by cyanobacteria (up to 90%) comprised from 70 to 99% of total phytoplankton. Nanophytoplankton constituted substantial part of total biomass (22-37%) and consisted mainly of small phytoflagellates (2-4 ?m), cryptomonades, and coccolithophorids Emiliania huxleyi. Summer species such as Neodenticula seminae prevailed among large phytoplankton. Horizontal and vertical distribution of phytoplankton groups and species was described. Taxonomy and vertical distribution were related to nutrient concentrations in the upper mixed layer.
