New data on microstructures and mineral and chemical compositions of ferromanganese crusts sampled from the western slope of the Kuril Island Arc in the Sea of Okhotsk during cruises of R/V Vulkanolog are discussed. The study of the crusts using analytical electron microscopy methods revealed that their manganese phase is represented by vernadite, Fe-vernadite, todorokite, asbolane, and asbolane-buserite, while iron phase consists of hematite, hydrohematite, ferroxyhite, and magnetite. Lithic mineral assemblage includes apatite, quartz, epidote, and montmorillonite. According to chemical analysis most of the crusts contain significant part of volcanogenic and hydrothermal material. It is evident from elevated values of Mn/Fe and (Mn+Fe)/Ti ratios, low concentrations of some trace elements, and positive Eu anomaly.

This paper reports results of an investigation of a representative collection of samples recovered by deep-sea drilling from the oceanic basement 10 miles west of the rift valley axis in the crest zone of the Mid- Atlantic Ridge at 15°44'N (Sites 1275B and 1275D). Drilling operations were carried out during Leg 209 of the Drilling Vessel JOIDES Resolution within the framework of the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP). The oceanic crust was penetrated to depth of 108.7 m at Site 1275B and 209 m at Site 1275D. We reconstructed the following sequence of magmatic and metamorphic events resulting in the formation of a typical oceanic core complex of slow-spreading ridges: (1) formation of strongly fractionated (enriched in iron and titanium) tholeiitic magmatic melt parental to gabbroids under investigation in a large magma chamber located in a shallow mantle and operating for a long time under steady-state conditions; (2) transfer of the parental magmatic melt of the gabbroids to the base of the oceanic crust, its interaction with host mantle peridotites, and formation of troctolites and plagioclase peridotites; (3) intrusion of enriched trondhjemite melts as veins and dikes in the early formed plutonic complex, contact recrystallization of the gabbro, and development in the peridotite-gabbro complex of enriched geochemical signatures owing to influence of trondhjemite injections; (4) emplacement of dolerite dikes (transformed to diabases); (5) metamorphism of upper epidoteamphibolite facies with participation of marine fluids; and (6) rapid exhumation of the plutonic complex to the seafloor accompanied by greenschist-facies metamorphism. Distribution patterns of Sr and Nd isotopes and strongly incompatible elements in the rocks suggest contributions from two melt sources to the magmatic evolution of the MAR crest at 15°44'N: a depleted reservoir responsible for formation of the gabbros and diabases and an enriched reservoir, from which trondhjemites (granophyres) were derived.

The Galicia margin lies northwest of the Iberian Peninsula and is a passive ocean margin with thin sedimentary cover. Altered peridotite was recovered from ODP Site 637, on the north-trending ridge at the western edge of the margin, near the oceanic/continental crust boundary. The altered ultramafics were originally clinopyroxene-rich upper mantle harzburgites and are now extensively serpentinized (>85%) and cut by very late-stage carbonate veins. Despite pervasive late, low-temperature alteration, evidence of early, high-temperature alteration remains. Alteration is apparent as (1) amphibole rims on clinopyroxene (>800°C), (2) hornblende + tremolite (450° to 800°C), (3) breakdown of hornblende to form tremolite + chlorite (<450°C), (4) zoned Cr-spinels, (5) hydration of orthopyroxene and olivine to serpentine, (6) serpentine veins, (7) replacement of pyroxene and olivine by calcite, and (8) calcite veins and vugs. Both the relict igneous and the high-temperature alteration minerals (amphiboles) show evidence of brittle deformation. Subsequent low-temperature alteration veins and minerals are deformed only in faulted and brecciated zones. This textural evidence suggests that the low-temperature alteration occurred after emplacement of the ultramafics at the surface. Serpentine fills tension fractures in orthopyroxene, and both serpentine and calcite fill tension cracks in olivine. The high-temperature alterations in these samples are similar to those found in oceanic fracture zone and ophiolite ultramafics. This widespread occurrence of high-temperature alteration suggests that hot fluids were pervasive in these ultramafic blocks. Localization of high-temperature alteration close to large carbonate veins suggests channelization of the late, low-temperature fluids. Earlier hydrations (e.g., high-temperature alterations and serpentinization) were pervasive.

