A study of samples dredged within areas of tectonic arc-trench systems (Kermadec and New Hebrides) allows to distinguish three types of ferromanganese mineralization. Relationship between mineral and geochemical specialization is established. A conclusion is made that ferromanganese mineralization is a permanent genetic series of matter supply: from endogenic (hydrothermal solution is a dominant source at deposition of chemical elements from mixture seawater plus hydrothermal solutions) to hydrogenic (seawater is a dominant source at element deposition). This results in geochemical and mineralogical variety of ferromanganese mineralization within this part of the Pacific Ocean.

Typomorphic features of the main morphogenetic types of Fe-Mn nodules from the radiolarian belt have been considered on materials from polygons in the Clarion-Clipperton ore province and in the Central Basin of the Pacific Ocean. By character of surfaces, features of internal structure, mineral and chemical compositions, behavior of trace elements at selective leaching three genetic types of nodules have been divided: predominantly sedimentary, diagenetic, and sedimentary diagenetic. Their formation results from mechanism of growth.

The Duolong porphyry Cu-Au deposit (5.4 Mt at 0.72% Cu, 41 t at 0.23 g/t Au), which is related to the granodiorite porphyry and the quartz-diorite porphyry from the Bangongco copper belt in central Tibet, formed in a continental arc setting. Here, we present the zircon U-Pb ages, geochemical whole-rock, Sr-Nd whole-rock and zircon in-situ Hf-O isotopic data for the Duolong porphyries. Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) zircon U-Pb analyses for six samples yielded consistent ages of ~118 Ma, indicating a Cretaceous formation age. The Duolong porphyries (SiO2 of 58.81-68.81 wt.%, K2O of 2.90-5.17 wt.%) belong to the high-K calc-alkaline series. They show light rare earth element (LREE)-enriched distribution patterns with (La/Yb)N = 6.1-11.7, enrichment in large ion lithophile elements (e.g., Cs, Rb, and Ba) and depletion of high field strength elements (e.g., Nb), with negative Ti anomalies. All zircons from the Duolong porphyries share relatively similar Hf-O isotopic compositions (d18O=5.88-7.27 per mil; eHf(t)=3.6-7.3), indicating that they crystallized from a series of cogenetic melts with various degrees of fractional crystallization. This, along with the general absence of older inherited zircons, rules out significant crustal contamination during zircon growth. The zircons are mostly enriched in d18O relative to mantle values, indicating the involvement of an 18O-enriched crustal source in the generation of the Duolong porphyries. Together with the presence of syn-mineralization basaltic andesite, the mixing between silicic melts derived from the lower crust and evolved H2O-rich mafic melts derived from the metsomatizied mantle wedge, followed by subsequent fractional crystallization (FC) and minor crustal contamination in the shallow crust, could well explain the petrogenesis of the Duolong porphyries. Significantly, the hybrid melts possibly inherited the arc magma characteristics of abundant F, Cl, Cu, and Au elements and high oxidation state, which contributed to the formation of the Duolong porphyry Cu-Au deposit.

The monograph includes the study of chemical and mineral compositions of terrestrial and marine manganese ores, methods of their analysis, dependence of manganese crust geochemistry on tectonic position of their formation, problems of manganese genesis and sources of manganese in ocean ores in connection with geohistorical aspects of ocean formation and development. A hypothesis is offered that formation of giant manganese mineral basins on continental margins resulted from a large asteroid fall to the ocean.

