New K-Ar age determinations of basalt samples from three drill holes and outcrops on the Franz Josef Land suggest that flood volcanism throughout the archipelago fits in a very narrow age interval (116±5 Ma). For 95% of the samples we studied, age scatter is within analytical uncertainty. New data on basaltic bulk-rock, trace element, and REE compositions point to mantle plume affinity for Early Cretaceous magmatism on the Franz Josef Land, which preceded the onset of seafloor spreading in the Canada Basin.

Distribution of K-Ar age marks in Pacific bottom sediments is shown on the base of large analytical material. Dependence of K-Ar age marks on abundance of potassium-bearing authigenic diagenetic minerals (glauconite, phillipsite) widely spread in the studied part of the World Oceans.

Volcanogenic rocks from the Sea of Okhotsk are divided into seven age complexes: Late Jurassic, Early Cretaceous, Late Cretaceous, Eocene, Late Oligocene, Late Miocene, and Pliocene-Pleistocene. All these complexes are united into two groups - Late Mesozoic and Cenozoic. Each group reflects a certain stage of development of the Sea of Okhotsk region. Late Mesozoic volcanites build the geological basement of the Sea of Okhotsk, and their petrochemical features are similar to those of the volcanic rocks from the Okhotsk-Chukotka Volcanogen. Pliocene-Pleistocene volcanites reflect stages of tectono-magmatic activity; the latter destroyed the continental margin and produced riftogenic troughs. Geochemical features of volcanites from the Sea of Okhotsk indicate influence of the sialic crust on magma formation and testify formation of the Okhotsk Sea Basin on the destructive margin of the Asian continent.

In sediments of the Laptev Sea unknown earlier ferromanganese manifestations have been found. On the basis of structural-textural external signs they have been divided to five groups: 1) tube- and spindle-shaped pseudomorphs after and within invertebrates; 2) nuclear and non-nuclear nodules; 3) flagellum- and tube-like skeletons of polychaetes; 4) flat and flattened crustate nodules and crusts; 5) micronodules. All types of ferromanganese manifestations have been sorted in three main genetic series: eigenferrous formations of autochthonous (polychaetes, goethite micronodules) and allochthonous (nuclear nodules) nature; ferromanganese nodules formed under mild hydro-geodynamic conditions at the sediment-seawater geochemical barrier; and ferromanganese manifestations formed under conditions of the variable physico-chemical environment. Ferromanganese manifestations of allochthonous type have signs of littoral zones. They contain both ferrous and ferric iron and have low oxidation degree of manganese in comparison with the autochthonous type manifestations. Manganese minerals with moderate oxidation degree are represented by vernadite and buserite. Such features of iron and manganese indicate different conditions of their formation and occurrence. The main distinctive feature of ferromanganese mineralisation in the Laptev Sea is the redox barrier: the oxidized water layer enriched in oxygen and reduced sediments. This barrier provides favorable conditions for bacterial formation of ferromanganese ores. Understanding of the genesis of ferromanganese manifestations should be found in a study of organic matter reworking by bacteria.

Mineralogical, morphological and isotopic (Rb-Sr and K-Ar) determinations were made on some detrital smectites of Palaeocene and Cenomanian ages from DSDP. drillings in the Atlantic Ocean. These minerals are not inert in their depositional environment; authigenic laths grow on detrital sheets with sharp borders. This authigenesis could occur slightly after deposition in a closed system, for some of these smectites. It has been tentatively quantified by the Rb-Sr and K-Ar isotopic methods, which seem also well suited to evaluate the chemical extent of this authigenesis. At least, no preferential loss of 40Ar vs. 87Sr could be detected in the minerals, even in those which are smaller than 0.2 ?m.

A geochemical investigation was carried out on two sediment cores collected at 2 and 5 km from the Rainbow hydrothermal vent site. Bulk sediment compositions indicate that these cores record clear enrichments in Fe, Cu, Mn, V, P and As from hydrothermal plume fallout (Cave et al., 2002, doi:10.1016/S0016-7037(02)00823-2). Sequential dissolution of the bulk sediments has been used to discriminate between a leach (biogenic and oxy-hydroxide) component and a residual phase (detrital and sulphide/sulphate fractions). Major element data (Al, Fe, Ti, Mn, Mg, Ca, Si and index%) reveal that the hydrothermal input, as recorded in the leach phase, is much stronger than apparent from bulk sediment analyses alone. REE patterns for the leach phase record contributions from both biogenic carbonate (mimicking seawater REE patterns) and hydrothermal oxy-hydroxides, with the latter exhibiting positive Eu anomalies (hydrothermal derived) and negative Ce anomalies (seawater derived). Based on major element and REE data, the residue contains contributions from aeolian dust input, local MORB material and a hydrothermal component. Ternary REE mixing calculations indicate that most of the REE within the residual fraction (~80%) is derived from hydrothermal material, while detrital contributions to the REE budget, as deep-sea clay and volcanic debris, are <20%. By combining bulk and REE data for the various end-member components of the residue, we calculate that the chemical composition of the residue hydrothermal end-member is high in Ca (6-15%) and with a Nd/Sr ratio of 0.004. These characteristics indicate the presence of low-solubility hydrothermal sulphate (rather than sulphide) material within the residue component of Rainbow hydrothermal sediments.

Six samples from Sites 1219 and 1221 ranging in age from early Eocene to early Oligocene were analyzed for freely extractable lipids to determine whether the low organic carbon (Corg) sediments of the Eocene equatorial Pacific (Corg content typically 0.03%) are appropriate for biomarker studies. Only one sample from the Oligocene equatorial Pacific (Sample 199-1219A-13H-3, 50-54 cm) contained any biomarkers of interest to paleoceanography. The only lipids identified in the remaining samples appear to be contaminants from drilling or subsequent handling. Sample 199-1219A-13H-3, 50-54 cm, contained alkenone biomarkers specific to haptophyte algae that are used for estimating past mean annual sea-surface temperature (maSST). If the Holocene calibration of maSST is appropriate for the Oligocene, the estimated equatorial temperature is >=28.3°C, or at least 3°C warmer than modern equatorial maSST at a similar longitude.

Results of study of bottom sediments near Iceland and on the Jan Mayen Island are reported. It was found that in recent sediments chemical elements are mainly associated with pyro- and volcanoclastics. In some areas adjusted to deep-seated faults ancient iron-manganese crusts and sediments occur. They are rich in Ni, Co, V, Cu, Mo, Cd and other elements associated with endogenic matter.