During underwater photography and sampling of the rift valley bottom in the axial part of the East Pacific Rise, where water transparency is reduced due to hydrothermal input, ore manifestations have been found. The bottom is covered by them as by a jacket on both sides from the EPR axial zone. However, exposed pillow-lavas and clumpy blocks in rift ledges are covered by a thin metal-bearing film. It is supposed that sedimentation results mainly from hydrothermal input of dissolved chemical elements in seawater, their transformation on the geochemical barrier, and subsequent deposition as particulates. Contents of ore components in metalliferous sediments have been measured by atomic-absorption and X-ray radiometry methods. Sediment age has been determined as Middle Pleistocene - Holocene. Maximal hydrothermal activity was at the beginning of Early Holocene, about 10 Ka. A smoker has been found on the western slope of the rift valley.

This study investigates the d18O of pore waters from Sites 1003 through 1007, drilled along the western margin of the Great Bahama Bank during Leg 166 of the Ocean Drilling Program. These pore waters generally show a positive correlation between d18O and the concentration of chloride. The exception to this trend is Site 1006, where the pore waters exhibit nonlinear behavior with respect to chloride. The correlation between the concentration of Cl- and d18O at most of the sites appears to be a coincidence because although the increase in Cl- is a result of diffusion from an underlying source, the increases in d18O result from the recrystallization of metastable carbonates in the presence of a geothermal gradient. The difference in behavior in the d18O of the pore water at Site 1006 is probably a result of the relative reduced rate of carbonate recrystallization at this site. The d18O of the pore waters in the upper portion of the cores shows a pattern similar to the concentration of chloride in that there is an interval of 30-50 m in which neither the d18O nor the concentration of Cl- changes. This interval is consistent with either an interval of very rapid deposition of sediment or the advection of fluid through the platform. Both the d18O and the concentration of Cl- increase toward the platform, suggesting an input of saline and isotopically heavy water from the platform surface.

Data on chlorophyll a concentration and species composition and biomass of phytoplankton have been collected for two years continues monitoring in the central part and the slope zone of the Black Sea. Seasonal dynamics of chlorophyll a concentration correspond to U-type. It is characterized by low values in summer, high values in autumn, which are going to winter-spring bloom of phytoplankton. Oscillations of mean values of chlorophyll concentrations are equal to 3-4 in the central part and 2 - in the slope zone. In the autumn-winter-spring period high values of phytoplankton biomass are related to typical blooming diatom algae in the first year and other taxons - in the second year. Relationship between relative content of phaeopigment and chlorophyll concentration has been determined for the central western part of the sea. Seasonal dynamics of carbon/chlorophyll a ratio has been shown. For both regions mean values of this ratio were equal to ~20 in autumn-winter-spring time and 40-50 - in summer time.

Pliocene and Pleistocene volcanic glass fragments from Mariana Trough sediments at Sites 453 (16 samples) and 454 (4 samples), located near the western edge of the trough and just west of the spreading axis, respectively, have been analyzed for major elements with an electron microprobe. They derive from volcanic activity on the present Mariana active arc. The glasses from Site 453 are all tholeiitic with a wide range of SiO2 contents. Those less than 2 m.y. old have slightly lower TiO2 and higher K2O contents than the older ones. The glasses from Site 454 are all Pleistocene and resemble the younger glasses at Site 453. Major element compositions of the older basaltic glasses at Site 453 are similar to those of the Mariana Trough basalts drilled on Leg 60. Both older and younger suites of glasses differ from the composition of rocks exposed on the active arc, which are assumed to be younger than any of the samples studied (i.e., about 200,000 y.). A third suite is represented by the arc rocks exposed on the volcanic islands. These have a smaller range of SiO2 contents and contain more A12O3 but less K2O, TiO2, and FeO1 (total Fe as FeO) than the sediment glasses studied. Further, a plot of FeO1 against MgO for the arc rocks does not follow the island arc tholeiite trend of the trough sediment glasses. Using the major element compositions of the arc rocks and sediment glasses, we can recognize three phases of volcanic activity, as indicated. The first evidence of the oldest phase of activity occurs 5 Ma, about 4.5 m.y. after the trough started to form. The second commenced about 2 Ma, and the last, including present-day activity, began within the last 200,000 y. Initially the rocks had major element affinities with the tholeiitic Mariana Trough seafloor, but this influence declined as the trough widened.