Results of direct geological and geochemical observations of the modern Rainbow hydrothermal field (Mid-Atlantic Ridge, 36°14'N; 33°54'W) carried out from the deep-sea manned Mir submersibles during Cruises 41 and 42 of the R/V Akademik Mstislav Keldysh in 1998-1999 and data of laboratory studies of collected samples are under consideration in the paper. The field lacks neovolcanic rocks and the axial part of the rift is filled in with a serpentinite protrusion. In this field there occur metalliferous sediments, as well as active and relict sulfide edifices composed of sulfide minerals; pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, isocubanite, sphalerite, marcasite, pyrite, bornite, chalcosine, digenite, magnetite, anhydrite, rare troilite, wurtzite, millerite, and pentlandite have been determined. Sulfide ores are characterized by concentric-zoned textures. During in situ measurements during 35 minutes temperature of hydrothermal fluids was varying within a range from 250 to 350°C. Calculated chemical and isotopic composition of hydrothermal fluid shows elevated concentrations of Cl, Ni, Co, CH4, and H2. Values of d34S of H2S range from +2.4 to +3.1 per mil, of d13C of CH4 from -15.2 to -11.2 per mil, and d13C of CO2 from +1.0 to -4.0 per mil. Fluid inclusions are homogenized at temperatures from 140 to 360°C, whereas salinity of the fluid varies from 4.2 to 8.5 wt %. d34S values of sulfides range from +1.3 to +12.5 per mil. 3He/4He ratio in mineral-forming fluid contained in the fluid inclusions from sulfides of the Rainbow field varies from 0.00000374 to 0.0000101. It is shown that hydrothermal activity in the area continues approximately during 100 ka. It is assumed that the fluid and sulfide edifices contain components from the upper mantle. A hypothesis of phase separation of a supercritical fluid that results in formation of brines is proposed. Hydrothermal activity is related to the tectonic, not volcanic, phase of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge evolution.

The monograph summarizes results of studies of hydrothermal fields on the ocean floor, hydrothermal plumes and metalliferous sediments. Hydrothermal ore manifestations formed in different geodynamic settings, with different character of volcanism in different facial conditions of deposition are described. Causes of non-uniformity of hydrothermal system functioning in different parts of the ocean and therefore variability of hydrothermal deposits are under consideration. On the base of found relationships of these irregularities with geodynamics, volcanism and sedimentation a new classification of hydrothermal processes and genetic models of hydrothermal ore formation in the ocean have been created. Regularities of hydrothermal sedimentary material dispersion in bottom waters are discussed.

Chemical and isotopic data for rare massive and semimassive sulfide samples cored at Site 1189 (Roman Ruins, PACMANUS) suggest their genetic relationship with sulfide chimneys at the seafloor. Sand collected from the hammer drill after commencement of Hole 1189B indicates that at least the lower section of the cased interval was occupied by material similar to the stockwork zone cored from 31 to ~100 meters below seafloor (mbsf) in this hole, but with increased content of barite, sphalerite, and lead-bearing minerals. Fractional crystallization of ascending hydrothermal fluid involving early precipitation of pyrite may explain vertical mineralogical and chemical zoning within the stockwork conduit and the high base and precious metal contents of Roman Ruins chimneys. A mineralized volcaniclastic unit cored deep in Hole 1189A possibly represents the lateral fringe of the conduit system. Lead isotope ratios in the sulfides differ slightly but significantly from those of fresh lavas from Pual Ridge, implying that at least some of the Pb within the Roman Ruins hydrothermal system derived from a deeper, more radiogenic source than the enclosing altered volcanic rocks.

Distributions of Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Ni, Co, Cr, Pb, As, Ag, Cd, Se, Sb, and Hg in 128 samples of tissues of organisms that inhabit hydrothermal vent fields of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (Menez Gwen, Snake Pit, and Rainbow) depending on the abiotic environmental parameters were studied. The majority of the elements studied showed direct correlations between their concentrations in fluids released and in tissues of hydrothermal organisms. A higher degree of bioaccumulation of metals was revealed in Bathymodiolus mussels and Rimicaris shrimps from the Rainbow hydrothermal vent field as compared to their analogues from the Menez Gwen and Snake Pit fields. This corresponds to maximal concentrations of the majority of the metals studied in the Rainbow high-temperature hydrothermal fluids. The highest degree of bioaccumulation of heavy metals was found in gills of symbiotrophic mussels Bathymodiolus and in maxillipeds of ectosymbiotic shrimps Rimicaris, i.e., in organs that function in dependence on chemosynthetic bacteria. Within the Rainbow vent field, the shrimps, which inhabit in biotopes with more high-temperature conditions and therefore are more strongly subjected to influence of fluids, were found to contain higher metal contents than mollusks. Fe-Mn hydroxide films that cover mussel shells might serve as important reservoirs of other metals related to Fe and Mn.