Data on composition of aerosols are considered. Investigations include electron microscopy, grain size, mineralogical and chemical analyses. Samples of aerosols were collected Cruise 37 of R/V Akademik Mstislav Keldysh along a transatlantic section along 40°-50°N. Variability of concentrations and composition of aerosols with distance from continents is shown: concentrations of aerosols decrease by factor of ten and more. Significant portion of mineral components in aerosols collected over the continent is replaced by organic matter due to mechanical differentiation during transportation. Such anthropogenic components as soot, ash, and combustion spheres were detected in all samples. North African dust was found in one sample in the western part of the section.

Taxonomic composition and structure of assemblages of the present-day benthic Foraminifera in the Kara Sea has been studied on the base of 37 samples of surface sediments. Three assemblages have been distinguished by composition of dominant species. The assemblage Cribrostomoides subglobosus-Tritaxis nana with prevalence of agglutinating forms, typical for abyssal areas of the World Ocean, occurs in brown oozes in the deep western part of the sea at depths 70-375 m under conditions of considerable bottom stratification. The assemblage Elphidium clavatum-Cassidulina reniforme consists predominantly of species with calcareous shells and is characterized by a wide range of species; this assemblage occurs in the eastern part of the sea at depths 30-90 m in a well-aerated area. Species typical for sublittoral areas of polar regions are dominant. The assemblage Elphidium clavatum-Haynesina orbiculare occupies the littoral estuarine part of the sea. This assemblage is poor in species and not abundant, and it occurs under influence of freshened water masses undersaturated with dissolved carbonaceous matter.

We describe the molecular composition of a portion of the solvent-soluble organic material (lipid extract), from three organic rich muds (samples 116-717C-22X-1, 80-86 cm, 116-717C-34X-3, 130-135 cm, and 116-717C-55X-1, 65-70 cm). These samples were taken from Hole 717C, located on the Bengal Fan at a position of 0°55.8'S and 81°23.4'E. Both the palaeoenvironmental and digenetic significance of these lipid distributions have been assessed and found to be consistent with their suspected origins, i.e., turbidites from the upper slope of the western Bay of Bengal and the Ganges-Brahmaputra delta.

The measurements were obtained during two North Sea wide STAR-shaped cruises during summer 1986 and winter 1987, which were performed to investigate the circulation induced transport and biologically induced pollutant transfer within the interdisciplinary research in the project "ZISCH - Zirkulation und Schadstoffumsatz in der Nordsee / Circulation and Contaminant Fluxes in the North Sea (1984-1989)". The inventory presents parameters measured on hydrodynamics, nutrient dynamics, ecosystem dynamics and pollutant dynamics in the pelagic and benthic realm. The research program had the objective of quantifying fluxes of major budgets, especially contaminants in the North Sea. In spring 1986, following the phytoplankton spring bloom, and in late winter 1987, at minimum primary production activity, the North Sea ecosystem was investigated on a station net covering the whole North Sea. The station net was shaped like a star. Sampling started in the centre, followed by the northwest section and moving counter clockwise around the North Sea following the residual currents. By this strategy, a time series was measured in the central North Sea and more synoptic data sets were obtained in the individual sections. Generally advection processes have to be considered when comparing the data from different stations. The entire sampling period lasted for more than six weeks in each cruise. Thus, a time-lag should be considered especially when comparing the data from the eastern and the western part of the central and northern North Sea, where samples were taken at the beginning and at the end of the campaign. The ZISCH investigations represented a qualitatively and quantitatively new approach to North Sea research in several respects. (1) The first simultaneous blanket coverage of all important biological, chemical and physical parameters in the entire North Sea ecosystem; (2) the first simultaneous measurements of major contaminants (metals and organohaline compounds) in the different ecosystem compartments; (3) simultaneous determinations of atmospheric inputs of momentum, energy and matter as important ecosystem boundary conditions; (4) performance of the complex measurement program during two seasons, namely the spring plankton bloom and the subsequent winter period of minimal biological activity; and (5) support of data analysis and interpretation by oceanographic and meteorological numerical models on the same scales.