A large fragment of a paleovolcano of Silurian to Early Devonian age was discovered in the Voikar volcanic belt suggesting an ensimatic island are as its geodynamic environment. Formationally, the rocks under study are comparable to Pleistocene island arc volcanites and their paleo-analogues. The volcanites of the Toupugol complex underwent strong hydrothermal-metasomatic alteration: propylites, acid metasomatic rocks and quartz-carbonate veins, which must have resulted from hydrothermal-metasomatic alteration of andesitoids. Both volcanites and apovolcanic hydrothermal rocks in Toupugol were found to host noble metal mineralisation. It is found in close association with sulphides, particularly pyrite. Free gold was discovered in all investigated volcanites and hydrothermal rocks and is characterised by low mercury content and an unusual set of microimpurities (Pt, Pd, Cu, Fe, S) suggesting its links to the mantle substrate.

The first series of Soviet standard reference samples of composition of ore materials and ocean pelagic sediments has been created. It includes iron-manganese nodules (SDO-4, SDO-5 and SDO-6), ore crusts (SDO-7) diatomaceous ooze (SDO-8), and deep-sea red clays (SDO-9). The standards are intended to serve as a metrologic basis for physical, physicochemical and chemical analyses of iron-manganese minerals and ocean sediments. The standards are provided with certified analyses of rock-forming components and certain trace elements. Certified characteristics are based on statistical analysis of data obtained from an inter-laboratory experiment involving analysis of the standard reference samples by a variety of methods.

In the Tyrrhenian Sea (Western Mediterranean), unusual reddish, soft to lithified, dolomitic sediments up to 45 m thick overlie igneous crust at the base of thick Pliocene-Quaternary deep-sea sediment successions in the Marsili (Site 650) and Vavilov (Site 651) basins. These sediments also overlie the Gortani Ridge, a basaltic Seamount near the base of the Sardinian continental margin (Site 655). At both basinal sites (650, 651), the lowest sediments are dolomitic, with manganese oxide (MnO) segregations. Whole-rock X-ray diffraction indicates abundant dolomite and quartz, with subordinate calcite, illite (authigenic), feldspar and minor kaolinite, chlorite, and anhydrite. Chemical analyses show strong enrichment in magnesium oxide (MgO) and MnO relative to shale or deep-sea clay. Mg and Mn correlate positively and exhibit decreasing concentrations up the succession in the Marsili Basin (Site 650). The following scenario is proposed: peridotites were exposed on the seafloor in the Vavilov Basin (Site 651) and then eroded, depositing talc in local fine-grained dolomitic sediments within the igneous basement. After local magmatism ended, the igneous basement at each site subsided rapidly (about 800 m/m.y.) and was blanketed with calcareous and clay-rich oozes. During early diagenesis (from isotopic evidence; McKenzie et al., this volume) tepid fluids, of modified seawater composition, reacted with and dolomitized the overlying deep-sea sediments. At Site 651 additional Mg may have been extracted from asthenosphere peridotite cored at shallow depths (about 100 m). One can hypothesize that fluids rich in Mg and Mn were flushed from the igneous basement, triggered by extensional faulting and local tilting during subsidence of the basement, and that these fluids then dolomitized the base of the overlying sediment succession. Late tectonic movements in the Vavilov Basin (Site 651) fractured already lithified dolomitic sediments and more reducing (? hydrothermal) fluids locally remobilized Fe and Mn and corroded dolomite crystals.

Data on internal structure, distribution, and chemical composition of iron-manganese nodules from the central part of the South Pacific are reported. Nodules with relatively high contents of Fe, Ti, Co, and Pb were found. Formation of these nodules in pelagic regions of the ocean with low sedimentation rates is tentatively ascribed by the authors to leaching of Fe, Mn, and some minor elements during submarine lava outflow and to geochemical mobility of these elements. The role of diagenetic re-distribution of ore elements during formation of nodules is also discussed.

The book is devoted to study of diagenetic changes of organic matter and mineral part of sediments and interstitial waters of the Pacific Ocean due to physical-chemical and microbiological processes. Microbiological studies deal with different groups of bacteria. Regularities of quantitative distribution and the role of microorganisms in geochemical processes are under consideration. Geochemical studies highlight redox processes of the early stages of sediment diagenesis, alterations of interstitial waters, regularities of variations in chemical composition of iron-manganese nodules.
